Structural analysis of rat patellar tendon in response resistance and endurance training.

2009

Little is known about tendon adaptations induced by mechanical loading. Our goal was to evaluate the effects of two different exercise training protocols on adult rat patellar tendon. Ninety-six male Wistar rats were divided into a sedentary group (control), a resistance-trained group and an endurance-trained group. The examinations were performed after 15, 30 and 45 days of training and after 2 weeks of rest since training was stopped. The content of collagen fibers and the cell nuclei number were quantified on tendon cross sections. In order to assess the training effectiveness, we evaluated the heart/body weight ratio, which was higher in 45 day-trained rats than their controls (P<0.01),…

Unusual attempted suicide or covered attempted homicide? A neck stabbing case report and review of literature.

2020

A medico-legal consult is frequently required in a clinical context in order to assess the eventual compatibility of specific wounds with a self- or hetero-infliction. Accordingly, the case of a 52-year-old man with a single, penetrating stab wound of the neck, reported as self-inflicted, is here presented. The forensic aspects, taken into account in order to determine the self- or hetero-infliction nature of the wound, are further discussed and compared to cases described in the literature.

Emotional memory impairment produced by binge drinking in mice is counteracted by the anti-inflammatory indomethacin

2019

Abstract The Binge Drinking (BD) pattern of alcohol consumption, prevalent in adolescents and young adults, has been associated with memory impairment. In addition, evidence shows that alcohol abuse causes neuroinflammation, which may contribute to the brain damage produced by alcohol and explain its cognitive consequences. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of the anti-inflammatory indomethacin in counteracting the memory impairment produced by alcohol (ethanol) in adolescent mice of both sexes. Animals were randomly assigned to one of four groups for each sex: SS (saline + saline), SA (saline + alcohol), SI (saline + indomethacin) and AI (alcohol + indomethacin). They were inje…

Effects of binge drinking and the anti-inflammatory drug indomethacin on spatial memory and cognitive flexibility in mice.

2021

Abstract In previous research, we found that chronic-intermittent ethanol administration (CIEA), a model of binge drinking, impaired emotional memory in mice, and this impairment was counteracted by the anti-inflammatory drug indomethacin. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of CIEA on spatial memory and cognitive flexibility in adolescent mice of both sexes. Animals were randomly assigned to one of four groups for each sex: SS (saline + saline), SA (saline + alcohol), SI (saline + indomethacin), and AI (alcohol + indomethacin). They were injected with saline, ethanol (3 g/kg) or indomethacin (10 mg/kg) for the first three days of each week, throughout three weeks. 96 h after tre…

Associations Between Peer Pressure and Adolescents' Binge Behaviors: The Role of Basic Needs and Coping

2019

Framed from a framework based on the integration of self-determination theory (Ryan & Deci, 2000 Ryan, R. M., & Deci, E. L. (2000). Self-determination theory and the facilitation of intrinsic motivation, social development, and well-being. American Psychologist, 55(1), 68–78. doi:10.1037/0003-066X.55.1.68 [Crossref], [PubMed], [Web of Science ®], , [Google Scholar] ) and Endler and Parker’s (1990) conception of coping strategies, the authors analyzed the relationships between peer pressure and binge behaviors (binge eating and binge drinking) in adolescence. Moreover, the authors explored the mediating role of satisfaction/frustration of basic psychological needs and coping strategi…

Association between marfan syndrome and oral health status : a systematic review and meta-analysis

2019

Background: The purpose was to identify and assess the existing scientific evidence from epidemiologic, non-experimental, observational studies of associations between Marfan’s syndrome and oral diseases. Material and Methods: Electronic literature searches in MEDLINE (OVID), The Cochrane Library, Scopus and the Web of Science were conducted to identify all relevant articles. Eligibility was based on inclusion criteria, and quality assessments were conducted. The outcome variables were probing depth, gingival margin, clinical attachment level, bleeding on probing, gingival status, periodontal status, tooth mobility, furcation involvement and decayed, missing and filled teeth index. After ex…

Damping of rotor conical whirl by asymmetric dry friction suspension

2009

Abstract A new technique for the rotor whirl damping in rotating machinery, based on the elastic suspension of the journal boxes and the use of dry friction surfaces normal to the shaft axis between their supports and the frame, is here analysed theoretically for several cases of rotor systems characterized by mass and constraint asymmetry, where gyroscopic effects are to be expected and conical whirl motions may grow up. The critical flexural speeds can be easily cut off by an adhesive state of the supports and the whirl amplitude can be minimized as well throughout the remaining sliding range. Confining the operative angular speed of the rotor in the range of adhesive contact between the …

High-dose behaviour of CaSO4: Dy thermoluminescent phosphors as deduced by a continuous model for trap depths

1978

Abstract The high-dose behaviour of CaSO4: Dy TL dosimeters observed by some authors is compared with the one deduced by the continuous distribution of trap depths previously proposed by us. A general agreement results.

Ab initioand semiempirical calculations ofH−centers in MgO crystals

1999

The atomic and electronic structure of ${\mathrm{H}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ ions substituting for ${\mathrm{O}}^{2\ensuremath{-}}$ ions in regular sites in MgO crystals are calculated using an ab initio Hartree-Fock (HF) cluster approach and its semiempirical version, intermediate neglect of the differential overlap. The theoretical optical absorption energy is predicted to be 10 eV, which is supported by analysis of experimental data for the ${\mathrm{H}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ centers in a series of ionic crystals. The HF simulations of ${\mathrm{H}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ ion diffusion via direct interstitial hops along the [100] axis predict an activation energy of about 3 eV.

Effects of ball-milling on the hydrogen sorption properties of LaNi5

2009

Abstract Pressure–composition isotherms of LaNi 5 alloys were studied as function of ball-milling time. Results indicate that ball-milling convert a part of the LaNi 5 to a non-absorbing state—a state which does not absorb hydrogen under conditions where un-milled LaNi 5 powders absorb and transform to LaNi 5 H 6 , in addition to particle size reduction and creation of defects. The non-absorbing fraction in the milled sample is found to grow with increase in the ball-milling time. The resistance to the hydride formation of the long-time ball-milled LaNi 5 samples is found to continue even after a 1-h high vacuum annealing at around 1000 K. This indicates that the hydrogen-absorption-resist-…
