Protection of living yeast cells by micro-organized shells of natural polyelectrolytes

International audience; Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a eukaryotic model organism, plays a key role in the oxidative stability of fermented products. In order to protect cells against environmental stresses, we report a method of modifying the cell surface architecture while maintaining the internal working properties of the system. The objective was to encapsulate living yeast cells in micro-organized polyelectrolyte shells using layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly. Abstract We have demonstrated that a thermotolerant yeast strain ( Saccharomyces cerevisiae TS1) is much more resistant to dehydration–rehydration treatments than a mesophilic strain of S. cerevisiae . Yeast resistance to dehydration–rehydration was found to be similar in cells from exponential and stationary growth phases. Under controlled rehydration conditions involving gradual rehydration in water vapour, yeast cell viability was maintained at 90–95%. When S. cerevisiae TS1 cells were pre-grown at 37 °C and then dried, controlled rehydration lead to restoration of plasma membrane integrity, indicating important differences in cell envelope architechture of mesophilic and thermotolerant …
The effect of nickel on seed germination and plant sprouting in the case of some Alyssum species

The aim of the researches was to establish the upper limit of nickel concentration in soils that the Alyssum maritimum and Alyssum murale species could tolerate without significantly affecting the germination and the plant sprouting process. The experiment was conducted in 4 variants of 3 repetitions, each repetition including 50 seeds. The watering process of the substrate was performed using distilled water for the control variant (M) and NiSO4 solutions that represented the intervention threshold (V1 – 150 mg/kg) and doses that exceeded the intervention threshold (V2 – 350 mg/kg; V3 – 550 mg/kg and V4 – 750 mg/kg). Fossil fuel price increases, their uneven distribution, environmental issues from their incineration, and lack of guarantees of their energy security are the main drivers for the development of green energy. Agricultural waste is an abundant resource for energy bioprocessing, which improves the functioning of the circular economy. In this study, the following were used as the main indicators: the share of renewable energy and the benefit from it, the coefficient of cyclical use of biomass, and the reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. Metasurfaces are versatile tools for manipulating light; however, they have received little attention as devices for the efficient control of nonlinearly diffracted light. Here, we demonstrate nonlinear wavefront control through third-harmonic generation (THG) beaming into diffraction orders with efficiency tuned by excitation of hybrid Mie-quasi-bound states in the continuum (BIC) modes in a silicon metasurface. Simultaneous excitation of the high-Q collective Mie-type modes and quasi-BIC modes leads to their hybridization and results in a local electric field redistribution.
