Wet Chemistry and Peptide Immobilization on Polytetrafluoroethylene for Improved Cell-adhesion

2016

Endowing materials surface with cell-adhesive properties is a common strategy in biomaterial research and tissue engineering. This is particularly interesting for already approved polymers that have a long standing use in medicine because these materials are well characterized and legal issues associated with the introduction of newly synthesized polymers may be avoided. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is one of the most frequently employed materials for the manufacturing of vascular grafts but the polymer lacks cell adhesion promoting features. Endothelialization, i.e., complete coverage of the grafts inner surface with a confluent layer of endothelial cells is regarded key to optimal perfo…

Variation of fundamental constants and 229Th

2017

The first excited state of the nucleus229Th has an exceptionally small excitation energy of7.8 eV, which is expected to be very sensitive to changes in the fine structure constant α.A small difference in the Coulomb energies of the two states, which both are of the order109eV, would amplify variations in α into large variations of the transition frequency.Hartree-Fock and Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations are performed to compute theCoulomb energies of the two states. The kinetic energies are also calculated which reflecta possible variation in the nucleon or quark masses or local Lorentz invariance violation. peerReviewed

Augsto purvu apsaimniekošana bioloģiskās daudzveidības saglabāšanai Latvijā

2013

Newly diagnosed depression is associated with increased beta-thromboglobulin levels and increased expression of platelet activation markers and plate…

2013

Abstract Background Inflammation plays a key role in atherosclerotic disease. Up until now only limited evidence exists on the mechanism of cardiovascular complications in patients with depression. In addition depression was also linked to an increase in cardiovascular mortality. The present study was designed to evaluate the extent of platelet activation and platelet-derived markers of atherosclerotic disease in patients with newly diagnosed depression. Methods This study used whole blood aggregometry, flow cytometry and ELISA to investigate platelet CD62P (P-selectin) expression and atherosclerotic markers (CD40, CD40L) as well as serum platelet factor 4 (PF-4) and beta-thromboglobulin (β…

Occurrence of Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis in Patients with Presumed Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension

2005

Purpose To report the rate of occurrence of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) in patients with presumed idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). Design Retrospective chart review. Participants All patients diagnosed with papilledema from November 1, 2002, through October 31, 2003, at 3 tertiary care neuro-ophthalmology centers. Methods Consecutive patients with a diagnosis of papilledema from 3 tertiary care neuro-ophthalmology centers were identified. Patients with space-occupying lesions, hydrocephalus, or meningitis were excluded. The remaining patients were evaluated with lumbar puncture, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and magnetic resonance venography (MRV). Main Outcome Me…
