Chlorination step (C-step), spent bleach liquor from a kraft pulp mill and the product from the chlorination of guaiacol in aqueous solution have been investigated for their content of chlorinated catechols. After separation the samples were derivatized with diazoethane and analysed by glass capillary gas chromatography with an electron capture detector. The external standard mixture of all ethylated chlorocatechols was used in the measurements. The structures of the compounds identified were confirmed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The recent advancements of three laser-based diagnostic technologies developed at the Riga group are briefly reviewed: (i) RGB imaging of cw-laser excited skin autofluorescence intensity and photobleaching rate distributions, (ii) ps-laser excited skin autofluorescence and diffuse reflectance kinetics analysis, (iii) snapshot RGB skin chromophore mapping under triple-laser illumination. Summary Nuclear positioning and dynamic interactions of viral proteins with nuclear substructures play essen- tial roles during infection with DNA viruses. Visual- ization of the intranuclear interactions and motility of the parvovirus replication protein (NS1) in living cells gives insight into specific parvovirus protein- cellular structure interactions. Mass transfers of various molecules in multiphasic food products lead to quality modification and thus require the use of edible films or coatings in-between the foodstuff. Consequently, it is important to assess the barrier properties and efficiencies of edible films as well as to determine the diffusivities of the migrants. Aim To evaluate microleakage of a flowable composite used as a protective isolating base, applied with different adhesive systems. Methodology Seventy root-filled teeth were divided into seven groups. A flowable composite base (Tetric Flow Chroma) was used with three adhesive techniques (Syntac, Excite, Excite DCS; in the three cases with and without acid etching) and in a control group without dentine conditioning or adhesive placement. Model compounds of spent bleach liquor: 2,3,6-trichloro-p-cymenene and 2,3,5-trichloro-p-cymenene

Abstract 2,3,6-Trichloro-p-cymene (1) was synthesized by chlorination of p-cymene. A reaction mixture was distilled in a Fischer-Spaltrohr distilling apparatus. One fraction contained small quantities of chlorinated cymenenes (two isomers) which were concentrated by preparative gas chromatography. Their FTIR and mass spectra were recorded. In earlier paper the structures of 2,3,6-trichloro-p-cymenene were verified by means of its coupled 13C NMR and mass spectra. In the present work the mass and FTIR spectral data of 2,3,5-trichloro-p-cymenene and 2,3,6-trichloro-p-cymenene are published.

Protein diffusion in mammalian cell cytoplasm.

We introduce a new method for mesoscopic modeling of protein diffusion in an entire cell. This method is based on the construction of a three-dimensional digital model cell from confocal microscopy data. The model cell is segmented into the cytoplasm, nucleus, plasma membrane, and nuclear envelope, in which environment protein motion is modeled by fully numerical mesoscopic methods. Finer cellular structures that cannot be resolved with the imaging technique, which significantly affect protein motion, are accounted for in this method by assigning an effective, position-dependent porosity to the cell.
