The "intimate enemies": Edward Dowden, W. B. Yeats and the formation of character
2014
Published version of an article in the journal: Nordic Journal of English Studies. Also available from the publisher at: http://ojs.ub.gu.se/ojs/index.php/njes/article/view/2917 Open Access Stung by Edward Dowden's reluctance to endorse the Irish Literary Revival, W. B. Yeats distanced himself publicly from the TCD Professor. This act of distancing has largely been accepted by subsequent scholarship as a reflection of Dowden's lack of influence on Yeats. Despite obvious disagreements on some key points, this essay will argue that Yeats is close to Dowden on a number of issues, by tracing their intimate dialogue about the writings of George Eliot, Shakespeare and Goethe. The concept of forma…
Between context and comparability: Exploring new solutions for a familiar methodological challenge in qualitative comparative research
2020
Finding the balance between adequately describing the uniqueness of the context of studied phenomena and maintaining sufficient common ground for comparability and analytical generalisation has widely been recognised as a key challenge in international comparative research. Methodological reflections on how to adequately cover context and comparability have extensively been discussed for quantitative survey or secondary data research. In addition, most recently, promising methodological considerations for qualitative comparative research have been suggested in comparative fields related to higher education. The article’s aim is to connect this discussion to comparative higher education rese…

Brief an Karl Axel Christer Freiherr von Bruiningk
1839
Ms. 930a, Nr. 6b, Bl. 19r-19v Merkel, Garlieb H. Brief an Karl Axel Christer Freiherr von Bruiningk, [Depkinshof ?], [bez datuma; ohne Datum, pēc / nach 1839] Autora rokraksts / Autograph, vācu val. / Deutsch, [2] lpp.
Large-angle production of charged pions with incident pion beams on nuclear targets
2009
Measurements of the double-differential pi(+/-) production cross section in the range of momentum 100 <= p <= 800 MeV/c and angle 0.35 <=theta <= 2.15 rad using pi(+/-) beams incident on beryllium, aluminum, carbon, copper, tin, tantalum, and lead targets are presented. The data were taken with the large-acceptance hadron production (HARP) detector in the T9 beam line of the CERN Proton Synchrotron. The secondary pions were produced by beams in a momentum range from 3 to 12.9GeV/c hitting a solid target with a thickness of 5% of a nuclear interaction length. The tracking and identification of the produced particles was performed using a small-radius cylindrical time projection chamber place…
Measurement of an excess ofB¯→D(*)τ−ν¯τdecays and implications for charged Higgs bosons
2013
The concept for this analysis is to a large degree based on earlier BABAR work and we acknowledge the guidance provided by M. Mazur. The authors consulted with theorists A. Datta, S. Westhoff, S. Fajfer, J. Kamenik, and I. Nisandzic on the calculations of the charged Higgs contributions to the decay rates. We are grateful for the extraordinary contributions of our PEP-II colleagues in achieving the excellent luminosity and machine conditions that have made this work possible. The success of this project also relied critically on the expertise and dedication of the computing organizations that support BABAR. The collaborating institutions wish to thank SLAC for its support and the kind hospi…
Search for Anomalous Production of Events with a Photon, Jet, b-quark Jet, and Missing Transverse Energy
2009
We present a signature-based search for the anomalous production of events containing a photon, two jets, of which at least one is identified as originating from a b quark, and missing transverse energy ((sic)(T)). The search uses data corresponding to 2.0 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity from p (p) over bar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 1.96 TeV, collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. From 6.697 47 x 10(6) events with a photon candidate with transverse energy E-T > 25 GeV, we find 617 events with (sic)(T) > 25 GeV and two or more jets with E-T > 15 GeV, at least one identified as originating from a b quark, versus an expectation of 607 +/- 113 event…
Comparison of large-angle production of charged pions with incident protons on cylindrical long and short targets
2009
The HARP Collaboration has presented measurements of the double-differential pi(+/-) production cross section in the range of momentum 100 MeV/c <= p <= 800 MeV/c and angle 0.35 rad <=theta <= 2.15 rad with proton beams hitting thin nuclear targets. In many applications the extrapolation to long targets is necessary. In this article the analysis of data taken with long (one interaction length) solid cylindrical targets made of carbon, tantalum, and lead is presented. The data were taken with the large-acceptance HARP detector in the T9 beam line of the CERN proton synchrotron. The secondary pions were produced by beams of protons with momenta of 5, 8, and 12GeV/c. The tracking and identific…
Parent Training Experiencesin Italy
2017
With this contribution I would like to present the results of an action research project conducted in Palermo by the pedagogical team at the Department of Psychology and Education Sciences between 2010 and 2012. This work intended to test a new parent-training scheme aimed at state schools. The following paragraph will first describe some turning points in the history of adult education in Italy which, in the last two decades, has also included supporting would-be parents, giving rise to a growing number of parent-training initiatives. Then, the novelty of the project is detailed: a main role in it was played by workshop activities conducted in small teams using a narrative dialogue to fost…
