Elites and Ecclesiastical Careers in Early Modern Sicily : Bishops, Abbots and Knights

2014

The most recent historiography has confirmed the importance of ecclesiastical careers within the ranks of the Catholic Church (bishops and cardinals) as well as religious orders (abbots and priors) and military orders (primarily the Order of Malta) for early modern family strategies. They were one of the main paths followed by cadet members of the nobility to build, strengthen and even enable the survival of the social prestige and political influence of their families. The role of the clergy was in fact crucial in performing a valuable function of mediation, especially with regard to political power in order to achieve increasingly prestigious awards (titles, offices, prebends). The aim of…

Biskup Franciszek Jop w aktach bezpieki (1952-1976 [1979])

2016

2021

The material analysis of the only surviving copy of the editio princeps of the Historia de la doncella Teodor allows us to date it back to the incunabula era and to attribute its printing to Pedro Hagenbach’s workshop. The close relationship amongst Hagenbach’s workshop, the reformist project of Archbishop Cisneros, and the interests of the Catholic Monarchs sets an editorial and cultural context that supports the adaptation of Teodor to the printing press. This work perfectly agreed with the thematic and ideological guidelines for the renewal of Christian customs and values. The forceful religious and intellectual imposition of the young and learned slave, turned into a “fijadalgo” in the …

2014

ABSTRACT: The 12 th century saw the culmination of a massive reform movement within the Church, intended both to reinforce the figures of the Pope and bishops and to standardise the Western European liturgy, based on the one utilized at that time in the papal chapel. To this end, a number of books were published, among which was a new version of the pontifical, accompanied by an iconographic cycle in which the descriptive dimension of the portrayals stands out prominently to support the text in its task of ritual codification. The aim of this study is to analyse the iconographic cycle that depicts the ritual of church dedication and its relationship with the rubrics described in the rites. …

The Bishop–Phelps–Bollobás point property

2016

Abstract In this article, we study a version of the Bishop–Phelps–Bollobas property. We investigate a pair of Banach spaces ( X , Y ) such that every operator from X into Y is approximated by operators which attain their norm at the same point where the original operator almost attains its norm. In this case, we say that such a pair has the Bishop–Phelps–Bollobas point property (BPBpp). We characterize uniform smoothness in terms of BPBpp and we give some examples of pairs ( X , Y ) which have and fail this property. Some stability results are obtained about l 1 and l ∞ sums of Banach spaces and we also study this property for bilinear mappings.

Some kind of Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property

2016

In this paper we introduce two Bishop–Phelps–Bollobas type properties for bounded linear operators between two Banach spaces X and Y: property 1 and property 2. These properties are motivated by a Kim–Lee result which states, under our notation, that a Banach space X is uniformly convex if and only if the pair (X,K) satisfies property 2. Positive results of pairs of Banach spaces (X,Y) satisfying property 1 are given and concrete pairs of Banach spaces (X,Y) failing both properties are exhibited. A complete characterization of property 1 for the pairs (lp,lq) is also provided.

Conversos, vescovi e inquisitori tra Spagna e Sicilia (secc. XV-XVII)

2022

The wide geography of the Spanish Monarchy under Habsburgs’ rule has long been considered…

The World of Anglo-Saxon Learning

2007

D uring the Anglo-Saxon period, English schools were among the finest in Europe. From English schools came the great masters whose writings instructed generations, centuries even, of Insular and continental students alike: one has only to think of the works of Aldhelm, Bede and Alcuin, which were copied and studied intensively up to the twelfth century and beyond. This achievement is all the more remarkable when one considers that the Anglo-Saxons were among the first peoples in Europe who were obliged to learn Latin as a foreign language if Christianity - a religion of the book par excellence - was to flourish. Throughout the Anglo-Saxon period, English schools benefited from the instructi…
