Changing summer precipitation pattern alters microbial community response to fall wet-up in a Mediterranean soil

2014

The large soil CO2 efflux associated with rewetting dry soils after the dry summer period significantly contributes to the annual carbon budget of Mediterranean grasslands. Rapid reactivation of soil heterotrophic activity and a pulse of available carbon are both required to fuel the CO2 pulse. Better understanding of the effects of altered summer precipitation on the metabolic state of indigenous microorganisms may be important in predicting future changes in carbon cycling. Here, we investigated the effects of a controlled rewetting event on the soil CO2 efflux pulse and on the present (DNA-based) and potentially active (rRNA-based) soil bacterial and fungal communities in intact soil cor…

Urīnvielas ietekme uz parastā bērza (Betula pendula Roth) koksnes iekrāsojumu izraisošām sēnēm

2020

Kora brzozy brodawkowatej jako biomonitor zanieczyszczenia powietrza metalami ciężkimi

2018

Characterization of Self-Growing Biomaterials Made of Fungal Mycelium and Various Lignocellulose-Containing Ingredients

2022

In this study, novel blends of mycelium biocomposites (MB) were developed. Various combinations of birch sawdust and hemp shives with birch bark (BB) and wheat bran (WB) additives were inoculated with basidiomycete Trametes versicolor to produce self-growing biomaterials. MB were characterized according to mycelial biomass increment in final samples, changes in chemical composition, elemental (C, H, N) analyses, granulometry of substrates, water-related and mechanical properties, as well as mold resistance and biodegradability. The mycelial biomass in manufactured MB increased by ~100% and ~50% in hemp and sawdust substrates, respectively. The lignocellulose ingredients during fungal growth…

Acid-catalyzed mechanocatalytic pretreatment to improve sugar release from birch sawdust : Structural and chemical aspects

2022

This study examined acid-catalyzed mechanocatalytic pretreatment of birch sawdust without a separate impregnation step. Catalyst amount and pretreatment time were the key variables. Pretreated material was mixed with water for hydrolysis (100 °C, 60 min). The efficient release of total reducing sugars from birch sawdust is significant to the path towards biofuels and biochemicals. Based on the results, the structure and surface of birch sawdust changed as a function of mechanocatalytic pretreatment. Milling time caused significant transformations in birch structure and also increased the yields of reducing sugars. The highest yield of total reducing sugar from pretreated sawdust was 23.0% a…

Analytical pyrolysis of wood and non-wood materials from integrated biorefinery concepts

2019

Wood and non-wood differ with respect to their anatomical, physical, and chemical properties, even among their species, resulting in different behaviors during thermal conversion. Hence, understanding the degradation of these feedstocks by pyrolysis is attractive to establish biorefinery possibilities for renewable resources. Additionally, biomass pretreatment technology plays an important role in many biorefinery processes. Therefore, an approach that integrates such pretreatment with pyrolysis offers an attractive, novel method for improving the end-product spectrum (e.g., enriched either with aliphatic or aromatic constituents). Furthermore, a rapid analytical method for biomass feedstoc…

Bacterial diseases of energy plants

2017

Przedstawiono wyniki badań bakteryjnych patogenów bioenergetycznych roślin drzewiastych (topoli, brzozy), prowadzących do znacznego zmniejszenia zbiorów lub zaginięcia. Opisano różne choroby bakteryjne i patogeny zaznaczonych roślin, objawy tych chorób, charakterystykê obrażeń, rozmieszczenie i szkodliwość patogenów. Przedstawiono charakterystykê głównych chorób bakteryjnych (rak bakteryjny i martwicę bakteryjną kory) oraz mniej niebezpiecznych (mokradła), zarazy bakteryjne, choroby korzeni i gruźlica). Czynnikiem sprawczym bakteryjnego raku jest bakteria Xanthomonas populi (syn. Aplanobacterium populi). Jako towarzysząca mikroflora czynników wywołujących raka przeważają bakterie z rodzaju …
