Double-application of platelet-rich plasma on bone healing in rabbits

2010

Objective: Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is considered to enhance bone formation especially at early stages of wound healing, depending on the limited and short life-span of platelets and growth factors. The aim of this study was to evaluate efficacy of double-application of PRP (DA-PRP) on bone healing in a rabbit calvarial defect model. Study design: Twenty-eight rabbits, each had two surgically prepared calvarial bone defects (10mm diameter), were included in this study and randomly divided into six groups. Defects (n=56) were treated with single-application of PRP (SA-PRP)(n=10), SA-PRP and beta-tricalciumphosphate (SA-PRP+TCP)(n=10), DA-PRP (n=8), DA-PRP and beta-tricalciumphosphate (DA-P…

Procollagen C-proteinase Enhancer Stimulates Procollagen Processing by Binding to the C-propeptide Region Only*

2011

Background: Procollagen C-proteinase enhancer-1 (PCPE-1) is an extracellular glycoprotein that increases activity of certain zinc metalloproteinases involved in tissue development and repair. Results: PCPE-1 binds uniquely to the C-propeptide region of the procollagen molecule. Conclusion: PCPE-1 enhances proteolysis by binding solely to the procollagen C-propeptides. Significance: These data may lead to future applications in the development of antifibrotic therapies.

Solvent-dependent hypsochromic shift in the imidazole based complex [Cu(µ2-SO4)(Im)4] and ameliorative effects on breast cancer-induced bone metastas…

2023

A sulfate-bridged complex [Cu(µ2-SO4)(Im)4] (1) was prepared and structurally characterized, where Im: imidazole. The X-ray structure analysis reveals that 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic system with space group C2/c. The octahedral coordination around the metal center is made up of four distinct imine nitrogen atoms in the equatorial plane, and two sulfate oxygen atoms occupying the axial sites. The covalent linkage between metals via the sulfate group, forming infinite 1D zigzag chains, ensures the entanglement of the structure. These chains, in turn, are further assembled into a 2D network through N-H...O hydrogen bonding. Thermal analyses underline the high thermal stability of our com…

Relapse risk after autologous transplantation in patients with newly diagnosed myeloma is not related with infused tumor cell load and the outcome is…

2006

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) multicentre randomized phase III study was designed to assess the safety and efficacy of CD34+ selection in newly diagnosed myeloma patients undergoing autologous transplantation. DESIGN AND METHODS: One hundred and eleven patients responsive to initial chemotherapy were randomized to receive CD34+ selected (arm A) or unselected PBPC (arm B) after conditioning with high-dose melphalan and TBI. ASO-PCR was used to assess purging efficacy and reinfused tumor load. Tumor load could be assessed in 59 patients. RESULTS: CD34+ selection gave a median tumor cell depletion of 2.2 logs (0.77-5.96). No tumor ce…

Community-based method for extracting backbones

2022

Networks are an adequate representation for modeling and analyzing a great variety of complex systems. However, understanding networks with millions of nodes and billions of connections can be pretty challenging due to memory and time constraints. Therefore, selecting the relevant nodes and edges of these large-scale networks while preserving their core information is a major issue. In most cases, the so-called backbone extraction methods are based either on coarse-graining or filtering approaches. Coarse-graining techniques reduce the network size by gathering similar nodes into super-nodes, while filter-based methods eliminate nodes or edges according to a statistical property. In this wo…

Histological characteristics of the vertebral intercentra of Metoposaurus diagnosticus (Temnospondyli) from the Upper Triassic of Krasiejów (Upper Si…

2012

ABSTRACTOsteohistological characteristics of the large temnospondyl amphibian Metoposaurus diagnosticus from the Upper Triassic of Poland (Krasiejów locality) were determined using vertebral intercentra thin-sections from different regions and growth stages. The intercentra showed a trabecular structure in both the endochondral and periosteal domains. Endochondral ossification developed first, and the primary bone occurs near the periphery with a higher degree of remodelling in the centre. Periosteal bone deposition begins later; first on the ventral side, continuing laterally and finally onto the dorsal side. Periosteal growth rate was initially very rapid, and then subsequently decreased …

Relationships between helminth communities and host traits inPodarcis bocageiandPodarcis carbonellifrom NW Portugal

2006

A parasitological survey was carried out to determine the relationships between helminth fauna and some biological traits of two host species of lacertid lizards. Size, sex, diet, and season of collection, as well as infracommunities and component communities of Podarcis bocagei and P. carbonelli from Douro litoral (northwest Portugal), have been analysed. In both host species, we found low values of parasite infection parameters and diversity. These findings were in accordance with their feeding habits, eating only animal prey and no plant matter. Evidences suggest a relationship between the presence of Brachylaima sp (Trematoda: Brachylaimidae) and the ingestion of snails by both lizard s…

Long bone histology of Metoposaurus diagnosticus (Temnospondyli) from the Late Triassic of Krasiejów (Poland) and its paleobiological implications

2013

ABSTRACT Long bones of the temnospondyl Metoposaurus diagnosticus krasiejowensis from the Late Triassic of Krasiejow, Poland, were studied using histological analysis. Six femora, three humeri, a radius, and an ulna were prepared for thin-sectioning. In all bones, the dominant type of primary bone matrix is parallel-fibered bone with secondary, or rarely primary, deposition of lamellar bone inside vascular canals. Two small humeri and the smallest femur showed incipient fibrolamellar bone, which may be a character typical for juvenile individuals. The medullary region is filled with well-developed trabecular bone. The growth marks in all bones are organized as thick layers of highly vascula…
