Geometric Considerations in Modeling Oxygen Transport Processes in Tissue

1973

Numerical solution of partial differential equations describing transport processes in capillaries and tissue is used for calculation of oxygen transport to brain tissue. Calculation is based on a three-dimensional network model which covers inhomogeneities in capillary blood flow in a relation of 27:1, This study was performed in order to obtain information about the influence of the main physiological parameters on oxygen tension frequency distribution pattern. Following results were obtained: a)Increase (or decrease) of the oxygen consumption rate in tissue to about twice (or half) of the normal case for cerebral grey matter causes an extreme left (or right) shift of the oxygen tension f…

Silk fibroin scaffolds enhance cell commitment of adult rat cardiac progenitor cells

2013

The use of three-dimensional (3D) cultures may induce cardiac progenitor cells to synthesize their own extracellular matrix (ECM) and sarcomeric proteins to initiate cardiac differentiation. 3D cultures grown on synthetic scaffolds may favour the implantation and survival of stem cells for cell therapy when pharmacological therapies are not efficient in curing cardiovascular diseases and when organ transplantation remains the only treatment able to rescue the patient's life. Silk fibroin-based scaffolds may be used to increase cell affinity to biomaterials and may be chemically modified to improve cell adhesion. In the present study, porous, partially orientated and electrospun nanometric n…

Naturally occurring polyphenols as building blocks for supramolecular liquid crystals – substitution pattern dominates mesomorphism

2021

A modular supramolecular approach towards hydrogen-bonded liquid crystalline assemblies based on naturally occurring polyphenols is reported. The combination of experimental observations, crystallographic studies and semi-empirical analyses of the assemblies provides insight into the structure–property relationships of these materials. Here a direct correlation of the number of donor OH-groups as well as their orientation with the mesomorphic behavior is reported. We discovered that the number and orientation of the OH-groups have a stronger influence on the mesomorphic behavior of the supramolecular assemblies than the connectivity (e.g. stilbenoid or chalconoid) of the hydrogen bond donor…

In vivo molecular and morphological imaging by real time confocal mini-microscopy

2006

We evaluated a newly developed miniaturized confocal laser microscopy probe for real-time in vivo molecular and morphological imaging of normal, inflammatory, and malignant tissue in rodents. In the rigid mini-microscopy probe (diameter 7 mm), a single line laser delivers an excitation wavelength of 488 nm. Optical slice thickness is 7 μm, lateral resolution 0.7 μm. The range of the z-axis is 0 - 250 μm below the tissue surface. Organ systems were examined in vivo in rodent models of human diseases. FITC-labeled Lycopersion esculentum lectin was injected or selected cell populations stained for molecular targeting. Morphological imaging was performed using fluorescein sodium, FITC-labeled d…

Infrared-based quantification of clinical parameters

2014

Abstract Infrared (IR) spectroscopy has become a promising technique for the analysis of clinical samples, and IR-based diagnosis is already a well-established technique in the academic field. This review aims to report the methodologies proposed for IR quantification of different analytes and parameters in a variety of clinical samples; including: liquids, such as whole blood, serum, plasma, urine, human milk, amniotic fluid and cerebrospinal fluid; solids, such as urinary stones, skin, hair and lips; breath; or, microscopic quantifications on tissues. For the application of IR spectroscopy to the clinical field, we also discuss: the benefits, which make IR spectroscopy ideally suited to m…

A snapshot of pneumonia research activity and collaboration patterns (2001–2015): a global bibliometric analysis

2019

Background This article describes a bibliometric review of the scientific production, geographical distribution, collaboration, impact, and subject area focus of pneumonia research indexed on the Web of Science over a 15-year period. Methods We searched the Web of Science database using the Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) of “Pneumonia” from January 1, 2001 to December 31, 2015. The only document types we studied were original articles and reviews, analyzing descriptive indicators by five-year periods and the scientific production by country, adjusting for population, economic, and research-related parameters. Results A total of 22,694 references were retrieved. The number of publications in…

Areas of research and clinical approaches to the study of liver abscess

2016

AIM To analyze the research activity on liver abscess (LA) and identify the main topic clusters in the area. METHODS We identified all documents using the medical subject heading "LA" indexed in the MEDLINE database between 2001 and 2015. We performed a descriptive bibliometric analysis, characterizing the evolution of scientific activity, the publication types of the documents, the document categories of clinical interest (case reports, clinical trials, evaluation studies, meta-analysis, observational studies, practice guidelines and validation studies) and the geographic distribution of the research. We also carried out an analysis of networks and research clusters in order to identify th…

A computer program suitable for analysis of choice of categories in biomedical data recognition problems.

1980

The optimum choice of categories in problems of medical data recognition is governed by the choice of categories, the selection of appropriate features, and by the choice of a loss function. Under these circumstances it is often difficult to find out the suitable classification scheme. The computer program described here serves for the design of the optimum recognition procedure. The Bayes rule is used as decision rule. A criterion for the comparison of different choice of categories is given. The program can be performed after estimation of the underlying prior probabilities and the conditional densities obtained from a training set, and before testing the decision rule with real data.
