Separazione della beta-N-metilammino-L-alanina (BMAA) in campioni di liquor cefalorachidiano mediante HPLC con rilevazione fluorimetrica

TOXICITY OF B-N-OXALYLAMINO-L-ALANINE ANDB-N-METHYLAMINO-L-ALANINE IN NIH3T3 CELLS IS MEDIATED BY INHIBITIONOF THE XC¯ ANTIPORTER
2012
Beta-N-oxalylamino-L-alanine (BOAA) and beta-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) are two non-protein amino acids reported to induce neuronal degeneration. They have been involved in the pathogenesis of rare motor neuron diseases, as neurolathyrism or the ALS-Parkinson-Dementia complex of Guam. The mechanisms by which BOAA and BMAA toxicity is explicated is still unknown, but there is evidence that it might involve the inhibition of Xc¯ antiporter, that is the rate-limiting transporter of the synthesis of intracellular glutathione. In the present study, we investigated the mechanisms of BOAA and BMAA toxicity in the non-neuronal NIH3T3 cells. First, we treated NIH3T3 cells with BOAA or BMAA at di…

The Sacred Fire
2012
The fire on Mount Parnassus that gave rise to the temple of the Oracle of Delphi was not the only spontaneous outflow of natural gas known to the Ancient World. People in ancient India, Persia and China knew about these fen fires, and there they also used to attribute them to supernatural causes, at least until 500 BC, when the Chinese built the first gas pipelines––using bamboo!––many centuries ahead of the West, as on many other occasions.
Petrology and geochemistry of submarine volcanism in the Sicily Channel Rift
2006
Submarine magmatism in the Sicily Channel Rift began in the early Pliocene and lasted until almost 200 yr ago. We present here petrological and geochemical data on volcanic rocks dredged from Graham and Nameless banks and Pantelleria seamounts in the Pelagian sector of the Sicily Channel Rift. Petrological evidence suggests that the ascent of magmas to the surface was relatively rapid, probably through channels superimposed over the major tectonic discontinuities of the Rift. Major and trace element data indicate an ocean island basalt affinity for Graham and Nameless bank alkaline lavas and a depleted tholeiitic signature for one Pantelleria seamount, which had a shallower mantle source. S…
Eiropas Savienības ekonomiskā attīstība: nozaru un reģionu dimensijas
2020
Šajā darbā tiek pētīta investīciju efektivitāte ražošanas nozarēs un ekonomiskās izaugsmes faktori Eiropas Savienībā NUTS2 reģionu līmenī laika posmā no 2002. līdz 2018. gadam.
Offshore Assets in the Transition from ‘Traditional Business Practice’ to ‘Connected Business Eco-systems’
2020
In many industrial sectors we have already begun to see how new business ecosystems gradually emerge turning the traditional business practices upside down. Particularly within relatively conventional sectors, such as upstream oil and gas (O&G) and land-based process industry, we expect to see substantial changes in the years to come. In this paper, we elaborate on principal challenges related to major structural changes and core technology platforms for the oil industry identifying critical features and elaborating on emerging operational principles. This is based on a critical review of latest industry conditions and practices that are targeted towards the creation of new business models …
Geochemical characterization of groundwater and submarine discharge in the south-eastern Sicily
2006
Abstract The main results of a hydrogeochemical survey carried out during 2002–2003 along the coast of the south-eastern Sicily, which aimed at geochemical characterization of both groundwater chemistry and submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) in the area are presented. A general frame of chemical processes affecting the studied groundwater and SGD point out that most samples fall within the calcite-anhydrite-dolomite field (CAD). The chemical composition of the samples within the CAD triangle is essentially controlled by calcite, dolomite and gypsum dissolution, which are the main minerals of the carbonate rocks hosting the aquifers. An additional process evidenced in this study is a mixi…
alpha GalNAc is essential for recognition of Exo-1 epithelial antigen by mouse monoclonal antibody Pa-G-14.
1993
Mouse monoclonal antibody Pa-G-14 detects Exo-1, an antigen whose expression is regulated in the processes of epithelial-cell differentiation and transformation. The epitope recognized by Pa-G-14 is present both in glycosphingolipids and in mucin glycoproteins. To characterize the specificity of Pa-G-14, immuno-thin-layer chromatography, biochemical, and enzymatic treatment of glycosphingolipid extracts from human pancreas were used. The antibody bound to all blood-group-A substances; alpha GalNAc, but not fucose, was essential for reactivity. In ELISA, Pa-G-14 also reacted with ovine and bovine submaxillary mucins but not with porcine submaxillary mucin. Binding to ovine submaxillary mucin…
