Anterior fusion for cervical spondylosis

1978

Anterior fusion was performed on 138 patients as treatment for degenerative changes of the cervical vertebral column. The results were checked after up to 11 years in 122 patients and were found to be good in 55%, fair in 3895% and poor in 6.5%. There were complications of phonetic paralysis in one case, Horner syndrome in two cases, 2 wound infections, and complaints about the iliac crest in 3 patients. Kyphosis at the fused segment occurred 26.1% of cases, the average angle being 15.3 degrees, but it did not influence the clinical results. Mortality was 2%. Inadequate visualization of the nerve roots at operation was probably the reason for the segmental deficits and suggestions were made…

Vascular modifications within a choroidal osteoma

1993

We report a case of choroidal osteoma followed-up for 7 years. During this lapse of time the choroidal osteoma showed slight enlargement, development of subretinal hemorrhage and modifications of intratumoral vascularization. Some large intratumoral vessels visible at first examination disappeared at follow-up, while other vessels not observed before developed. The changes in the vascularization of the choroidal osteoma denote profound dynamics in the processes of osseous rearrangement of the tumor.

Thymoma and pure red cell aplasia in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus.

1995

We present the case of a female patient with a diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) at the age of 54 years. At the age of 63 years, she suffered from malignant thymoma and 3 years after removal of the thymoma a diagnosis of pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) was established. This is, to our knowledge, the first report of the occurrence of SLE, thymoma and PRCA in the same patient. The case is discussed with regard to the already known associations between these diseases.

Influence of nerve branch of origin and extracanalicular extension of the tumor on hearing after middle fossa removal of vestibular schwannoma

2007

Neither nerve branch of origin nor extracanalicular (up to 1 cm) extension of a vestibular schwannoma (VS) influence the postoperative hearing outcome in patients operated via a middle cranial fossa (MCF) approach. To test whether the nerve branch of tumor origin and an extracanalicular, up to 1 cm, tumor extension influences hearing outcome after MCF VS surgery. This was a retrospective case review of 50 patients with postoperative pure-tone audiogram (PTA) performed later than 90 days after surgery. Twenty patients had a superior vestibular nerve (SVN) tumor and 27 patients had an inferior vestibular nerve (IVN) tumor. In three patients the nerve branch of origin of the VS could not be uneq…

Comparison of the effect of ginger and aloe vera mouthwashes on xerostomia in patients with type 2 diabetes: A clinical trial, triple-blind

2021

Background Ginger and aloe vera are two medicinal herbs mostly used to produce mouthwash. This study aimed to compare the effects of ginger and aloe vera mouthwashes on the xerostomia in patients referred to Bandar Abbas diabetes clinic (Iran). Material and Methods In this triple-blind clinical trial, three groups (n=35 patients in each group) were studied. One group was given aloe vera mouthwash, the other group used ginger mouthwash, and the control group was only given normal saline. All the mouthwashes were used 20 ccs three times daily for 14 consecutive days. The symptoms and severity of xerostomia were measured before and after the intervention by the questionnaire proposed by Fox et…

Efficacy of eminectomy in the treatment of prolonged mandibular dislocation

2009

Surgery of the temporomandibular joint is indicated for different clinical situations, including internal derangements, hipomobility, hipermobility, pathology and trauma. Mandibular dislocation is an acute painful condition that causes severe functional limitation. Manual reduction, with or without pharmacological assistance, is the treatment of choice and should be performed as early as possible. On rare situations mandibular dislocation may not be perceived by the patient and remain undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for a long period. This may include severe illness, neurological diseases and prolonged intensive care hospitalization with oral intubation and sedation. Treatment of prolonged mand…

Postrenal anuria in pelvic or acetabular injury: a report of three cases.

1996

Renal failure due to obstruction by a retroperitoneal hematoma is a rarely discussed complication in pelvic or acetabular fractures. Three cases of this obstructive uropathy are presented. They were successfully treated with removal of the hematoma and draining of the retroperitoneal space.

A comprehensive classification of craniofacial fractures: postmortem and clinical studies with two- and three-dimensional computed tomography.

2002

Abstract A comprehensive classification of midfacial/craniofacial fractures, based on two- and three-dimensional computed tomography (2D and 3D-CT) is presented. We performed a postmortem analysis of 24 patients who had died from trauma with signs of craniofacial fractures, based on 2D and 3D-CT studies with pathoanatomical findings. In addition, CT findings for 100 patients with craniofacial injuries requiring an emergency CT were correlated with surgical findings and follow-up results. On the basis of the analysis of a total of 377 fractures a classification system is proposed. The system is based on the use of the AO/ASIF (Arbeitsgemeinschaft fur Osteosynthesefragen/Association for the S…

Clinical and radiographic performance of self‐locking conical connection implants in the posterior mandible: Five‐year results of a two‐centre prospe…

2021

Abstract Objective This prospective study aims to assess the 5‐year clinical performance of implants with internal conical connection and platform‐switched abutments in the posterior mandible. Material and Methods Healthy adults missing at least two teeth in the posterior mandible and with a natural tooth mesial to the implant site received two or three adjacent implants. After a transmucosal healing period single crown restorations were cemented on platform‐switched abutments. Changes in marginal bone levels were investigated in standardized periapical radiographs from surgery and loading (baseline) to 60‐months post‐loading. Results Twenty‐four patients received 52 implants. Bone remodell…

Non-invasive joint decompression : an important factor in the regeneration of the bone marrow and disc recapture in temporomandibular arthropathies

2018

Background This article aims to demonstrate the importance of the TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) decompression in the treatment of degenerative processes and disc displacements, reporting two clinical cases treated with orthopedic and decompressive correction of TMJ. Material and Methods The studies reported in this article show patients with muscle and joint pain who were evaluated pre and post-treatment through MRI (Magnetic Resonance Irradiation) to follow-up bone marrow regeneration and TMJ disc placement. Transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TENS), measurement equipment and IO (Intraoral Orthotic) were used to evaluate and treat the patients. A critical review of literature has also b…
