Benign intracranial hypertension associated to blood coagulation derangements

Abstract Background Benign Intracranial Hypertension (BIH) may be caused, at least in part, by intracranial sinus thrombosis. Thrombosis is normally due to derangements in blood coagulation cascade which may predispose to abnormal clotting activation or deficiency in natural inhibitors' control. The aim of the study is to examine the strength of the association between risk factors for thrombosis and BIH. Summary Blood transfusions may prevent and treat serious complications related to sickle-cell disease (SCD) when performed according to specific guidelines. However, blood transfusion requirements in SCD inevitably lead to increased body iron burden. An adequate chelation treatment may prevent complications and reduce morbidity and mortality. This review evaluates the effectiveness, safety and costs of chelation treatment. Obesity is a common disease with an ever-increasing prevalence and usually with late-onset consequences. If acquired during childhood, it tracks into adult life to some extent, and since the relationship between obesity and hypertension is well established in adults, obese children appear to be at particularly high risk of becoming hypertensive adults. In the authors' study, obese children seemed to have significantly higher casual and ambulatory blood pressure than nonobese children, except for nighttime diastolic blood pressure. Muscarinic mobilization of choline in rat brain in vivo as shown by the cerebral arterio-venous difference of choline.

In anesthetized rats, the choline levels of cerebrospinal fluid and plasma obtained from blood collected from peripheral vessels (carotid artery, cardiac vessels) and from the transverse sinus were determined with a radioenzymatic assay. Cortical release of choline was studied using the "cup technique." The plasma choline level of the peripheral blood (11.5 mumol/L) was lower than that of the sinus blood. The resulting cerebral arterio-venous difference of choline was negative (3.2 mumol/L) and reflected the net release of choline from the whole brain. Laser Doppler fluxmetry may improve the monitoring of cortical blood flow in neurosurgical patients. So far, however, the variability of laser Doppler readings found in the cerebral cortex has prevented a consequent usage of the technique in clinical practice. The current report analyzes the regional variability of laser Doppler readings from experimental animals. Typical frequency histograms of observed flow values display non-Gaussian distributions. Distribution of lymphocyte surface antigens in healthy neonates.

Using flow cytometric analysis we investigated the distribution of major lymphocyte surface antigens in newborn infants. A total of 221 newborns entered the study, of whom 53 fullfilled our criteria of healthy mature neonates. The fate of 106 collaterals was investigated following percutaneous transluminal dilatation of 113 stenoses and occlusions. Following dilatation, 78% of collaterals were unchanged and 22% could no longer be demonstrated. The success of the dilatation had no bearing on the fate of the collaterals. Collaterals beginning or ending in a dilated portion of vessel disappeared more frequently (30%) than the others (11%).
