Elites and Ecclesiastical Careers in Early Modern Sicily : Bishops, Abbots and Knights

2014

The most recent historiography has confirmed the importance of ecclesiastical careers within the ranks of the Catholic Church (bishops and cardinals) as well as religious orders (abbots and priors) and military orders (primarily the Order of Malta) for early modern family strategies. They were one of the main paths followed by cadet members of the nobility to build, strengthen and even enable the survival of the social prestige and political influence of their families. The role of the clergy was in fact crucial in performing a valuable function of mediation, especially with regard to political power in order to achieve increasingly prestigious awards (titles, offices, prebends). The aim of…

2014

ABSTRACT: The 12 th century saw the culmination of a massive reform movement within the Church, intended both to reinforce the figures of the Pope and bishops and to standardise the Western European liturgy, based on the one utilized at that time in the papal chapel. To this end, a number of books were published, among which was a new version of the pontifical, accompanied by an iconographic cycle in which the descriptive dimension of the portrayals stands out prominently to support the text in its task of ritual codification. The aim of this study is to analyse the iconographic cycle that depicts the ritual of church dedication and its relationship with the rubrics described in the rites. …

Conversos, vescovi e inquisitori tra Spagna e Sicilia (secc. XV-XVII)

2022

The wide geography of the Spanish Monarchy under Habsburgs’ rule has long been considered…

A LEGAL OPINION ON WHETHER A PERSON PERFORMING THE FUNCTION (CHURCH OFFICE) OF THE ECONOMIST OF THE POLISH BISHOPS’ CONFERENCE SATISFIES THE CONDITIO…

2019

44 ust. 3 ustawy z dnia 28 sierpnia 1997 r. o organizacji i funkcjonowaniu funduszy emerytalnych, czyli należy do kręgu tzw. 44 ust. 3 ustawy o organizacji i funkcjonowaniu funduszy emerytalnych. Ponieważ jednak osoba wykonująca funkcję Ekonoma KEP pozostaje równocześnie w stosunku pracy z jednostk…

ELITES AND ECCLESIASTICAL CAREERS IN EARLY MODERN SICILY: BISHOPS, ABBOTS AND KNIGHTS

2009

Most recent research on Sicilian aristocracy in early modern age has shown how the elite of the island, while keeping its reference “ideological” models in the titled nobility of feudality, was actually a very composite social group, formed by bureaucrats, lawyers, merchants, former “gabelloti” (major tenants of estates) as well as by professionals. Moreover, joining this heterogeneous aristocratic group was increasingly linked, especially since the end of the sixteenth century, to a large availability of financial resources provided by these “new nobles”. During that period, infact, due to mounting economical troubles, the Spanish monarchy actually made a widespread use of conferring – or,…

El carrusel de los obispos. Redes eclesiásticas en la Monarquía católica

2023

The royal patronage was configured as a space for mobility of bishops not only among the dioceses of continental Spain, but among all the kingdoms and territories of the Habsburg Monarchy, including America. In this context, the examination of the careers of the Spanish prelates who were bishops in Sicily (sometimes before or after occupying Neapolitan sees) allows to reconstruct well-drawn and narrow routes, which hardly communicate with each other. The investigation of these trajectories is a clear demonstration of how ecclesiastical careers woven a warp through the domains of the Habsburg Monarchy over which a web of close relations and exchanges of religious, cultural, and political exp…

Ubertino da Corleone

2020

Studiò teologia a Londra, Oxford, Parigi, fu lettore a Pisa e Padova. In seguito, divenne vescovo d…

Christliche Gestalt des Patriotismus aus der Sicht der Polnischen Bischofskonferenz

2018

The Throne of God as a prototype of primacy in the Church and in creation

2019

This study emphasises the cosmic dimensions of the Church understood as the Throne of God, analysing its understanding in this way by the great writers and thinkers of the ancient world, for example, Philo the Alexandrine, Saint Dionysius the Areopagite and Saint Irene of Lyon. The reconstitution of all the cosmological contexts and understanding of the Throne of God inspired by the texts of the ancient authors is opening a very interesting perspective over the existence of the Church as a cosmic Throne of God and reassembling of all the heavenly and intelligible creations sustained and vivified by the primal light of God transmitted in this way towards the lower degrees of the heavenly ang…

2005

At the end of the Middle Ages, the manner in which the courts of justice punished rapists clearly shows how seriously such crimes were judged at that time. Endeavoring to increase their juristic power and worrying that the propagation of rape would corrupt the entire society and threaten its survival, impelled the judges and their officials —princes, bishops, and municipal bodies — to deal with all complaints and to initiate inquiries about them. A study of the progressive steps undertaken in the preliminary investigations of these cases reveals that after an inquiry into the accuser's reputation, the judges demanded numerous proofs from the victim about the rape. Moreover, a clinical exami…
