Introduction and objectives: Carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125) has been shown to be useful for risk stratification in patients admitted with acute heart failure (AHF). We sought to determine a CA125 cutpoint for identifying patients at low risk of 1-month death or the composite of death/HF readmission following admission for AHF.Methods: The derivation cohort included 3231 consecutive patients with AHF. CA125 cutoff values with 90% negative predictive value (NPV) and sensitivity up to 85% were identified. Pubertal maturation in girls treated for childhood acute leukaemia.

Eleven girlds treated during childhood for acute leukaemia were followed up during their pubertal development. At each examination weight, height, pubertal stage, FSH, LH, oestradiol, testosterone, androstenedione and dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate levels were evaluated. Clinical and endocrinological studies were performed according to age and pubertal stage and compared to those of healthy girls matched for age and pubertal stage. Results showed that pubertal maturation and gonadal function were not affected by oncotherapy; however menarche was attained earlier. Spinal metastases: Is stereotactic body radiation therapy supported by evidences?

Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) is becoming widely adopted in the treatment of primary and secondary tumors. Spinal bone metastases are frequently discovered in cancer patients, and in the past have been usually treated with a palliative goal. Nevertheless, in some particular clinical settings, such as oligometastatic patients and/or those with a long life expectancy, spinal SBRT could be considered a valid therapeutic option to obtain long-lasting palliation and, when possible, with a curative goal. This review aims to summarize available clinical and dosimetric data of published studies about spinal SBRT.

Gossypiboma is an inflammatory reaction to a foreign body, specifically composed of a cotton matrix left behind after surgery. The present study aims to present a case report of gossypiboma 23 years after a dental surgery and to make a literature review of the English language cases published on the issue. A 42-year-old woman was attended to evaluate complaints of pain on the right side of the maxilla. Body sensor networks (BSN) promise to enhance quality of life in common human habitats. The very next and natural step towards the improvement of the already valuable applications based on BSN is the incorporation of body actuator devices which adapt its actuation dynamically based on the information provided by the body sensors, thus forming Body Sensor and actuator Networks (BS&AN). This paper shows how BS&AN can be exploited to create an innovative system to support the treatment of patients affected by Parkinson’s Disease (PD). The combination of clinical and technological knowledge in BS&AN allows to significantly improve the quality of life of patients suffering from PD.

We here report a case involving a 21-year-old female, found dead in a central square of a city in the south of Italy. Initial evidences and circumstances were suggestive of a death associated with a sexual assault. Two peripheral blood and two vitreous humor samples were collected for the purpose of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) testing from the dead body at two different post-mortem intervals (PMIs): approximately 2 (t0) and 36 (t1) hours. The obtained results showed that, between t0 and t1, there was an increase of GHB concentrations in peripheral blood and vitreous humor of 66.3% and 8.1%, respectively.
