Measurements and correlation of vapour–liquid equilibria of 2-butanone and hydrocarbons binary systems at two different pressures

2011

Abstract Consistent isobaric vapour–liquid equilibrium data have been measured for 2-butanone + n-hexane, 2-butanone + n-heptane, and 2-butanone + 2,2,4-trimethylpentane at two different pressures. All binary systems present a minimum boiling azeotrope at both pressures, and show that the azeotropic compositions are weakly dependent on pressure. The equilibrium data were correlated using the Wilson, NRTL, and UNIQUAC models for which the parameters are reported.

1981

Dynamic-mechanical and dielectric measurements have been performed with some polycarbonate samples. In one set of experiments care was taken to avoid any absorption of moisture. In other sets of experiments, samples were exposed to atmospheric humidity and to boiling water. The glass transition temperature was found to be highly affected by the absorption of water and by the test conditions.

Simultaneous determination of C1−C8 n-alkyl acetates and corresponding mono-, di- and trichloroacetates on glass capillary columns with programmed te…

1982

Gas chromatography of mixtures of aliphaticn-alkyl acetates (CH3−COOR), chloroacetates (CHCl2−COOR), dichloroacetates (CHCl2−COOR) and trichloroacetates (CCl3−COOR), where the alcohol chain length (R) varied between 1 and 8, has been studied on SE-30, Carbowax 20M and OV-351 glass capillary columns with programmed temperatures from 50°C at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10°C/min. Compounds in the homologous series are eluted in the direct order from methyl ton-octyl acetate. The isomeric chloro esters are eluted on SE-30 according to their boiling points in the order: mono-, di- and trichloro isomer, whereas on polar columns di- and trichloro esters are eluted in the reverse order. The complete separation …

Adsorption of chlorinated volatile organic compounds on hydrophobic faujasite: correlation between the thermodynamic and kinetic properties and the p…

1998

This work deals with a thermodynamic and kinetic study of the adsorption of single volatile organic compounds (VOCs) (dichloromethane (DCM), 1,2-dichloroethane (DCA), trichloroethene (TCE) and tetrachloroethene (PCE)) on a dealuminated faujasite Y by simultaneous measurements of the adsorbed amounts, adsorption heats and diffusivities. The type V isotherms and the weak values of derivative enthalpies allowed us to predict that the competitive adsorption of their mixture would be similar to a distillation. This prediction was verified experimentally: the breakthrough curves of VOC mixtures showed that the adsorbate with the higher boiling point displaced the adsorbate with the lower boiling …

Isobaric Vapor−Liquid Equilibrium for Ethanol + Water + Strontium Nitrate

1996

Isobaric vapor−liquid equilibrium for ethanol (1) + water (2) + potassium nitrate (3) at various concentrations of salt and with ethanol mole fractions from 0 to 0.642 has been measured at 100.0 kPa. The results were correlated by assuming that the salt was in ionic form and it was associated only with the water.

Isobaric vapor-liquid equilibria for binary systems composed of octane, decane, and dodecane at 20 kPa

1996

Vapor−liquid equilibria were measured for binary systems of octane + decane, decane + dodecane, and octane + dodecane at 20.00 kPa using a recirculating still. The results are thermodynamically consistent according to the point-to-point consistency test, and deviation from ideal behavior is small for all systems.

Carbohydrates in Jerusalem artichoke powder suspension

2007

Purpose – The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of temperature and action time on the extraction rate of carbohydrates of Jerusalem artichoke concentrate powder and inactivation of inulin during boiling and sterilization.Design/methodology/approach – Water suspension of Jerusalem artichoke concentrate (5g/100ml) at 25, 50 and 100○C was tested after 5, 15, 30 and 60min to determine the content of inulin, glucose, fructose and sucrose and evaluate the extraction rate. The stability of inulin was studied after boiling and sterilization at 120○C during 1, 2 and 3h. The extraction rate was evaluated by Fourier‐Transform Infrared (FT‐IR) spectroscopy as well.Findings – It was shown …

Target Cooling Options for Neutron Sources at High Power Densities

2014

Abstract Compact neutron sources in many cases beat large ones when it comes to power density; thus, many issues concerning cooling are shared, and each party can learn a lot from the other facilities. Starting from accrued experience with water cooling at moderate power densities in SINQ over the last 15 years, a brief overview will be attempted showing the relevant parameters and specific approaches at several existing and planned neutron (spallation) sources. Extensions from the established ground of cooling with water will be sketched in two directions. An outline of an experiment planned for freshly determining in a representative geometry the hard limit for water cooling, i.e. full bo…

First multi-GAS based characterisation of the Boiling Lake volcanic gas (Dominica, Lesser Antilles)

2013

We used a Multi-component Gas Analyser System (Multi-GAS) to measure, for the very first time, the composition (H2O, CO2, H2S, SO2) of the volcanic gas plume issuing from the Boiling Lake, a vigorously degassing, hot (T ~ 80-90°C) volcanic lake in Dominica, West Indies. The Multi-GAS captured in-plume concentrations of H2O, CO2 and H2S were well above those typical of ambient atmosphere, while no volcanic SO2 was detected (<0.05 ppm). These were used to derive the Boiling Lake plume characteristic ratios of CO2/H2S (5.2±0.4) and H2O/CO2 (31.4±6). Assuming that other volcanic gas species (e.g., HCl, CO, H2, N2, etc.) are absent in the plume, we recalculated a (air-free) composition fo…
