Genome-wide Association Studies Identify Genetic Loci Associated with Albuminuria in Diabetes

Elevated concentrations of albumin in the urine, albuminuria, are a hallmark of diabetic kidney disease and are associated with an increased risk for end-stage renal disease and cardiovascular events. To gain insight into the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying albuminuria, we conducted meta-analyses of genome-wide association studies and independent replication in up to 5,825 individuals of European ancestry with diabetes and up to 46,061 without diabetes, followed by functional studies. Selection of endogenous control genes for normalization of gene expression analysis after experimental brain trauma in mice.

Quantitative measurements of gene expression require correction for tissue sample size, RNA quantity, and reverse transcription efficiency. This can be achieved by normalization with control genes. The study was designed to identify candidates not altered after brain trauma. Male C57Bl/6 mice were anesthetized with isoflurane, and a pneumatic brain trauma was induced by controlled cortical impact (CCI) on the right parietal cortex. Background Developmental language disorder (DLD, also called specific language impairment, SLI) is a common developmental disorder comprising the largest disability group in pre-school-aged children. Masked Translation Priming Effects With Highly Proficient Simultaneous Bilinguals

One essential issue for models of bilingual memory organization is to what degree the representation from one of the languages is shared with the other language. In this study, we examine whether there is a symmetrical translation priming effect with highly proficient, simultaneous bilinguals. We conducted a masked priming lexical decision experiment with cognate and noncognate translation equivalents. Results showed a significant masked translation priming effect for both cognates and noncognates, with a greater priming effect for cognates. Therefore, bilingualism has been proposed as a cognitive reserve mechanism. Recent studies have advanced towards an understanding of the brain mechanisms underlying bilingualism's protection against dementia, but none of them deals with white matter (WM) diffusion.
