Hydrophytic vegetation aspects in the Nebrodi mountains (Sicily)
2009
The vegetation of damp areas in the Nebrodi Natural Park was already surveyed in some studies (Brullo et al. 1994). In particular, the various hygro and hydrophytic aspects were referred to associations belonging to the Phragmitetea and the Potamogetonetea classes respectively. Small lacustrine habitats in Sicily have disappeared almost everywhere and are conserved still today only in the Nebrodi Mountains. They host widely distributed hydrophytes. Some of these plants are rather localized in Sicily, e.g. Potamogeton polygonifolius Pourr. and Utricularia australis R. Br. The latter occurs also in the Madonie Mountains. Recent analyses revealed some hollows characterized by an accentuated re…
Specie mediterranee di interesse etnobotanico in Sicilia
2010
Tramite interviste a…
The Prairie Diagnosis: a tool to assess and characterize the grassland base of long-term temporary and permanent grasslands
2022
Permanent and temporary grasslands represent nearly 44 % of the French UAA. This vast area is rich in a very wide range of flora, from hillside meadows with subterranean clover to flooded meadows and marshes with Baldingere, not forgetting sown meadows which, over the years, can host numerous spontaneous species. The method of prairie diagnosis is based on a botanical approach to the prairie with the objective of qualifying the forage aptitudes of the cover. The diagnosis of a meadow is only of interest and relevance if it is integrated into a forage system consistent with the strategies of a farmer. It is based on the premise that the flora of a meadow is the result of the interaction of "…
Air Quality Assessment by the Determination of Trace Elements in Lichens (Xanthoria calcicola) in an Industrial Area (Sicily, Italy)
2022
This study provides data on variation in the content of metals and metalloids measured in the lichens (Xanthoria calcicola Oxner) collected in the Syracusan petrochemical complex (Sicily, Italy) which is considered one of the largest in Europe. Concentrations of eighteen trace elements measured in the lichens that were collected from 49 different points were analyzed using an inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS) device. The concentrations of the typical elements of industrial emissions (As, Cr, Ni, and V) highlight the environmental criticality that exists in the study area. The interpretation of the data in terms of multi-element statistical analysis (FA) and enrichment factor (EFs) proved …
Aquatic Macrophytes Occurrence in Mediterranean Farm Ponds: Preliminary Investigations in North-Western Sicily (Italy)
2021
Mediterranean wetlands are severely affected by habitat degradation and related loss of biodiversity. In this scenario, the wide number of artificial farm ponds can play a significant role in the biodiversity conservation of aquatic flora. In the present contribution we show the preliminary results of a study on Mediterranean farm ponds of north-western Sicily (Italy), aimed to investigating the environmental factors linked to the occurrence of submerged macrophytes (vascular plants and charophytes). We studied the aquatic flora of 30 ponds and determined the chemical and isotopic composition of their water bodies on a subset of the most representative 10 sites. Results show that (1) farm p…
""Flora Italiana Digitale": an interactive identification tool for the Flora of Italy
2010
The digital facilities of the second edition of Pignatti's "Flora d'Italia" are presented. A software, called FID (i.e. "Flora Italiana Digitale") will link together a random-access interactive identification tool, a thesaurus, synoptic tables and one template for each single species, including a distribution map (referred to the Italian regions), "ecograms", a text-box and up to 24 high-resolution colour images. The FID follows a "shareware phylosophy". All contents and images can be integrated and/or replaced over time, in order to continuously improve the diagnostic and qualitative performance of the utilities provided. Ideally, the community of users should interact on the web, so that …
Cytotaxonomical remarks on Loncomelos visianicum (Hyacinthaceae), a poorly known species endemic to Croatia
2020
Loncomelos visianicum, a rare and poorly known geophyte of the Croatian flora, was described from the remote and uninhabited Adriatic island of Palagruza as Ornithogalum visianicum, and it has not been collected again for over a century. Basing on living materials, recently rediscovered in the locus classicus, it was possible to carry out a careful investigation regarding the morphology, karyology, leaf anatomy, and ecology of this very peculiar species. It is triploid, showing 2n = 42 + 0-5B chromosomes, taxonomically quite isolated, showing some morphological relationships with L. narbonense and L. creticum. Currently, L. visianicum is represented by a low number of individuals growing in…
Allium sphaeronixum (Amaryllidaceae), A New Species from Turkey
2023
In this paper, Allium sphaeronixum, a new species of the sect. Codonoprasum from Turkey, is described and illustrated. The new species is endemic to Central Anatolia, limited to the area of Nevşehir, where it grows on sandy or rocky soil at an elevation of 1000–1300 m a.s.l. Its morphology, phenology, karyology, leaf anatomy, seed testa micromorphology, chorology, and conservation status are examined in detail. The taxonomic relationships with the closest allied species, A. staticiforme and A. myrianthum, are also highlighted and discussed.

First report of Diplodia africana on Grevillea robusta
2020
Branch cankers and dieback were observed on silky-oak trees (Grevillea robusta) along some streets of Palermo (Sicily, Italy). Fungi isolated from symptomatic branches were identified as Diplodia africana and D. seriata by morphological characters and phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS and translation elongation factor 1-α sequences. Pathogenicity was verified by inoculating twigs of 3-y-old silky-oak plants. This is the first report of D. africana on G. robusta and the first record of D. seriata on this host in the northern hemisphere.
