Macrofungi in Mediterranean maquis along seashore and altitudinal transects

2014

In semi-arid Mediterranean environments, fungal activity is fundamental for buffering biotic and abiotic stress to the plant and for sustaining a vegetation cover. Despite the important role that fungi play in habitats stability, mycological data from Mediterranean ecosystems are scarce and fragmentary. We investigated fungal diversity in several areas characterized by Mediterranean maquis, from continental Italy, Sicily, and Greece in order to contribute to the analysis of distribution, ecology, and diversity of macrofungi in evergreen sclerophyllous shrublands at different elevation and distance from the seashore across the Mediterranean Basin. Several fungal taxa that are remarkable due …

Synthesis of enantiopure pyrrolidine-derived peptidomimetics and oligo-beta-peptides via nucleophilic ring-opening of beta-lactams.

2006

The synthesis of the two enantiomers of pyrrolidine-derived spiro beta-lactams by resolution with D- and L-Boc phenylalanine is described. The potential of these optically active spiro beta-lactams on the synthesis of peptidomimetics as analogues of melanostatin is evaluated. Theoretical studies of several models, at the Becke3LYP/6-31+G* level of theory, together with previous experimental evidences from our group, gathered by NMR, allow us to design structures that can efficiently mimic some biologically active peptide-type molecules. On the other hand, the spiro beta-lactams have shown their utility in the preparation of beta-peptides. As an example, a homo-tetra-beta-peptide was synthes…

In-mouth mechanisms leading to flavor release and perception.

2011

Review; International audience; During eating, foods are submitted to two main oral processeschewing, including biting and crushing with teeth, and progressive impregnation by saliva resulting in the formation of a cohesive bolus and swallowing of the bolus. Texture influences the chewing behavior, including mastication and salivation, and in turn, these parameters influence texture perception and bolus formation. During this complex mouth process, flavor compounds are progressively released from the food matrix. This phenomenon is mainly dependent on the food texture, the composition and in-mouth breakdown, and on saliva impregnation and activity, but an individual's anatomical and physiol…

Steccherinum straminellum, a new record for Italy

2012

The first Italian record of Steccherinum straminellum is reported from Sicily. This collection represents the first record on wood of broadleaved trees. A description and line drawing of the species based on the Sicilian specimens are provided along with notes on the taxonomy, ecology, and distribution of this rare taxon.

Some considerations in support of solid propulsion for space debris disposal.

2011

Some considerations on the use of solid rocket motors for space debris disposal are presented. From the synthesis of a de-orbit sample mission and a tradeoff study on costs and benefits, a solid propellant unit for end-of-life missions and debris in-space disposal missions is evaluated. The enhanced operation flexibility, the propellant development and an advanced ignition concept granting multiple and independent firing capability of a new solid propulsion concept are discussed.

Australohydnum dregeanum new to Italy

2014

We report on the first finding in Italy (and the third in Europe) of Australohydnum dregeanum. A detailed description of the macro- and micromorphological features, the ecological data, and some taxonomic remarks concerning this taxon are provided. The bluish tint in the centre of the hymenophoral surface and the non-cystidiform aspect of the marginal hyphae are previously undescribed characters.

Fingernails - foreign objects in root canal: a case report

2011

Foreign objects in the pulp chamber or root canal are not unusual findings in patients undergoing root canal treatments in which canals have been left open for drainage. Detailed case history, clinical and radiographic examinations are necessary to come to a conclusion about the nature, size, location of the foreign body and difficulty involved in its retrieval. This kind of situation is more likely to occur in children due to their habit of placing foreign objects in the mouth. The foreign objects may act as a potential source of infection and may later lead to a painful condition. Reported here is an unusual case of metallic pin along with multiple nail pieces retrieved from root canal of…
