The Challenges of the Schengen Area

2016

After focusing on the Euro crisis, European leaders are now struggling with the biggest migrant crisis since Second World War. Up to now, over 1.1 million migrants have requested protection in Europe, and their number is growing every day. The functioning of the Schengen area is in danger due to control deficiencies at external borders. As it’s facing this challenge, the EU is constantly seeking solutions designed to restore the proper functioning of the system and prevent its collapse.

Borderline Personality in Patients with Poly-Diagnoses Treated for a Bipolar Disorder

2019

Some patients with dysphoria, explosive behaviour, or suicidal ideation, may receive a diagnosis of, and treatment for Bipolar Disorder (BD) and, not infrequently. The coexistence of these two diagnoses has been explained in different ways. Some authors include the BPD in the bipolar spectrum; others are sceptical about the existence of real comorbidity, suggesting a misdiagnosis. This study aimed to assess the personality of this group of poly-diagnosed patients (PolyD) and hypothesised they had a pathological borderline organisation. Via the administration of the Schedler Westen Assessment Procedure (SWAP-200), we compared PolyD patients with those suffering from BPD or BD only. We perfor…

Corporate storytelling and the idea of Latin America

2021

The aim of this article is contributing to a great variety of theoretical perspectives and empirical settings to generate cumulative evidence about the influence of historical legacies and organisational ability for managing the past. In a continuation of critical perspectives that challenges the dominance of Anglo-Saxon onto-epistemologies in management and organisation studies (MOS), we conducted an empirical study on a multinational airline company whose past successes depended on the North/South, Anglo/Latin American borderlands. We analysed the grand narratives of Pan American Airways' (PAA) corporate archival material to determine its dominant discourses about people from Latin Americ…

An Analysis of a Single Case of Comorbidity between Learning Disability and Borderline Intellectual Functioning

2012

Abstract In this study we explored a case of comorbidity between DSA and Borderline Intellectual Functioning. The girl was fourteen years old, ninth grade of school in Palermo, with significant learning difficulties. Two interviews were conducted, one with parents and one with teachers, to investigate the history of the girl's learning. In the pre-test phase the following cognitive areas were investigated: Q.I. (Level of Intelligence), decoding ability, reading comprehension and writing skills. Motivational-emotional profile was also evaluated: school motivation, self-handicapping strategies, self esteem and school anxiety. To assess these cognitive areas we used: Reading Comprehension Test…

Multi-destination trips: A survey on incoming zourism in Sicily

2012

Many pleasure trips are often characterized by the visit of more than a single destination. Despite the topic is well documented in literature, the empirical studies are limited to a few pioneering studies. This lack may be attributable to the failure of tourism organizations to collect data on multi-destination trip behaviors, as it results, for example, from the system of European statistics on tourism (according to the Council Directive 95/57 EC), where no information on the average number of destinations visited within a single trip are provided. This paper aims to analyze the main implications of multi-destination trips both on tourism statistics and in tourism planning, and to describ…

The prevalence and predictors of bipolar and borderline personality disorders comorbidity: Systematic review and meta-analysis

2016

Introduction Data about the prevalence of borderline personality (BPD) and bipolar (BD) disorders comorbidity are scarce and the boundaries remain controversial. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis investigating the prevalence of BPD in BD and BD in people with BPD. Methods Two independent authors searched MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO and the Cochrane Library from inception till November 4, 2015. Articles reporting the prevalence of BPD and BD were included. A random effects meta-analysis and meta-regression were conducted. Results Overall, 42 papers were included: 28 considering BPD in BD and 14 considering BD in BPD. The trim and fill adjusted analysis demonstrated the prevale…

Bndocrinopathic Constitutions and Pathology of War*

1919

The clinical study of the internal secretions opens a vast field of research, so far little known, notwithstanding its great value in practical medicine. Particularly important are those states of hormonic imbalance which are at the border line between health and disease, and which represent either latent or mild endocrinopathic conditions, real endocrine diatheses or endocrinopathic temperaments. It is already understood that for each of the best known endocrine glands, in addition to frank malfunctions there must be recognized minor degrees of perturbation giving rise to the endocrinopathic habitus. To the French writers, especially Levi and Rotschild, we owe much of our knowledge of the …

Systematic review of psychotherapeutic treatments for “minor” personality disorders

2011

IntroductionAmong personality disorders (PDs), antisocial and borderline personality disorder are well-studied. However, the remaining PDs (in the following called “minor PDs”) pose major problems in everyday-health care settings. People affected often present with additional axis-l disorders such as substance-related, mood or anxiety disorders, and are among those most difficult to treat.ObjectivesTo systematically review the current evidence of psychotherapeutic treatments for “minor” personality disordersMethodsIn the context of Cochrane Collaboration reviews for Cluster A, B and C PDs, exhaustive literature searches were done to identify the current RCT evidence for PD treatments. The e…

The Suicidal State between “the Wish to Die” and “an Urge to Die”

2015

Abstract From the standpoint of existential analysis, the present article compares the psycho-dynamics of the suicidal states examined hereby, where the first case is diagnosed as a “Major depressive episode. Borderline personality disorder” and the second case as “Severe major depressive episode, with psychotic elements”. In the first case, the suicidal state was based on the association between the second motivation (“to enjoy life”) and the third motivation (“to be myself”), and the suicidal act was a “false” one. In the second case, the suicidal state resulted from the second motivation (“to enjoy life”) and the first motivation (“being able to be”), and it was a “real” suicidal act.

Association analysis between gene variants of the tyrosine hydroxylase and the serotonin transporter in borderline personality disorder.

2010

For patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD), we previously reported an independent effect of the catechol-o-methyl-transferase (COMT) low-activity (Met(158)) allele and an interaction with the low-expression allele of the deletion/insertion (short/long or S/L, resp.) polymorphism in the serotonin transporter-linked promoter region (5-HTTLPR). The purpose of the present study was to extend these findings to the tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) Val(81)Met single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), the 5-HTTLPR S/L polymorphism incorporating the recently described functional A/G SNP within the long allele of the 5-HTTLPR (rs25531) as well as the variable number of tandem repeat (VNTR) polymorp…
