The Structural Variety and Metabolism of Proteins
1994
Individual eukaryote cells contain in the order of 104 different proteins, and each animal species contains an even greater number due to differences between the tissues of an individual and between the individuals themselves; furthermore, the protein spectrum changes during the course of development. The number of different proteins to be found in extant organisms may be as high as 1012. The description of this variety, its origin and biological significance is the most extensive theme in comparative biochemistry. This chapter will concern itself with the possibilities for structural variation and the general metabolism of proteins; further chapters will deal with comparative studies of in…
The Insect Mushroom Bodies: a Paradigm of Neural Reuse
2013
This paper is devoted to discuss the implementation of models, which are inspired by the fly Drosophila melanogaster and able to handle open problems in the field of robotics such as attention, expectation and sequence learning. The role of the Mushroom Bodies (MBs) in solving these tasks is analyzed in detail and a unifying plausible biologically inspired model is proposed. The developed neural structure is able to show different capabilities in line with the paradigm of neural reuse. The same neural circuit can be exploited to accomplish multiple tasks showing interesting capabilities such as attention, expectation and delayed match-to-sample. The simulation results here reported suggest a…

Hemostasis and ageing
2008
Abstract On March 19, 2008 a Symposium on Pathophysiology of Ageing and Age-Related Diseases was held in Palermo, Italy. The lecture of D. Mari on Hemostasis and ageing is summarized herein. Physiological ageing is associated with increased plasma levels of many proteins of blood coagulation together with fibrinolysis impairment. This may be of great concern in view of the known association between vascular and thromboembolic diseases and ageing. On the other hand, centenarians are characterized by a state of hypercoagulability and possession of several high-risk alleles and well-known atherothrombotic risk markers but this appears to be compatible with longevity and/or health. Parameters c…
Dualistisches Fortpflanzungsverhalten bei dem protogynen LippfischThalassoma bifasciatum und einige Beobachtungen über dessen Tag-Nacht-Wechsel
1973
1.Thalassoma bifasciatum is a protogynous wrasse with (partial) sexual dimorphism and male dichromatism. Sex-inversion takes place without affecting the color pattern. 2. Males with female-like color dress indulge in group spawning; males with the bright color pattern perform pair spawning. 3. Among the brightly colored males exists a well-established hierarchy. Dominant males only have a particular spawning area in which they spawn daily at a certain time around noon. The spawning area is optically marked by conspicuous behavior of the bright male. Courtship activities towards individual partners are rather superficial. 4. The female has the leading role in pair spawning. In the extremely …
Lymph node evaluation for resected colorectal cancer
2013
SUMMARY The negative impact of regional lymph node metastasis on survival from nonmetastatic colorectal cancers is proportional to the number of nodes harvested. A thorough lymph node examination by the pathologist is essential for accurate staging. Recommendations in the USA and Europe stipulate that a minimum of 12–15 lymph nodes must be examined to accurately predict regional node negativity. The prognostic separation for stage III colorectal cancer obtained by the lymph node ratio is superior to that of the absolute number of positive nodes. The extent of mesenteric resection, pathologic technique, age or tumor location may influence lymph node yield. In the future, biological signific…
