Ventastega curonica and the origin of tetrapod morphology.

2008

The gap in our understanding of the evolutionary transition from fish to tetrapod is beginning to close thanks to the discovery of new intermediate forms such as Tiktaalik roseae. Here we narrow it further by presenting the skull, exceptionally preserved braincase, shoulder girdle and partial pelvis of Ventastega curonica from the Late Devonian of Latvia, a transitional intermediate form between the 'elpistostegids' Panderichthys and Tiktaalik and the Devonian tetrapods (limbed vertebrates) Acanthostega and Ichthyostega. Ventastega is the most primitive Devonian tetrapod represented by extensive remains, and casts light on a part of the phylogeny otherwise only represented by fragmentary ta…

Biogenic Inorganic Polysilicates (Biosilica): Formation and Biomedical Applications

2013

The siliceous sponges, the demosponges and hexactinellid glass sponges, are unique in their ability to form biosilica structures with complex architectures through an enzyme-catalyzed mechanism. The biosilica skeleton of these sponges with its hierarchically structure and exceptional opto-mechanical properties has turned out to be an excellent model for the design of biomimetic nanomaterials with novel property combinations. In addition, biosilica shows morphogenetic activity that offers novel applications in the field of bone tissue engineering and repair. In recent years, much progress has been achieved towards the understanding of the principal enzymes, the silicateins that form the spon…

Bone regeneration in diabetic patients. A systematic review

2019

Background Oral bone regeneration techniques (OBRT) attempt to provide the appropriate bone volume and density to correctly accomplish dental implant treatments. The objective was to determine whether differences exist in the clinical outcomes of these techniques between diabetic and non-diabetic patients, considering the level of scientific evidence. Material and Methods A systematic review following PRISMA statements was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane databases with the search terms: “Diabetes Mellitus”, “guided bone regeneration”, “bone regeneration”, “alveolar ridge augmentation”, “ridge augmentation”, bone graft*, “sinus floor augmentation”, “sinus floor elevation”, “sinu…

Evaluation of Risk Parameters in Bone Regeneration Using a Customized Titanium Mesh

2019

PURPOSE The aim of the study was an evaluation of risk factors for an innovative bone regeneration technique using a customized titanium mesh that was tested in a clinical setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study included 65 patients with 70 grafting procedures of osseous defects of the jaws with a customized titanium mesh together with Advanced- and Injectable-Platelet-Rich Fibrin (A- and I-PRF), resorbable membranes, and bone grafting materials. Exposures of the meshes and grafting outcome were analyzed according to a novel classification as (a) punctual and (b) tooth width or complete exposure of the mesh (c). No exposure was stated as (d). RESULTS In 37% of cases, exposur…

Influence of the Use of a Collagen Membrane Placed on the Bone Window after Sinus Floor Augmentation—An Experimental Study in Rabbits

2021

Background: We studied the influence on healing of a resorbable membrane covering the osteotomy site after maxillary sinus grafting, evaluated in different regions of the augmented area. Methods: Maxillary sinus augmentation was performed in 24 New Zealand rabbits. Osteotomy, 4 × 6 mm, were performed bilaterally. A collagenated cortico-cancellous porcine bone was used to fill the elevated region. A collagen membrane was randomly placed over the osteotomy site on one side (MG), and the other side was left uncovered (NMG). The animals were euthanized after 2, 4, and 8 weeks
