CONSERVATION STATUS ASSESSMENT OF THE ENDEMIC HIERACIUM S. STR. (ASTERACEAE) OCCURRING IN SICILY

2022

The current status of the majority of apomictic taxa, and therefore their priorities for conservation, are poorly known, and consequently, they are neglected by conservationists. In Sicily 8 species and 4 subspecies of Hieracium s. str. occurs. Eleven taxa are endemic to the area, one has a wider distribution. These taxa were not evaluated within the recent project “Red List assessment of plants and fungi in Italy” because collectively considered with insufficient and unreliable distribution data. The global conservation status of the endemic Hieracium s. str. taxa occurring in Sicily was assessed here using the IUCN categories and criteria, on the basis of the data collected during field s…

Agricoltura di qualità e rete natura 2000: “laboratori” del cambiamento

2011

Through the centuries, rural communities have managed their environment creating a rich landscape diversity. This represents an historical heritage both for the region and for humanity because the "world" itself represents the sum of widespread fragmentation processes following specific laws. The intense socio-economic changes of the last century, the rise of the "global" markets, in particular, have radically changed the landscape configuration and its natural quality across Europe. Natura 2000 network and the network of protected areas are currently the "open laboratories" to test a model of development that is compatible with the priceless treasure such as: species, habitats, landscape a…

Study of the alien flora of the urban area of Palermo (Sicily)

2016

Alien plants are an integral part of the Mediterranean agricultural and urban landscape. Taking into account that man is an active voluntary or involuntary carrier of plant diasporas, cities and areas where human activity is predominant represent preferential targets for the study of new plant introductions. In addition, some species as Pennisetum setaceum (Forssk.) Chiov. and Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill., initially exclusive to high disturbed habitats, succeeded in penetrating in cliffs, degraded maquis and garrigues characterizing them. Thus the importance of studying these areas to predict future colonization of more natural habitats. Starting from literature and integrating it with f…

Floristic, phenological and chorological differences in the annual vegetation of Sardinia.

2007

The therophytic flora of Sardinia has been split into four main groups, basing on the ecologic requirements of species. The following groups have been recognized: flora of dry entisoils, flora of periodically swampy or submerged entisoils, flora of coastal sites, flora of fields, road edges and human settlements. Either, most frequent or exclusive species were ascribed to each group. A species was considered “exclusive” when its relative frequency outside a given group was estimated ≤10%. Differences have been highlighted within the groups, dealing with chorology, growth form, flowering time, colour of flowers, pollination and seed dispersal strategies.

Discovery of plants and fungi with antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes

2016

Acne vulgaris is a common skin disorder that affects >85% of teenagers. Propionibacterium acnes is implicated in its pathogenesis, and like many other bacteria, is subject to emerging trends in antibiotic resistance. Novel therapies are in high demand. The aim of this study was to identify new leads for future pre-clinical development from herbal skin remedies used in Italy. We screened a unique natural product library composed of extracts from medicinal and randomly collected plants and fungi from the Mediterranean for growth-inhibitory and anti-biofilm activity in P. acnes. Evaluation of 157 extracts from 10 fungi and 58 plants led to the identification of crude extracts from seven specie…

Equilibrium/steady-state concept in phytoplankton ecology

2003

This paper summarises the outcomes of the 13th Workshop of the International Association of Phytoplankton Taxonomy and Ecology (IAP). The authors mostly addressed their contributions on the following topics: the effect of trophic state on the attainment of a steady-state; the establishment of equilibria in deep and shallow lakes; the role of spatial heterogeneity, disturbance, and stress in the establishment of equilibrium assemblages; the mechanisms leading to the steady state; the frequency and longevity of equilibrium phases, and the role of morphological and physiological plasticity of phytoplankton in maintaining the (apparently) same populations under different environmental condition…

CARATTERIZZAZIONE MOLECOLARE DI BATTERI IN REPERTI LIGNEI SOMMERSI

2013

The focus of this study was the identification of bacterial colonies in waterlogged wood fragments from the rostrum of a excellent workmanship, that is very likely one of the wrecks attributed to Sextus Pompey fleet (36 BC) and discovered in Acqualadroni, Messina, Sicily, Italy (2008). The wood samples were analyzed by light and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), in vitro culture and molecular technique (DNA base techniques). The results, focused on bacterial consortia, allowed us to reveal the presence of Pseudomonas sp., Sphingomonas sp., Xanthomonas sp. besides Marinobacter sp. and Desulforudis audaxviator. A prompt and accurate characterization of bacterial colonization represents one …

Microscopy and Molecular biology techniques for the study biocenosis diversity in semi-confined environments

2010

This study is part of a wider conservation project of artistic and anthropological finds located in the Grotto of the Saints (Licodia Eubea, Alia, Sicily), and represents an opportunity for investigating the micro-and macro biological systems colonizing this particular environment. It is well-known that the bio-receptivity of surfaces is strongly related to its constituent materials and environmental parameters, whose effects promote the establishment of specific biotic communities. This is particularly true for caves, hypogea and semi-confined environments and, in particular for the Grotto of the Saints, where besides the presence of different nutrient sources, there are also high humidity…
