Two filamentous fungi, Trichoderma harzianum and Trichoderma viride, were compared for their ability to synthesize lipids on different carbon and nitrogen sources. Three culture media were selected for each strain after preliminary screening. All the test media were nitrogen-deficient (C/N = 60) so as to stimulate lipid accumulation. For both microorganisms the glucose-ammonium sulphate medium was the most conducive to lipid production: a lipid accumulation of 17% (w/w) of biomass dry weight was obtained for T. harzianum and of 32% (w/w) of biomass dry weight for T. viride. On the ontogeny and orientation of the Triassic Conodont P1-element in Pseudofurnishius murcianus Van den Boogaard, 1966

Successive growth stages of P1-elements in the Middle to early Late Triassic species Pseudofurnishius murcianus allows the observation of a detailed ontogeny. Besides the gradual enlargement of its curved blade and the growing number of its denticles, a small internal platform develops, eventually followed by an external one, both bearing denticles. The number of denticles on the blade and internal platform increases from five and one in the smallest specimens, respectively, to 14 and 9 in fully developed ones, whereby the distribution pattern of platform-denticles, on the inner one in particular, is of great morphological variety. This report describes for the first time a part of the Middle and Upper Devonian conodont sequence of the Sierra Negra Subfacies in the Aragonian Pyrenees (Spain), establishing the basis for further sound correlations both across the distinct Pyrenean facies and subfacies and on other relevant world areas. The description of 20 conodont taxa and their stratigraphical distribution permits recognition of two separate time intervals. The older one corresponds to the lower Upper Givetian (Middle Devonian), hermanni to crista- tus ectypus zones. Saxonagrion minutus nov. gen. et sp., the oldest damselfly from the Upper Permian of France (Odonatoptera, Panodonata, Saxonagrionidae nov. fam.)

Abstract Saxonagrion minutus nov. gen. et sp. was found in the Saxonian (Salagou Formation) of the Lodeve basin. It is the oldest and the first record of the modern infra-order Panodonata in the Palaezoic (Upper Permian of France). The present discovery supports the hypothesis concerning the persistance of many groups of Odonatoptera through the Permo-Triassic boundary.

Resume Une nouvelle ichnoespece Isopodichnus furcosus est decrite. Elle represente des traces de repos faites probablement par des Branchiopodes notostraces. Frequente dans les formations de Rabejac et du Salagou du bassin de Lodeve, elle est caracterisee par l'existence de structures paires generalement bifides, parfois trifides. This study functionally characterizes the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) plastidial glycolytic isoforms of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPCp) in photosynthetic and heterotrophic cells. We expressed the enzyme in gapcp double mutants (gapcp1gapcp2) under the control of photosynthetic (Rubisco small subunit RBCS2B [RBCS]) or heterotrophic (phosphate transporter PHT1.2 [PHT]) cell-specific promoters. Une faune très diversifiée du Pléistocène inférieur de la Sierra de Quibas (province de Murcia, Espagne)

The Quaternary karstic site of Sierra de Quibas (Abanilla, province of Murcia, Spain) has provided a wide faunal list with more than 60 species. The assemblage of the taxa Arvicola deucalion, Castillomys rivas rivas, Eliomys intermedius, Equus altidens, Capra sp. aff. C. alba and cf. Praeovibos allows the correlation with other Spanish Lower Pleistocene sites in the Betic Cordillera, as Plines 1, Orce 3 and Venta Micena. Therefore Quibas can be located between 1.3 and 1.0 Ma. The palaeoenvironmental features of the area around the karstic cavity and the palaeoclimatic regime are inferred.

Anhydrobiosis is a unique state of living organisms when metabolism is temporarily and reversibly delayed in response to the extreme desiccation of cells. The production of dry active preparations of yeast grown under anaerobic conditions is not currently possible because preparations are extremely sensitive to the dehydration procedure, though they could be very helpful in different biotechnological processes, including bioethanol production. Lactobacillus tucceti sp. nov., a new lactic acid bacterium isolated from sausage

Abstract Following the application of several molecular techniques strain R 19c, isolated from sausage by Reuter in 1970 and deposited at the DSMZ as Lactobacillus sp., has been identified as pertaining to a new species. It showed singular ISR- Dde I and ISR- Hae III profiles that allowed its differentiation from 68 lactic acid bacteria reference strains analyzed. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences places this strain in the genus Lactobacillus within the Lactobacillus alimentarius group. Dehydration of yeast: Changes in the intracellular content of Hsp70 family proteins

Abstract Yeast is known to experience in natural and industrial conditions cycles of dehydration–rehydration. Several molecular mechanisms can be triggered in response to this and other environmental stressors and to rescue yeast cells of the cytotoxic effect. Since heat shock proteins constitute one of the most important systems of the response to stress we studied whether the pre-induced major stress protein, Hsp70, can cope with yeast cell drying. To induce Hsp70 expression the cells of two yeast species, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Debaryomyces hansenii , were subjected to non-lethal heat shock.
