Magnetostratigraphy and biostratigraphy of the Carnian/Norian boundary interval from the Pizzo Mondello section (Sicani Mountains, Sicily)

2001

The 146.5 m-thick Upper Triassic limestone section at Pizzo Mondello in the Sicani Mountains of western Sicily is characterized by high quality of exposure, accessibility, and stratigraphic continuity. Magnetostratigraphic results delineate 12 normal and reverse polarity magnetozones, labelled successively from the base upwards as PM1n, PM1r, PM6n, PM6r. The Carnian/Norian boundary, based on conodont biostratigraphy, falls somewhere in the PM3n to PM5n interval which corresponds to the E14n to E16n magnetozone interval in the Newark reference sequence of polarity reversals. Comparison of magnetobiostratigraphic data from the Newark basin, Pizzo Mondello and other Late Triassic marine sectio…

Thermotolerance in Saccharomyces cerevisiae is linked to resistance to anhydrobiosis

2014

Abstract We have demonstrated that a thermotolerant yeast strain ( Saccharomyces cerevisiae TS1) is much more resistant to dehydration–rehydration treatments than a mesophilic strain of S. cerevisiae . Yeast resistance to dehydration–rehydration was found to be similar in cells from exponential and stationary growth phases. Under controlled rehydration conditions involving gradual rehydration in water vapour, yeast cell viability was maintained at 90–95%. When S. cerevisiae TS1 cells were pre-grown at 37 °C and then dried, controlled rehydration lead to restoration of plasma membrane integrity, indicating important differences in cell envelope architechture of mesophilic and thermotolerant …

Contrasting effects ofWolbachiaon cytoplasmic incompatibility and fecundity in the haplodiploid miteTetranychus urticae

2002

Recent studies on Wolbachia-induced incompatibility in haplodiploid insects and mites have revealed a diversity of cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI) patterns among host species. Here, we report intraspecific diversity in CI expression among four strains of the arrhenotokous mite Tetranychus urticae and in T. turkestani. Variability of CI expression within T. urticae ranged from no CI to complete CI, and included either female embryonic mortality or male conversion types of CI. A fecundity cost attributed to the infection with the high-CI Wolbachia strain was the highest ever recorded for Wolbachia (−80 to −100% decrease). Sequence polymorphism at a 550-bp-portion of Wolbachia wsp gene reveal…

Liming induced stimulation of the amino acid metabolism in mycorrhizal roots of Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.)

1995

Localization and activity of three enzymes involved in the amino acid metabolism of ectomycorrhizas were investigated within an interdisciplinary experiment performed in a mature Norway spruce stand in Southern Germany (Hoglwald). The enzymes NAD-glutamate dehydrogenase and aspartate aminotransferase were present in root cells, whereas aminopeptidase was found in mycorrhizas of Norway spruce such as “Piceirhiza nigra” and those with the fungi Cenococcum geophilum, Elaphomyces sp., Russula ochroleuca and Tylospora sp. Mycorrhizas growing in the humus layer contained about double the amount of protein found in those taken from the upper mineral soil (0–5 cm).

On the biosynthesis of cellulose in higher and lower plants

2007

Kinetic experiments on cotton cellulose and cellulose from the alga Valonia show, that the degree of polymerization during the biosynthesis of the secondary wall is independent of conversion and reaction conditions. During the whole synthesis period it remains constant at a DPw ∼ 13,000 for cotton and 16,500 for Valonia, respectively. Fractionation experiments indicate complete uniformity of the degree of polymerization at every stage of the biosynthesis. This means that the biosynthesis of secondary wall cellulose for both higher and lower plants must be a structure-controlled process and not a time-controlled one. Contrary to this evidence the synthesis of primary wall cellulose takes pla…

Algae biomass: characteristics and applications. Towards algae-based products

2018

This book is a compendium of knowledge on the useful properties of algae in the context of application as a useful component of innovative natural products. It presents all aspects of industrial applications of macroalgae biomass derived from the natural environment. Despite many interesting characteristics, algae are still regarded as undervalued raw material, therefore, present in the following chapters are not only environmental benefits arising from the development of excessive algal biomass, but also the distribution and biology of algae in natural conditions in reservoirs, methods of obtaining extracts from biomass of algae for industrial purposes. Furthermore, it also includes topics…

Coach-created motivational climate and athletes’ adaptation to psychological stress : Temporal motivation-emotion interplay

2019

This two-wave study investigated the temporal interplay between motivation and the intensity and reported impact of athletes’ emotions in training settings. In total, 217 athletes completed self-report measures of motivational climate, motivation regulations, emotional states (i.e., pleasant states, anger, and anxiety) experienced before practice at two time points during a 3-month period. Latent change score modeling revealed significantly negative paths from task-involving climate at time 1 to the latent change in the intensity of dysfunctional anxiety and anger, and significantly positive paths from ego-involving climate at time 1 to the latent change in dysfunctional anger (i.e., intens…
