Assessment of cerebral microbleeds by susceptibility-weighted imaging at 3T in patients with end-stage organ failure

2018

Purpose: Cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) are small rounded lesions representing cerebral hemosiderin deposits surrounded by macrophages that results from previous microhemorrhages. The aim of this study was to review the distribution of cerebral microbleeds in patients with end-stage organ failure and their association with specific end-stage organ failure risk factors. Materials and methods: Between August 2015 and June 2017, we evaluated 15 patients, 9 males, and 6 females, (mean age 65.5 years). Patients population was subdivided into three groups according to the organ failure: (a) chronic kidney failure (n = 8), (b) restrictive cardiomyopathy undergoing heart transplantation (n = 1), and (…

Aspirin treatment improves bladder function after outlet obstruction in rabbits.

2001

Abstract Objectives. To examine whether bladder smooth muscle dysfunction after outlet obstruction could be altered by treatment with aspirin. Long-term outlet obstruction causes contractile and metabolic dysfunction of the bladder in vivo and in vitro. The evidence is growing that a decrease in bladder perfusion is an important cause of this phenomenon. The platelet aggregation inhibitor, acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), has been used to improve perfusion of the heart for decades. Methods. Ten male New Zealand white rabbits were obstructed for 4 weeks. Five rabbits received no further treatment (Obs), and 5 rabbits received 2 mg/kg/day aspirin (Obs+aspirin), administered by an osmotic pump …

Bleeding prophylaxis in a child with cleft palate and factor VII deficiency: a case report.

2006

Bleeding prophylaxis in a child with cleft palate and factor VII deficiency: a case report. Pirrello R, Siragusa S, Giambona C, D'Arpa S, Cordova A, Moschella F. Source Dipartimento di Discipline Chirurgiche ed Oncologiche, Sezione di Chirurgia Plastica e Ricostruttiva, Università di Palermo, Palermo, Italy. Abstract The association between factor VII deficiency and cleft palate has never been described. The case of a child with cleft palate and factor VII deficiency who successfully underwent palatoplasty is described in this article. To allow surgical treatment, through maintenance of a normal prothrombin time, the patient was given 15 microg/kg of recombinant factor VIIa every 12 hours, …

A rare complication of ERCP: Mallory-Weiss syndrome

2005

OBJECTIVE: To describe the management and outcome after endoscopic treatment of hematemesis by Mallory-Weiss Syndrome (MWS) occurred after CPRE (suspected choledocolithiasis). Background data: Although cough and retching is common during EGD or CPRE, MWS resulting from endoscopy seems to be uncommon (0.0001-0.04%) and always self-limiting. Case report: The patient was submitted to CPRE with the suspicion of choledocholithiasis. Eight hours after CPRE the patient presented with hematemesis amd hypotension. With emergency EGD, the AA identified a small bleeding mucosal tear (visible vessel with spurting) just proximal to the esophagogastric junction. The patient was safely treated with endosc…

Association between marfan syndrome and oral health status : a systematic review and meta-analysis

2019

Background: The purpose was to identify and assess the existing scientific evidence from epidemiologic, non-experimental, observational studies of associations between Marfan’s syndrome and oral diseases. Material and Methods: Electronic literature searches in MEDLINE (OVID), The Cochrane Library, Scopus and the Web of Science were conducted to identify all relevant articles. Eligibility was based on inclusion criteria, and quality assessments were conducted. The outcome variables were probing depth, gingival margin, clinical attachment level, bleeding on probing, gingival status, periodontal status, tooth mobility, furcation involvement and decayed, missing and filled teeth index. After ex…

Emergency sclerotherapy or band ligation combined with vasoactive drugs for bleeding esophageal varices in cirrhosis

2019

This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (Intervention). The objectives are as follows: To assess the efficacy as well as adverse events of emergency sclerotherapy (or band ligation) combined with pharmacological treatments versus sclerotherapy (or band ligation) alone or vasoactive drugs alone for acute variceal bleeding in cirrhotic patients based on the results of randomised clinical trials (RCTs).

Efficacy of electrical neuromuscular stimulation in the treatment of chronic periodontitis

2011

Purpose: The purpose of the present randomized controlled clinical study was to evaluate the short-term outcomes of microcurrent electrical neuromuscular stimulation (MENS) as an adjunct method to nonsurgical periodontal therapy. Methods: Twenty patients with moderate to severe chronic periodontitis were recruited into the study and randomly treated with either nonsurgical periodontal therapy followed by 5 MENS treatments with a microcurrent device or by nonsurgical periodontal therapy alone. Periodontal parameters were measured at baseline and 6 weeks following therapy, and included the plaque index, bleeding on probing, probing depth, and clinical attachment level (CAL). Results: All meas…

Prospective study of monolithic zirconia crowns: clinical behavior and survival rate at a 5-year follow-up

2020

Purpose To evaluate the clinical behavior and survival of full coverage monolithic zirconia crowns on posterior teeth over a 5-year follow-up. Methods Fifty patients were recruited and underwent restoration with a Lava Plus monolithic zirconia crown (Lava™ Frame Zirconia, 3M Espe, Germany) on premolars or molars. Patients were monitored over a 5-year follow-up (2014-19), recording any biological and/or mechanical complications; these data were used to estimate the crowns' success rate. Periodontal clinical parameters were recorded (pocket probing depth (PPD), plaque index (PLI), bleeding on probing (BOP), and gingival recession (GR)). Wear to the zirconia crowns and antagonist teeth were al…

Hemorrhage in patients under oral anticoagulation for atrial fibrillation. The other side of the coin

2019

Abstract Introduction and objectives Oral anticoagulation therapy is prescribed to most patients with atrial fibrillation. The main limitation of anticoagulant treatment is the occurrence of bleeding episodes. We sought to assess the type of hemorrhages and mortality in patients anticoagulated for nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. Methods Observational retrospective study analyzing 2 081 138 hospitalization reports from 2014 corresponding to 151 hospitals of the Spanish National Health System. Patients were selected with the diagnosis of hemorrhage, nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, and oral anticoagulation. Results A total of 5783 hospitalizations were analyzed. Most hemorrhages were digesti…
