Idiopathic infantile asymmetry, proposal of a measurement scale

Abstract To evaluate the development of idiopathic infantile asymmetry and the efficacy of therapeutic interventions, spinal scoliosis can be quantified on the basis of radiographs. For obvious reasons, use of this technique is limited. Here we present a clinical method to describe and quantify infantile asymmetry. For item selection, spontaneous movements (SMs), reactive movements (RMs) and length differences were video recorded in 30 infants (median age 10 weeks, range 6–16) with variable degrees of asymmetry. Moved through music: The effect of experienced emotions on performers’ movement characteristics

Do performers who feel sad move differently compared to those who express sadness? Although performers’ expressive movements have been widely studied, little is known about how performers’ experienced emotions affect such movements. To investigate this, we made 72 motion-capture recordings of eight violinists playing a melodic phrase in response to three different instructions. Three-dimensional Hall effect accelerometer for recording head movements of freely moving laboratory animals

A Hall effect device was constructed for a measurement of head movements in three spatial dimensions during classical conditioning experiments in cats. A Hall sensor was used to detect movements of a magnetic fragment floating in a small (15 x 15 mm) cube. The magnetic fragment was kept in the centre of the sealed cube with a thin coil spring which was filled with thin oil for damping excessive afteroscillations. A comparison of this device to a commercial accelerometer showed that the accuracy of the Hall device is sufficient for the movement recordings and that the device is sensitive also to slowly accelerating movements. The elastic body model: a pedagogical approach integrating real time measurements and modelling activities

In this paper, we describe a pedagogical approach to elastic body movement based on measurements of the contact times between a metallic rod and small bodies colliding with it and on modelling of the experimental results by using a microcomputer-based laboratory and simulation tools. The experiments and modelling activities have been built in the context of the laboratory of mechanical wave propagation of the two-year graduate teacher education programme of Palermo’s University. Some considerations about observed modifications in trainee teachers’ attitudes in utilizing experiments and modelling are discussed.

A neural network approach to movement pattern analysis.

Movements are time-dependent processes and so can be modelled by time-series of coordinates: E.g., each articulation has geometric coordinates; the set of the coordinates of the relevant articulations build a high-dimensional configuration. Simplified model of mean double step (MDS) in human body movement

In this paper we present a simplified and useful model of the human body movement based on the full gait cycle description, called the Mean Double Step (MDS). It enables the parameterization and simplification of the human movement. Furthermore it allows a description of the gait cycle by providing standardized estimators to transform the gait cycle into a periodical movement process. Playing with delayed auditory feedback

This paper presents a study where the effect of a delayed acoustic feedback is researched with 10 professional musicians performing four different pieces of piano music. The influence of a delayed auditory feedback on the performance is quantified using both MIDI information and the measurement of the movement of the upper body of the pianists. Four conditions were examined namely: a normal piano performance, a performance without acoustic feedback and two conditions with a delayed acoustic feedback of 300ms and 200ms respectively. The analysis of the MIDI data shows a significant increase in both the velocity of the keystrokes and the duration of the performance in the delayed conditions. …

A reanalysis of spinal motion during vibration

1987

Calibrated film of the motion of the lumbar spine during vibration was reanalysed, making use of a number of computer based techniques to improve accuracy and reduce measurement noise. The results demonstrated resonant behaviour at about 4 Hz and indicated that at vibration levels of the order of 1 m/s2 there exists bending of the order of 1° (peak to peak) between adjacent vertebrae in the lumbar spine. The bending is complex and involves phase differences along the spine and possibly a rocking motion of the pelvis.
