The anatomy and causal structure of a corporate myth: Nokia by the book

In this paper we conceptualise explanations of company-specific commercial performance as corporate myths. To improve our understanding of anatomy and causal structure of corporate myths, we analyse publications that deal with Nokia’s historical transformation from a lossmaking 1980s conglomerate to a focused and successful telecommunications company in the early 1990s. From a corpus of related literature, 89 causal arguments are identified and analysed in terms of the logic of the arguments employed. The aim of this paper is to investigate whether the diffusion and the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) are associated with the size of the place of residence where people live. The article explores how the relationship between ICTs and place of residence changed between 1996 and 2009. The study presents data from two consecutive telephone surveys collected from Italy, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain. Results show an unexpected role of the relatively rural areas as attractor of new technologies. Optical Gating of Photosensitive Synthetic Ion Channels

4-oxo-4-(pyren-4-ylmethoxy) butanoic acid is used as a photolabile protecting group to show the optical gating of nanofluidic devices based on synthetic ion channels. The inner surface of the channels is decorated with monolayers of photolabile hydrophobic molecules that can be removed by irradiation, which leads to the generation of hydrophilic groups. The IEEE 802.16 standard provides a full mobility support for stations moving across cell borders. In addition, the WiMAX Forum Network Working Group defines a set of procedures to support handovers in the mobile access network. One of the main characteristics of mobility support is fully controlled and optimized handover (HO), in which a mobile station (MS) migrates from the air interface of one base station (BS) to another one. Impact of portable device restrictions on IEEE 802.16 performance

IEEE 802.16 is a good alternative for fast wireless connection in the next generation portable information devices (PID). However it was not originally designed for portable devices, but mobility was added later to the specification. This means that the lack of resources on portable devices might have a significant impact on which IEEE 802.16 features should be chosen and how they should be used. Proper usage of ARQ can increase the IEEE 802.16 performance but it can also require much resources from PIDs. In this paper we focus on how ARQ features are affected by limited resources on PID and how much the limitations affect on the performance.
QoS Support for Time-Constrained Multimedia Communications in IEEE 802.11 WLANs: A Performance Evaluation

During the past few years, we have been witnessing the massive deployment of IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs. Even though the widespread deployment of such wireless LANs, many studies are still underway aiming to design and develop simple yet effective QoS mechanisms for supporting time-constrained services over such platforms. In this paper, we first overview five different QoS mechanisms recently introduced in the literature as well as the upcoming IEEE 802.11e (EDCA) standard. We then carry out a comparative performance evaluation of all the QoS mechanisms. We focus our study on the effectiveness of the various QoS mechanisms for supporting time-constrained services.
