Root-restricted Kleenean rotations

2010

We generalize the Kleene theorem to the case where nonassociative products are used. For this purpose, we apply rotations restricted to the root of binary trees.

Generation of Valid Labeled Binary Trees

2003

International audience; Generating binary trees is a well-known problem. In this paper, we add some constraints to leaves of these trees. Such trees are used in the morphing of polygons, where a polygon P is represented by a binary tree T and each angle of P is a weight on a leaf of T. In the following, we give two algorithms to generate all binary trees, without repetitions, having the same weight distribution to their leaves and representing all parallel polygons to P.

On the determinization of weighted finite automata

1998

We study determinization of weighted finite-state automata (WFAs), which has important applications in automatic speech recognition (ASR). We provide the first polynomial-time algorithm to test for the twins property, which determines if a WFA admits a deterministic equivalent. We also provide a rigorous analysis of a determinization algorithm of Mohri, with tight bounds for acyclic WFAs. Given that WFAs can expand exponentially when determinized, we explore why those used in ASR tend to shrink. The folklore explanation is that ASR WFAs have an acyclic, multi-partite structure. We show, however, that there exist such WFAs that always incur exponential expansion when determinized. We then in…

A Motzkin filter in the Tamari lattice

2015

The Tamari lattice of order n can be defined on the set T n of binary trees endowed with the partial order relation induced by the well-known rotation transformation. In this paper, we restrict our attention to the subset M n of Motzkin trees. This set appears as a filter of the Tamari lattice. We prove that its diameter is 2 n - 5 and that its radius is n - 2 . Enumeration results are given for join and meet irreducible elements, minimal elements and coverings. The set M n endowed with an order relation based on a restricted rotation is then isomorphic to a ranked join-semilattice recently defined in Baril and Pallo (2014). As a consequence, we deduce an upper bound for the rotation distan…

Matchings in three Catalan lattices

2003

In this note we consider a series of lattices that are enumerated by the well-known Catalan numbers. For each of these lattices, we exhibit a matching in a constructive way.

Generating binary trees by Glivenko classes on Tamari lattices

2003

Using algebraic-theoretic results, we give an algorithm for generating binary trees within Glivenko classes in Tamari lattices. Tamari lattices are lattices of binary trees endowed by the well-known rotation transformation.

The Rotation χ-Lattice of Ternary Trees

2001

This paper generalizes to k-ary trees the well-known rotation transformation on binary trees. For brevity, only the ternary case is developped. The rotation on ternary trees is characterized using some codings of trees. Although the corresponding poset is not a lattice, we show that it is a χ-lattice in the sense of Leutola–Nieminen. Efficient algorithms are exhibited to compute meets and joins choosen in a particular way.

Equations on trees

1996

We introduce the notion of equation on trees, generalizing the corresponding notion for words, and we develop the first steps of a theory of tree equations. The main result of the paper states that, if a pair of trees is the solution of a tree equation with two indeterminates, then the two trees are both powers of the same tree. As an application, we show that a tree can be expressed in a unique way as a power of a primitive tree. This extends a basic result of combinatorics on words to trees. Some open problems are finally proposed.

Discrete wavelet transform based multispectral filter array demosaicking

2013

International audience; The idea of colour filter array may be adapted to multi-spectral image acquisition by integrating more filter types into the array, and developing associated demosaicking algorithms. Several methods employing discrete wavelet transform (DWT) have been proposed for CFA demosaicking. In this work, we put forward an extended use of DWT for mul-tispectral filter array demosaicking. The extension seemed straightforward, however we observed striking results. This work contributes to better understanding of the issue by demonstrating that spectral correlation and spatial resolution of the images exerts a crucial influence on the performance of DWT based demosaicking.

Separations in Query Complexity Based on Pointer Functions

2015

In 1986, Saks and Wigderson conjectured that the largest separation between deterministic and zero-error randomized query complexity for a total boolean function is given by the function $f$ on $n=2^k$ bits defined by a complete binary tree of NAND gates of depth $k$, which achieves $R_0(f) = O(D(f)^{0.7537\ldots})$. We show this is false by giving an example of a total boolean function $f$ on $n$ bits whose deterministic query complexity is $\Omega(n/\log(n))$ while its zero-error randomized query complexity is $\tilde O(\sqrt{n})$. We further show that the quantum query complexity of the same function is $\tilde O(n^{1/4})$, giving the first example of a total function with a super-quadra…
