Bayesian hierarchical models for analysing the spatial distribution of bioclimatic indices

A methodological approach for modelling the spatial distribution of bioclimatic indices is proposed in this paper. The value of the bioclimatic index is modelled with a hierarchical Bayesian model that incorporates both structured and unstructured random effects. Selection of prior distributions is also discussed in order to better incorporate any possible prior knowledge about the parameters that could refer to the particular characteristics of bioclimatic indices. MCMC methods and distributed programming are used to obtain an approximation of the posterior distribution of the parameters and also the posterior predictive distribution of the indices. Aproximación cartográfica a la distribución del índice de Emberger en la Comunidad Valenciana

The distribution of Emberger's bioclimatic index in the Valencian Community is mapped on the basis of analysis of meterological data from 91 weather stations within the Community and 28 located in the adjoining provinces. Confirmation is given of the classification as dry areas of several parts of central and southern Alacant, the basins of Lliria and Cofrentes in the province of Valencia and the zone surrounding the mouth of the Ebro in Castelló. The chief humid areas correspond to mountain ranges running along geographical parallels. Links are established with the potential climax formations.
