Characterization of petroleum-based products by infrared spectroscopy and chemometrics

2012

Abstract The role of fossil fuels in providing the energy required for automobiles, factories and daily life has seriously concerned the authorities. Consistency of the quality of petroleum-based products is an important aspect of social and environmental criteria in a developed society. High-quality petroleum-based fuels would have several benefits (e.g., reduction in rate of consumption, less environmental pollution and durability of hardware). We review recent advances in the application of infrared spectroscopy in the petroleum industry. We focus on the methods proposed for the determination of a wide range of characteristics in petroleum-based products. We discuss methods based on the …

Basic Mechanisms of Diffusive and Diffusion-Related Oxygen Transport in Biological Systems: A Review

1992

In mammals, energy metabolism of active tissues requires permanent availability of oxygen. Because cessation of O 2 supply results in loss of organ function within seconds or minutes, continual feed of adequate amounts of O 2 to tissue is the most vital task for living organisms. For many years, it therefore has been one of the greatest challenges to physiologists to understand the mechanisms provided by nature to satisfy this need for oxygen.

Biological nutrient removal model No.1 (BNRM1)

2004

This paper presents the results of the work carried out by the CALAGUA Group on Mathematical Modelling of Biological Treatment Processes: the Biological Nutrient Removal Model No.1. This model is based on a new concept for dynamic simulation of wastewater treatment plants: a unique model can be used to design, simulate and optimize the whole plant, as it includes most of the biological and physico-chemical processes taking place in all treatment operations. The physical processes included are: settling and clarification processes (flocculated settling, hindered settling and thickening), volatile fatty acids elutriation and gasÐliquid transfer. The chemical interactions included comprise aci…

Evaluation of the enzymatic activity of selected bacterial strains

2007

Evaluation of the enzymatic activity of selected bacterial strains In these studies we attempted to evaluate the lipolytic, proteolytic and cellulolytic activity of bacterial strains isolated from water and the bottom sediments of Turawa Lake. The following bacterial genera prevailed among the isolated strains: Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Enterobacter, Cellulomonas and Cytophaga. The lipolytic activity was determined using a titrimetric method, the proteolytic activity — using a modified Anson method, and the cellulolytic activity - on the basis of mass decrement of a cellulose disk after 14 days of bacterial culture. The cultures were maintained at 28°C, pH 7.0 with the following substrates: ol…

Biosensors Applied to Quantification of Ethanol in Beverages

2019

Abstract The quality control in the processing of alcoholic beverages is major concern for producers and regulatory agencies, particularly for ethanol content which is mandatory in the label of alcoholic beverages in many countries. The use of biosensors can be of great interest in this context that usually requires laborious and costly protocols. Biosensors are composed by two principal components: the biological recognition element and the transducer. Particularly for ethanol evaluation, the use of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) or oxidase (AOX) is commonly reported in the literature which allowed the production of optical and electrochemical biosensors. These biosensors can aid in the deter…

TiO2-Based Photocatalysis for Organic Synthesis

2010

A major aim of the contemporary chemistry is to replace old environmentally hazardous processes with new, energy efficient routes allowing to reduce or totally avoid the use and production of harmful chemicals and to maximise the quantity of raw material that ends up in the final product. This chapter gives an account of TiO2-based selective photocatalysis as a green synthetic tool for the production of organics. Some case studies of the most common transformations carried out by means of photocatalytic reactions are illustrated in a midway perspective between photochemistry and organic chemistry.

The Chorioallantoic Membrane Assay in Nanotoxicological Research—An Alternative for In Vivo Experimentation

2020

Nanomaterials unveil many applicational possibilities for technical and medical purposes, which range from imaging techniques to the use as drug carriers. Prior to any human application, analysis of undesired effects and characterization of their toxicological profile is mandatory. To address this topic, animal models, and rodent models in particular, are most frequently used. However, as the reproducibility and transferability to the human organism of animal experimental data is increasingly questioned and the awareness of animal welfare in society increases at the same time, methodological alternatives are urgently required. The chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay is an increasingly popu…
