Reminiscing in white in Fae Myenne Ng's Bone
2018
The article focuses on the representation of whiteness in Fae Myenne Ng’s Bone (1993), in particular on how the aesthetic and the socio-historical strata of the novel intersect, how by saturating the imagery of Bone with whiteness, Ng conveys the first person Chinese American narrator’s positionality and the positionality of other Chinese American characters as members of the Chinese American community and members of broader American society. The images involving whiteness compose a kind of the palimpsest overwritten with personal and communal ethnic watermarks as well as repressed, surfacing and semi-articulated history of Leila’s family that she channels into the narrative, having engaged…

Collagen overglycosylation: a biochemical feature that may contribute to bone quality.
2005
Skeletal ability to resist mechanical stress is determined by bone amount and quality, which relies on macro- and micro-architecture, turnover, bone matrix, and mineralisation; the role of collagen has not been clearly elucidated. Numerous post-translational steps are involved in collagen type I biosynthesis, including residue hydroxylation and glycosylation catalysed by enzymes that work until the protein folds forming the triple helix; therefore, folding rate regulates these processes. Overglycosylated hydroxylysines are poor substrates for epsilon-amino group deamination which initiates cross-link formation. Three clinical conditions associated with fractures may relate collagen overglyc…
Effective conjugation in conjugated polymers with strongly twisted backbones: A case study on fluorinated MEHPPV
2016
Conjugated polymers with strongly twisted backbones, such as MEHPPV with fluorinated vinylene units (F-MEHPPV), demand a redefinition of the all-important ‘effective conjugation length’ ECL, which we extract here by a facile graphical method. In MEHPPV (being essentially planar), the ECL coincides with the ‘maximum conducive chain length’ MCC and extends over about n ≈ 9 repetition units (RU). In F-MEHPPV, the MCC is similarly long with n ≈ 8, but the ECL localizes on just one RU. The strong twist in F-MEHPPV persists in the excited state, broadening the emission spectrum and quenching the fluorescence with reduced radiative and enhanced non-radiative rates.
Zebrafish Fins as a Model System for Skeletal Human Studies
2007
Recent studies on the morphogenesis of the fins ofDanio rerio(zebrafish) during development and regeneration suggest that a number of inductive signals involved in the process are similar to some of those that affect bone and cartilage differentiation in mammals and humans. Akimenko et al. (2002) has shown that bone morphogenetic protein-2b (BMP2b) is involved in the induction of dermal bone differentiation during fin regeneration. Many other groups have also shown that molecules from the transforming growth factor-beta superfamily (TGFβ), including BMP2, are effective in promoting chondrogenesis and osteogenesisin vivoin higher vertebrates, including humans. In the present study, we review…
Langer-Giedion syndrome with interstitial 8q-deletion.
1982
We describe a 12-year-old girl with Langer-Giedion syndrome (tricho-rhino-phalangeal syndrome type II) who also had vertebral malformations. Chromosome analysis identified an interstitial del(8q): 46,XX,del(8)(pter leads to q22::q234 leads to qter) as a cause of this syndrome.
The C-ORAL-BRASIL project for Brazilian Portuguese spoken corpora
2020
