Comparison of Body Composition and Energy Intake of Young Female Ballet Dancers and Ordinary School Girls
2017
Abstract The aim of this study is to assess body fat level, energy and nutrient intake of adolescent ballet dancers and to compare these results with those of adolescents from ordinary school. Participants included 39 ballet dancers and 70 adolescents from ordinary school. Body composition was measured using a multi-frequency 8-polar bioelectrical impedance leg-to-hand analyser (X-Scan Plus II, Korea). Dietary intakes were assessed using a three-day estimated food record. Nutritional intake was calculated using the Nutri Survey software. Ballet dancers were slightly shorter, lighter, with less fat and fat-free mass compared to girls from ordinary school. 51.3% (95% CI 35.59 to 66.97) of bal…
Hill Runner's Physiology, Performance and Nutrition: A Descriptive Study.
2021
Objectives: The aim of this descriptive study was to characterise anthropometric variables, aerobic capacity, running performance and energy intake and expenditure of hill runners in free-living conditions, and to investigate the relationship between age, anthropometric variables, aerobic capacity and running performance. Methods: Twenty-eight hill runners participated in this study (17 males and 11 females; aged 18–65 years). Body fat percentage estimate, sum of eight skinfolds (triceps, subscapular, biceps, iliac crest, supraspinale, abdominal, front thigh and medial calf) and maximal oxygen capacity (VO2max) were assessed in a laboratory setting. Participants also completed a timed hill r…
Concurrent endurance and strength training : neuromuscular, cardiorespiratory and hormonal effects of the exercise order in previously untrained and …
2015
The aim of the present thesis was two-fold. First, to investigate physiological adaptations to concurrent endurance and strength training performed in the same session with different exercise orders (i.e. commencing training with endurance or strength, respectively; E+S vs. S+E) in previously untrained men (n=42) (study 1). Second, to examine physiological adaptations when strength training was always performed immediately after endurance running in the same session (E+S) compared to endurance training alone (E) in recreational endurance runners (n=30) (study 2). In study 1, training consisted of 2 - 3 weekly combined endurance cycling and mixed hypertrophic and maximal strength training se…
Effects of 24 weeks of single session combined strength and endurance training on body composition and fitness : examination of order effect
2013
Küüsmaa, Maria 2013. Effects of 24 weeks of single session combined strength and endurance training on body composition and fitness: examination of order effect. Department of Biology of Physical Activity, University of Jyväskylä. Master’s Thesis in Science of Sport Coaching and Fitness Testing. 82 pp. Endurance and strength training are often performed concurrently. The question of whether the order of exercise yields to different adaptations in body composition, when strength (S) and endurance training (E) are combined into the same training session, has received only limited scientific attention. In addition, neuromuscular and cardiorespiratory adaptations to single session combined trai…
Physical activity during pregnancy and early childhood from the perspective of gestational diabetes risk and children's body composition
2017
This study investigated the factors associated with self-reported leisure-time physical activity excluding household activities (LTPAexHH) among women at risk for gestational diabetes (GDM), change in self-reported LTPA including household activities (LTPAinHH) from pre-pregnancy to 7-year follow-up as well as the influence of risk for GDM on their children’s physical activity (PA) and body composition. The association between maternal and child PA, and associations of PA with body composition and physical fitness in preschoolers were also studied. A sample of 399 pregnant women at risk for GDM was examined in a cohort study, and 199 mother-child dyads were assessed in cross-sectional and l…
Resting Energy Expenditure of Master Athletes: Accuracy of Predictive Equations and Primary Determinants
2021
Resting energy expenditure (REE) is determined mainly by fat-free mass (FFM). FFM depends also on daily physical activity. REE normally decreases with increased age due to decreases in FFM and physical activity. Measuring REE is essential for estimating total energy expenditure. As such, there are a number of different equations in use to predict REE. In recent years, an increasing number of older adults continue to participate in competitive sports creating the surge of master athletes. It is currently unclear if these equations developed primarily for the general population are also valid for highly active, older master athletes. Therefore, we tested the validity of six commonly-used equa…
Anthropometry and body composition of young soccer players
2022
Background: Body composition and other anthropometric measurements are important factors influencing the overall performance of an athlete. Together with motor coordination, physical fitness, physical, functional, and psychosocial conditions, as well as learned technique and tactics, a player's sports potential and probability of success can be determined. Aim of the study: Our study aimed to describe anthropometric variables and body composition of young soccer players of various ages. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 61 young soccer players in the under-15, under-16, and under-19 categories. We used a bioimpedance analyzer to measure the following indic…
Field-Based Health-Related Physical Fitness Tests in Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review
2021
Physical fitness (PF) is a multi-component construct and a biomarker of health. Worse PF is related to vulnerability and predicts worse academic achievements. Thus, assessing PF is important to monitor health in youth. This systematic review aimed to identify and inform physical education, health professionals and entities about existing PF batteries and field-tests that can be used in school settings. A comprehensive literature search was carried out in five electronic databases (Academic Search Complete, Education Resources Information Center, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) to identify PF battery protocols that can be carried out in the school setting. Overall, 24 PF batteries were i…
