Insights on desiccation tolerance of the lichen photobiont trebouxia sp. pl. in both thalline and isolated ones

2009

The study of desiccation tolerance of lichens, and of their phycobionts in particular, has been mainly focused on the antioxidant system that protects the cell against photo-oxidative stress produced during dehydration and rehydration. However, desiccation tolerance cannot be achieved in lichen phycobionts with antioxidant activity alone. The main objective of the thesis was to expand the knowledge of the poorly understood desiccation tolerant mechanisms. The first chapter presents an introduction to the subject of the thesis, based on the available background information, and explains the rationale of the thesis. The aim of the chapter 2 was to establish the optimal growing conditions for …

The Origins of Millet Cultivation (Panicum miliaceum and Setaria italica) along Iberia’s Mediterranean Area from the 13th to the 2nd Century BC

2023

The introduction of the cultivation of millets (Panicum miliaceum and Setaria italica) along Iberia’s Mediterranean zone appears to stem from different origins which themselves hinged on their own specific historical developments. The earliest traces in the northeast, presumably of trans-Pyrenean origin, were brought to light in Bronze Age contexts (13th century BC) in Western Catalonia, notably in the Cinca River Valley. The different species of millets from southern and eastern Iberia, by contrast, come from later 10th–8th century BC contexts under Phoenician influence. Their expansion can be linked to the cultivation of fruit trees (vineyards and others) throughout the 9th–7th centuries …

Remarks on the type material of Linaria cavanillesii Chav. (Antirrhineae, Veronicaceae)

2013

ABSTRACT Some aspects concerning the type material of Linaria cavanillesii Chav. (Antirrhineae, Veronicaceae), which are conserved in different herbaria, are discussed. This name had previously been lectotypified on Tournefort's collections that are kept at the herbarium P, though they had been regarded erroneously as syntypes. Evidence is shown on the existence of a duplicate of the lectotype (isolectotype), which is conserved among the Salvador herbarium at BC (Institut Botanic de Barcelona), as well as of syntypes deposited in MA on which the illustration by Cavanilles cited in the protologue was drawn. Historical data are reported on collection sites and dates for all cited syntypes of …

Lichen rehydration in heavy metal polluted environments: Pb modulates the oxidative response of both Ramalina farinacea thalli and its isolated micro…

2014

Lichens are adapted to desiccation/rehydration and accumulate heavy metals, which induce ROS especially from the photobiont photosynthetic pigments. Although their mechanisms of abiotic stress tolerance are still to be unravelled, they seem related to symbionts' reciprocal upregulation of antioxidant systems. With the aim to study the effect of Pb on oxidative status during rehydration, the kinetics of intracellular ROS, lipid peroxidation and chlorophyll autofluorescence of whole Ramalina farinacea thalli and its isolated microalgae (Trebouxia TR1 and T. TR9) was recorded. A genetic characterization of the microalgae present in the thalli used was also carried out in order to assess possib…

On the circumscription and taxonomic status of Centaurea caballeroi (Compositae)

2012

Data are reported on …
