Relationships between sediment physico-chemical characteristics and heavy metal bioaccumulation in Mediterranean soft-bottom macrophytes
2001
Abstract Concentrations of Hg, Cd, Pb and Zn in the two seagrasses ( Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa ), green alga Caulerpa prolifera and sediment and some physico-chemical characteristics of the sediment (organic matter, fine fraction (particles Significant correlations between the concentrations of metals in the plants and sediment (alone or normalized with respect to the physico-chemical characteristics) were usually found for Hg and Zn. For Pb only C . prolifera fractions were correlated to the Pb content of the sediment. For Cd no significant correlations were obtained between the metal in the plants and sediment. The concentration factors of the metals in the plants with respe…
Long-term Effects of Bioaccumulation in Ecosystems
2005
Extensive damage to organisms and declines in wildlife populations have been observed together with long-term bioaccumulation and biomagnification of persistent xenobiotic chemicals. Heavy metals, especially organic or biomethylated mercury, lead, cadmium and organic tin compounds have caused environmental damage through bioaccumulation on a local scale. Effects on wildife caused by bioaccumulation of persistent organochlorine compounds are more widespread. However, the causal relationship between a biomagnified compound and the long-term effects have been established in only a few cases. Metabolic transformations, and occurrence of several toxic contaminants together in many cases, complic…
The effect of ash and compost on the content and bioaccumulation of selected heavy metals
2019
Abstract Therefore the carried out study aimed at determination of the effect of high-calcium brown coal ash and compost being produced from municipal sewage sludge on the content and bioaccumulation of heavy metals in potato tubers, wheat grains and rapeseeds during a three-year period. Rapeseeds contained most Cd whereas wheat rains less. Potato tubers, wheat grains and rapeseeds contained more Mn, Ni and Zn in the fertilization objects with municipal sewage sludge with or without coal ash and compared to those where calcium carbonate or coal ash had been introduced into the soil at a dose corresponding to 1.5 Mg CaO · ha–1 at the beginning of this study. Differences in the Mn, Ni and Zn …
Emerging pollutants in the aquatic environment: Assessment in biota and influence of microplastics
2021
Elemental contamination of an open-pit mining area in the Peruvian Andes
2014
New technologies and higher prices of raw materials have promoted the expansion of mining activity throughout the world; if not properly regulated, this activity can lead to contamination of the local and regional environ- ment. The city of Cerro de Pasco is located close to a large open-pit mine and in recent years, several reports have pro- vided evidence of environmental contamination and related health problems. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the contamination in fluvial water, sediments and biological fluids from this area. The collective results show elevated metal and metalloid concentrations in rivers and sediments, especially in the areas downstream of the mine. For instance,…
Using the Trace Element Contents in Bronchoalveolar Lavages to Probe the Human Exposure to Inhaled Particulates
2013
Explosive volcanic eruptions eject large volumes of high surface area, metal-rich dust and ash into the atmosphere. In areas near major volcanic eruptions, humans often interact with these materials and may bioaccumulate heavy and toxic metals. To evaluate these interactions, we examine bronchoalveolar lavage samples (BAL) collected from people exposed to the paroxysmal 2001 Etna eruption. BAL samples reveal a strong enrichment of many toxic heavy metals and the capacity for trace elements released from inhaled particles to induce crystallisation of phosphatic microcryst biominerals in intraaveolar spaces. BAL rare earth element (REE) concentration patterns normalised to shale reveal a ‘V-s…
Biokumulacja pierwiastków w grzybach wielkoowocnikowych - przegląd wybranej literatury
2017
Celem pracy było dokonanie analizy bibliometrycznej wybranych publikacji dotyczących akumulacji pierwiastków w grzybach wielkoowocnikowych (ektomikoryzowych i saprofitycznych) występujących na terenie Europy. Analizie poddano wybrane publikacje z lat 2001-2016 dostępne poprzez serwisy, np.: Springer, Science Direct i Web of Science. Przeanalizowano m.in. akumulowane mikro- i makropierwiastki, miejsca prowadzenia badań oraz typ badań (m.in. badania in situ, badania laboratoryjne). W wyniku przeprowadzonych badań literaturowych stwierdzono, że temat translokacji pierwiastków do grzybów wielkoowocnikowych jest nadal aktualny i cieszy się dużym zainteresowaniem naukowców z wielu krajów europejs…
Removal of Fe(III) from synthetic wastewater into raw and modified clay: Experiments and models fitting
2017
Water pollution by heavy metal ions has become a serious environmental issue especially due to their toxicity and tendency to bioaccumulation. Natural smectite clay was treated using sulfuric acid ...
Increasing temperature and productivity change biomass, trophic pyramids and community‐level omega‐3 fatty acid content in subarctic lake food webs
2021
Climate change in the Arctic is outpacing the global average and land-use is intensifying due to exploitation of previously inaccessible or unprofitable natural resources. A comprehensive understanding of how the joint effects of changing climate and productivity modify lake food web structure, biomass, trophic pyramid shape and abundance of physiologically essential biomolecules (omega-3 fatty acids) in the biotic community is lacking. We conducted a space-for-time study in 20 subarctic lakes spanning a climatic (+3.2 degrees C and precipitation: +30%) and chemical (dissolved organic carbon: +10 mg/L, total phosphorus: +45 mu g/L and total nitrogen: +1,000 mu g/L) gradient to test how temp…
Tissue bioaccumulation patterns, xenobiotic biotransformation and steroid hormone levels in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) fed a diet containing perfl…
2011
In the present study, groups of juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) were fed gelatine capsules containing fish-food spiked with PFOA or PFOS (0.2 mg kg(-1) fish) and solvent (methanol). The capsules were given at days 0, 3 and 6. Blood, liver and whole kidney samples were collected prior to exposure (no solvent control), and at days 2, 5, 8 and 14 after exposure (Note: that day 14 after exposure is equal to 7d recovery period). We report on the differences in the tissue bioaccumulation patterns of PFOS and PFOA, in addition to tissue and compound differences in modulation pattern of biotransformation enzyme genes. We observed that the level of PFOS and PFOA increased in the blood, liver …
