Accuracy of check-bite registration and centric condylar position
2002
In a dentate subject a jaw relation can either be determined in maximum intercuspation and is as such given by the occlusal morphology, or the mandibular position can be allocated according to the centric position of the condyles. For comprehensive restorative treatment or analytic measures of the occlusion it is important to record the centric condylar position. Various registration methods have been described in the literature, but there is no consensus on which is the 'best'. The aim of the present study was therefore to assess the accuracy of various registration methods and evaluate a possible influence of the used materials. Four dentists were involved in the clinical part of the stud…
Analysis of potential dynamic concealed factors in the difficulty of lower third molar extraction
2015
Background The purpose of this study was to identify potential concealed variables associated with the difficulty of lower third molar (M3) extractions. Material and Methods To address the research purpose, we implemented a prospective study and enrolled a sample of subjects presenting for M3 removal. Predictor variables were categorized into Group-I and Group-II, based on predetermined criteria. The primary outcome variable was the difficulty of extraction, measured as extraction time. Appropriate univariate and multivariate statistics were computed using ordinal logistic regression. Results The sample comprised of 1235 subjects with a mean age of 29.49 +/- 8.92 years in Group-I and 26.20 …
Local reactions to tick bites
2008
A retrospective histological and immunohistochemical study has been carried out in 25 cases of tick bites recorded in our Departments. The samples that included an attached tick showed a cement cone anchoring the mouthparts to the skin and a blood-soaked, spongiform appearance of the superficial dermis, with a mild neutrophilic and eosinophilic infiltration. The vessels displayed a loose multilayered endothelial proliferation, with plump endothelia, permeated with erythrocytes. A few of them were severed, allowing copious blood extravasation. The established lesions included the following: erythema chronicum migrans-like cases, foreign body granulomas-sometimes containing remnants of the mo…
The pattern of malocclusion in a sample of orthodontic patients from Turkey.
2009
Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of individual traits of malocclusion in a sample of Turkish orthodontic patients. Study design: The present study was based on the examination of dental casts, intraoral photographs and panoramic radiographs of 1507 orthodontic patients (884 females and 623 males). The relationship of the first upper and lower molars according to the Angle?s classification, overjet, overbite, crowding, spacing, posterior crossbite, scissor bite, maxillary median diastema were examined. The Pearson chi-squared and Fisher?s Exact tests were used to determine potential differences in the distribution of malocclusion when stratified by gende…
Electromyographic and patient-reported outcomes of a computer-guided occlusal adjustment performed on patients suffering from chronic myofascial pain
2014
Objectives: Muscular hyperactivity is a potential source of symptoms in patients with temporal-mandibular disorders. An adequate occlusal adjustment may relieve such symptoms. This study aims to measure the effect of shortening the protrusive disclusion time (DT) and balancing the center of occlusal forces (COF) on the EMG recordings and assess the pain reported by chronic patients one month after the computer-guided occlusal adjustment. Study Design: The sample studied comprised 34 patients suffering from chronic facial pain in which the EMG activity of both masseters was recorded by electromyography. By selective grinding we alleviated all the occlusal interferences during the mandibular …
Comparison of electromyographic pattern of sensory experts and untrained subjects during chewing of Mahon cheese
2002
Use of electromyography (EMG) to monitor mastication is a relatively new concept in assessing food physical and sensory properties. Although expert assessment of cheese characteristics is widely used, the effect of training in sensory analysis on mastication patterns, as assessed using EMG is not well known. Nine samples of the same Mahon cheese (60 days ripening) were given to 24 subjects (8 experts, 16 untrained) and EMG recorded for each chewing sequence. Three samples were tested in a single session by each subject, and three sessions carried out on different days. EMG was recorded from four masticatory muscles for each subject. From EMG records the following was extracted: number of ch…
On a peculiar metabasite in hercynian phyllites (sicily)
1976
On the basis of a mineralogical, petrological and chemical study of a “greenstone” complex intercalated in a phyllitic formation in the Western Peloritani Mountains, two main rock types can be distinguished: amphibole-chlorite metabasite (with traces of an old generation of glaucophane), and albite metabasite. The two rock types show considerable differences in composition, a consequence of sodium metasomatism. The study indicates that the greenstone complex is a metaspilite.
Les ambroisies annuelles (Ambrosia artemisiifolia et Ambrosia trifida) : réponse adaptative au désherbage chimique et connectivité des populations da…
2018
The primary aim of this work was to study the risk of resistance evolution to acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibiting herbicides in mugwort (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.) through four points: (i) selection pressure (study of the efficacy of a range of ALS-inhibiting herbicides), (ii) the adaptive response capacity of the weed (determination of the variation in sensitivity to ALS inhibitors between plants and implementation of a recurrent selection programme), (iii) a field study (search for resistance to ALS inhibitors in the field in France), (iv) the study of resistance mechanisms (target-linked - TLR - and non-target-linked - NLR - by a transcriptomics approach). The second objective was to…
Quantification of minerals from ATR-FTIR spectra with spectral interferences using the MRC method.
2017
A method for quantifying the individual components of mineral samples based on attenuated total reflectance - Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) is described, extending the constant ratio (CR) method to analytes absorbing in a common range of wavenumbers. Absorbance values in the spectral region where the analytes absorb relative to the absorbance of an internal standard absorbing at a wavenumber where the analytes do not absorb, permits the quantification of N analytes using measurements at N fixed wavenumbers. The method was tested for mixtures of albite, orthoclase, kaolin and quartz.
Malocclusion characteristics amongst individuals with autism spectrum disorder: a systematic review and meta‑analysis
2022
Abstract Background To estimate the prevalence of malocclusion in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and to assess the relationship between ASD and malocclusion. Methods We searched electronic databases including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane, Embase, SciELO LILACS, Proquest, OpenGrey and Google Scholar. There were no language or publication dates restrictions. Two researchers independently performed selection, data extraction and quality assessment. Quality assessment and risk of bias were evaluated through the Newcastle–Ottawa scale and ROBINS-E tool. Meta-analyses using random effect models were used to estimate pooled measures of prevalence of malocclusion chara…
