Commutators of linear and bilinear Hilbert transforms

2003

Let α ∈ R \alpha \in \mathbb {R} , and let H α ( f , g ) ( x ) = 1 π p . v . ∫ f ( x − t ) g ( x − α t ) d t t H_\alpha (f,g)(x)=\frac {1}{\pi } p.v. \int f(x-t)g(x-\alpha t)\frac {dt}{t} and H f ( x ) = 1 π p . v . ∫ f ( x − t ) d t t Hf(x)= \frac {1}{\pi } p.v.\int f(x-t)\frac {dt}{t} denote the bilinear and linear Hilbert transforms, respectively. It is proved that, for 1 > p > ∞ 1>p>\infty and α 1 ≠ α 2 \alpha _1\ne \alpha _2 , H α 1 − H α 2 H_{\alpha _1}-H_{\alpha _2} maps L p × B M O L^p\times BMO into L p L^{p} and it maps B M O × L p BMO \times L^p into L p L^{p} if and only if sign ⁡ ( α 1 ) = sign ⁡ ( α 2 ) \operatorname {sign}(\alpha _1)=\operatorname {sign}(\alpha _2…

The National Bilingual Programme in Colombia: Imposition or Opportunity?

2011

The National Bilingual Programme, created by the Colombian Ministry of Education in 2004, offers all students in the county the possibility of becoming bilingual in English and Spanish as part of a vision of increased productivity in a globalised world. However, the language and education policies promoted within this framework tend to foreground the development of English at the expense of bilingual competence in Spanish and English. This bilingual policy has been strongly criticised by several Colombian academics with regard to what they consider as the imposition in the Colombian context of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, the disregard of local knowledge and exp…

Extension of luminance component based demosaicking algorithm to 4- and 5-band multispectral images

2021

Abstract Multispectral imaging systems are currently expanding with a variety of multispectral demosaicking algorithms. But these algorithms have limitations due to the remarkable presence of artifacts in the reconstructed image. In this paper, we propose a powerful multispectral image demosaicking method that focuses on the G band and luminance component. We've first identified a relevant 4-and 5-band multispectral filter array (MSFA) with the dominant G band and then proposed an algorithm that consistently estimates the missing G values and other missing components using a convolution operator and a weighted bilinear interpolation algorithm based on the luminance component. Using the cons…

An abstract inf-sup problem inspired by limit analysis in perfect plasticity and related applications

2021

This paper is concerned with an abstract inf-sup problem generated by a bilinear Lagrangian and convex constraints. We study the conditions that guarantee no gap between the inf-sup and related sup-inf problems. The key assumption introduced in the paper generalizes the well-known Babuška–Brezzi condition. It is based on an inf-sup condition defined for convex cones in function spaces. We also apply a regularization method convenient for solving the inf-sup problem and derive a computable majorant of the critical (inf-sup) value, which can be used in a posteriori error analysis of numerical results. Results obtained for the abstract problem are applied to continuum mechanics. In particular…

Using a Computerised Corpus in the Construction of a Bilingual Phraseological Dictionary

2016

It is generally acknowledged that one of the main purposes of bilingual dictionaries is to provide learners with relevant and sufficient information about the grammatical, lexical and phraseological units of a language (Yong and Peng 2007: 20). Furthermore, this must be done in a way that is both convenient and comprehensible for very specific kinds of users (Cabre 2007: 80–81; Pecman 2008: 205), namely, non-native speakers who are still developing their linguistic and discourse competence but who have not fully attained the intuitive ability to tackle major grammatical issues. It follows that this kind of learner cannot rely on previous discourse experience and sociolinguistic training in …

Automatic identification of word translations from unrelated English and German corpora

1999

Algorithms for the alignment of words in translated texts are well established. However, only recently new approaches have been proposed to identify word translations from non-parallel or even unrelated texts. This task is more difficult, because most statistical clues useful in the processing of parallel texts cannot be applied to non-parallel texts. Whereas for parallel texts in some studies up to 99% of the word alignments have been shown to be correct, the accuracy for non-parallel texts has been around 30% up to now. The current study, which is based on the assumption that there is a correlation between the patterns of word co-occurrences in corpora of different languages, makes a sign…

Application of elastostatic Green function tensor technique to electrostriction in cubic, hexagonal and orthorhombic crystals

2002

The elastostatic Green function tensor approach, which was recently used to treat electrostriction in numerical simulation of domain structure formation in cubic ferroelectrics, is reviewed and extended to the crystals of hexagonal and orthorhombic symmetry. The tensorial kernels appearing in the expressions for effective nonlocal interaction of electrostrictive origin are derived explicitly and their physical meaning is illustrated on simple examples. It is argued that the bilinear coupling between the polarization gradients and elastic strain should be systematically included in the Ginzburg-Landau free energy expansion of electrostrictive materials.

Impact of Plurilingualism on Learning Quality in Evening (Shift) Schools

2015

<p><em>This paper presents the main findings of the second stage of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Lifelong Learning study (2011-2014) on identification of good practices that facilitate adult learning (aged 18-24) engagement in second chance education in evening (shift) schools. It analyses students’ perceptions of plurilingual learning processes and the impact of people’s plurilingualism on their learning. The methodology of early school leavers’ learning in working life research was used applying combined phenomenological semi-structured and narrative interviews. 116 people (72 early school leavers and 44 second chance education teachers) representing all geographical regions…

Mutual intelligibility among the sign languages of Belgium and the Netherlands

2015

AbstractIn an exploratory study of mutual intelligibility between the sign languages of the northern part of Belgium (Flemish Sign Language, VGT), the southern part of Belgium (French Belgian Sign Language, LSFB), and the Netherlands (Sign Language of the Netherlands, NGT), we tested the comprehension of VGT by signers of LSFB and NGT. In order to measure the influence of iconic structures (classifier constructions and constructed action) that linguistic analyses have shown to be similar across different sign languages, two genres were compared: narrative and informative signing. To investigate the effect of the overlap between the spoken languages surrounding the Dutch and Flemish Deaf com…

Differentiation in language and gesture use during early bilingual development of hearing children of Deaf parents

2014

Hearing children of Deaf parents simultaneously acquire sign language and spoken language, which have many structural differences and represent two different modalities. We video-recorded eight children every six months between the ages of 12 and 24 months during three different play sessions: with their Deaf parent, with the Deaf parent and a hearing adult, and with a hearing adult alone. Additionally, we collected data on their vocabulary development in both sign language and spoken language. Children as young as 12 months old accommodated their language use according to the language(s) of their interlocutor(s). Additionally, the children used a manual modality that included gestures more…
