Shorter recovery time following high-intensity interval training induced higher body fat loss among overweight women

2018

Background: High intensity interval training (HIIT) has been widely employed as an exercise protocol to reduce fat, and also in addition, interval recovery periods are the most important factors which can have great impact on weight loss. Therefore, the aim of this study was the evaluation of different recovery time between HIIT program on metabolic responses and weight loss in overweight women. Methods: Twenty-four overweight (BMI 29.5±3.5 kg/m2) volunteer women were randomly assigned into three groups (n=8/group) to study the effects of different recovery times: (group 1; HIIT with 60/60 activity-rest ratio (sec), group 2; HIIT with 60/30 activity-rest ratio (sec), and group 3 was set as …

"El cuerpo de Giulia-no" de Jorge Eduardo Eielson: cuerpo fisico y cuerpo mental

2016

El cuerpo de Giulia-no de Jorge Eduardo Eielson is a discontinous and elusive text. Written in the 1950s but unpublished until 1971, it is an undoubtedly innovative work which thwarts the readersʼ expectations due to its fragmentary composition, elliptical tendencies, and the underlying dialogue amongst literature, visual arts and science running throughout the text. In this article, I analyse one element of the novel which expresses in an evident way the relationship between literature, theatre and visual arts: The body of its protagonist—Giulia— which is a physical and a mental body, according with the Buddhist vision of Eielson El cuerpo de Giulia-no es un texto discontinuo, indefinible.…

The Value of the Surface : Reappreciating Embodiment, Labor, and Necessity in Arendt's Political Thought

2021

Through an unorthodox reading of Hannah Arendt, this article argues that her political thought contains unacknowledged resources for conceptualizing embodiment in politics, and in relation to the economy, physical needs, and appearance. In contrast to the way she is typically read, this essay develops an affirmative account of embodiment in Arendt's work. Arendt not only recognizes the role of the appearing body in action but also underscores the importance of labor and necessity for a human sense of reality. Throughout her oeuvre, she presents a historical analysis of the rise of a functionalist, processual understanding of life under capitalist modernity. She also develops an alternative,…

Sexual segregation of Echinorhynchus borealis von Linstow, 1901 (Acanthocephala) in the gut of burbot (Lota lota Linnaeus)

2015

Helminths often occupy defined niches in the gut of their definitive hosts. In the dioecious acanthocephalans, adult males and females usually have similar gut distributions, but sexual site segregation has been reported in at least some species. We studied the intestinal distribution of the acanthocephalan Echinorhynchus borealis von Linstow, 1901 (syn. of E. cinctulus Porta, 1905) in its definitive host, burbot (Lota lota Linnaeus). Over 80% of female worms were found in the pyloric caeca, whereas the majority of males were in the anterior two-thirds of the intestine. This difference was relatively consistent between individual fish hosts. Worms from different parts of the gut did not dif…

It takes time to see the menu from the body: an experiment on stable isotope composition in freshwater crayfishes

2015

For many applications and ecological studies in which wild individuals are brought to laboratory it would be essential to know accurately how fast novel diet is reflected in composition of different tissues. To study the effects of two different diets on the stable isotope composition of freshwater crayfish muscle and hemolymph, we conducted a three month experiment on noble crayfish (Astacus astacus) and signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) by feeding them sweet corn (Zea mays) or Baltic herring (Clupea harengus membras) as novel food. During the experiment, the crayfish were given 0.4 g of selected food daily and the amount consumed was recorded. The samples for the stable isotope a…

Body Politics and Fat Shaming

2020

Fat shaming as a concept captures all the bias ingrained in cultural values, economic orders, and hegemonic ideals that stigmatize overweight or obese bodies. From a cultural perspective, media analysis of fat shaming allows us to address the body stratification that societies have produced, that is, what now is generally known as a somatic order. The entry analyzes the cultural effects of normalization and body politics.

Muon-capture strength functions in intermediate nuclei of 0νββ decays

2019

Capture rates of ordinary muon capture (OMC) to the intermediate nuclei of neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decays of current experimental interest are computed. The corresponding OMC (capture-rate) strength functions have been analyzed in terms of multipole decompositions. The computed low-energy OMC-rate distribution to 76 As is compared with the available data of Zinatulina et al. [Phys. Rev. C 99, 024327 (2019)]. The present OMC computations are performed using the Morita-Fujii formalism by extending the original formalism beyond the leading order. The participant nuclear wave functions are obtained in extended no-core single-particle model spaces using the spherical version of proton-ne…

Application of time-dependent many-body perturbation theory to excitation spectra of selected finite model systems

2016

In this thesis, an approximate method introduced to solve time-dependent many-body problems known as time-dependent many-body perturbation theory is studied. Many-body perturbation theory for interacting electrons and phonons is reviewed. In particular, the electron propagator G and an unconventional two-component phonon propagator, which satisfy coupled integral Dyson equations, are introduced. In practice, the associated integral kernels known as the electron Σ and phonon self-energies need to be approximated. The conserving approximations known as the Hartree (-Fock) and the first and second Born approximations, which respect the continuity equation between the electron density and curren…
