Wireless ECG and cardiac monitoring systems: State of the art, available commercial devices and useful electronic components
2021
Abstract Wireless ElectroCardioGram (ECG) systems are employed in manifold application fields: tele-monitoring, sport applications, support to ageing people at home, fetal ECG, wearable devices and ambulatory monitoring. The presence of cables often hinders user’s free movements, alongside clinicians’ routine operations. Therefore, wireless ECG systems are desirable. This paper aims at reviewing the solutions described in the literature, besides commercially available devices and electronic components useful to setup laboratory prototypes. Several systems have been developed, different in terms of the adopted technology; when approaching the development of a wireless ECG system, some import…
A novel technique for the CMRR improvement in a portable ECG system
2017
This paper presents a new technique to improve the quality of the ECG signals, increasing the Common Mode Rejection Ratio (CMRR). We developed a portable wireless Bluetooth ECG system able to acquire 12 leads, communicating with Smartphones and PCs. Many experiments have been made for measuring CMRR decay due to the difference on skin-electrodes impedances, the asymmetries of the amplifiers input stages and external components. Using some digital potentiometers, the system is able to compensate for these, increasing the CMRR of about 18 dB.
Human Figure Recognition and the Estimation of its Direction
2006
This work describes a method used to recognize a person situated in indoor environments. It estimates the direction in which the person is turned. The position coordinates are known to the system thanks to localization techniques that use Bluetooth technology. The utilization of such information in intelligent environments allows the execution of actions that interact with the customer. The paper focuses on our human figure recognition technique, which uses image analysis to calculate the direction angle a person is turned towards. Figure recognition is accomplished by comparing the colours of the body parts that mark it out, such as: hair colour, face colour, and clothes colour. The calcul…
Low-Power Wide-Area Networks for Sustainable IoT
2019
Low-power wide-area (LPWA) networks are attracting extensive attention because of their abilities to offer low-cost and massive connectivity to Internet of Things (IoT) devices distributed over wide geographical areas. This article provides a brief overview on the existing LPWA technologies and useful insights to aid the large-scale deployment of LPWA networks. Particularly, we first review the currently competing candidates of LPWA networks, such as narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) and long range (LoRa), in terms of technical fundamentals and large-scale deployment potential. Then we present two implementation examples on LPWA networks. By analyzing the field-test results, we identify several chall…
Mobile Encounter Networks and Their Applications
2008
This article presents mobile encounter networks (MENs), which emerge when mobile devices come across each other and form a temporary connection between them using a common short-range radio technology. Local information exchanges between mobile devices results in a broadcast diffusion of information to other users of the network with a delay. Gasoline price comparison system (GPCS), which delivers newest gasoline prices to mobile users using mobile encounter information diffusion, is described as well as other application areas where MENs could be used. The feasibility of building MENs using bluetooth is tested with the BlueCheese mobile encounter network middleware and it is found that the…

Evaluating Bluetooth Performance as the Support for Context-Aware Applications
2005
We present an experiment relative to the use of the Bluetooth wireless technology to provide network support for context-aware applications. We describe an approach to provide network interconnection using a combination of wireless and wired network technologies. We also describe the steps taken to create a Bluetooth based context-aware application. We, finally, evaluate, using a small test-bed and simulation the overall performance of this technology when adopted in the area of context-aware and ubiquitous computing.
Iekštelpu atrašanās vietas noteikšana, izmantojot Android viedtālruni
2019

Full Wave Solution for Intel CPU With a Heat Sink for EMC Investigations
2010
A CPU with a heat sink (e.g. Intel Pentium 4 and Intel Pentium dual core) is a challenging problem for EMC analysis. A Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) device was modelled using the Finite Element Method (FEM) frequency domain solver to obtain a 3D full wave solution. The electromagnetic (EM) radiation emitted from these high power microelectronic circuits connected to a heat sink was found to have resonant frequencies around 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz with reflection coefficients less than -19 dB and -8 dB respectively. These resonant frequencies are very close to the operating frequency of both IEEE and Bluetooth wireless communication systems. This paper proposes a new benchmark model based on …
