Carbon storage in soils by ancient and modern wheat varieties

2022

Interactions in the network of Usher syndrome type 1 proteins

2004

International audience; Defects in myosin VIIa, harmonin (a PDZ domain protein), cadherin 23, protocadherin 15 and sans (a putative scaffolding protein), underlie five forms of Usher syndrome type I (USH1). Mouse mutants for all these proteins exhibit disorganization of their hair bundle, which is the mechanotransduction receptive structure of the inner ear sensory cells, the cochlear and vestibular hair cells. We have previously demonstrated that harmonin interacts with cadherin 23 and myosin VIIa. Here we address the extent of interactions between the five known USH1 proteins. We establish the previously suggested sans-harmonin interaction and find that sans also binds to myosin VIIa. We …

Zinc isotopes in Late Pleistocene fossil teeth from a Southeast Asian cave setting preserve paleodietary information

2020

Significance Dietary habits, especially meat consumption, represent a key aspect in the behavior and evolution of fossil hominin species. Here, we explore zinc (Zn) isotope ratios in tooth enamel of fossil mammals. We show discrimination between different trophic levels and demonstrate that Zn isotopes could prove useful in paleodietary studies of fossil hominin, or other mammalian species, to assess their consumption of animal versus plant resources. We also demonstrate the high preservation potential of pristine diet-related Zn isotope ratios, even under tropical conditions with poor collagen preservation, such as the studied depositional context in Southeast Asia. However, assessing the …

Handcrafting in archaeomusicological research

2016

There were no conference proceedings but you may find video recordings of some of the talks by following the link above; International audience; Archaeological flutes, as sound artefacts, both stand in material and immaterial culture. They are made of tremendous subtleties that archaeologists have a hard time to understand while these are craftsmen's everyday life. These subtleties are the link between material (rough material, tools, gestures) and immaterial (sounds, music, timber, uses) issues. They are the reason why archaeology cannot study ancient sound instruments on its own. A one-year insight experience of apprenticeship alongside a traditional-flute-maker (Jean-Daniel Talma, ElBock…

La fosse 264 du Néolithique récent de Vignely « La Noue Fénard » (Seine-et-Marne)

2014

A pit dating to the Recent Neolithic was discovered at Vignely, la Noue-Fenard during work on a Middle Neolithicenclosure that backed on to an ancient bank of the river Marne. The cylindrical structure, the primary function of which has not yetbeen determined, was used as a refuse pit and contained a particularly rich collection of finds, notably wild animal bones, stoneobjects, bone tools, grinding tools and pottery. The study of the finds has revealed activities directly relating to game hunting, exploiting animal resources for meat, bone, fur, … The objects show marked regional affinities with the collective tomb of Vignely,la Porte-aux-Bergers and the Isles-lès-Meldeuses ensemble. They a…

Many practical tasks in industry, such as automatic inspection or robot vision, often require scanning of three-dimensional shapes with non-contact techniques. However, transparent objects, such as those made of glass, still pose difficulties for classical scanning techniques. The reconstruction of surface geometry for transparent objects is complicated by the fact that light is transmitted through, refracted and in some cases reflected by the surface. Current approaches can only deal relatively well with sub-classes of objects. The algorithms are still very specific and not generally applicable. Furthermore, many techniques require considerable acquisition effort and careful calibration. T…
