Estimating natal dispersal movement rates of female European ducks with multistate modelling

Summary 1 We used up to 34 years of capture–recapture data from about 22 100 new releases of day-old female ducklings and multistate modelling to test predictions about the influence of environmental, habitat and management factors on natal dispersal probability of three species of ducks within the Engure Marsh, Latvia. 2 The mean natal dispersal distances were very similar (c. 0·6–0·7 km) for all three species and were on average 2·7 times greater than breeding dispersal distances recorded within the same study system. 3 We were unable to confirm the kinship hypothesis and found no evidence that young first-nesting females nested closer to their relatives (either mother or sister) than to …

The Indonesian island of Sulawesi harbors a highly endemic and diverse fauna sparking fascination since long before Wallace’s contemplation of biogeographical patterns in the region. Allopatric diversification driven by geological or climatic processes has been identified as the main mechanism shaping present faunal distribution on the island. Ash resuspension related to the 2011–2012 Cordón Caulle eruption, Chile, in a rural community of Patagonia, Argentina

Abstract The 2011–2012 Cordon Caulle eruption emitted about 1 km3 of rhyodacitic tephra. Dominant westerly winds in the region caused most of the primary tephra to deposit in neighboring Argentina. In addition to the impact of widespread dispersal and fallout of primary tephra during the eruption, Argentina was also significantly affected by remobilization of the primary ash even several years after the climactic phase of the eruption. Data from the chloroplast trnL-F region are used to test the delimitation of putative diploid species in the Polypodium cambricum aggregate. In particular, we investigate the distinctiveness of the Macaronesian Polypodium macaronesicum, P. azoricum and the continental P. cambricum, investigate molecular diversity patterns within Macaronesia and establish the identity of putative P. macaronesicum material collected from an area in southern Spain, where it co-occurs with other Macaronesian elements. Rare and threatened pondweed communities in anthropogenic water bodies of Opole Silesia (SW Poland)

The paper presents results of geobotanic studies conducted in anthropogenic water bodies like excavation ponds, fish culture ponds, other ponds, dam reservoirs, ditches, channels and recreational pools incl. watering places in Opole Silesia and surroundings in the years 2002-2005. The research focused on occurrence of threatened and rare pondweed communities.
