Ambienti umidi effimeri e naturalità del paesaggio in Sicilia
2009
Typification of the name Erodium soluntinum Tod. (Geraniaceae) and its taxonomic implications
2017
The present contribution is part of the ongoing work promoted by the Italian Botanical Society aimed at recognizing and typifying all the taxa described from Italy and their loci classici, in order to increase their systematic knowledge and promote further studies (Domina et al. 2012, Peruzzi et al. 2015, Brundu et al. 2017). One of these taxa is Erodium soluntinum Todaro (1869: 36), a species belonging to Geraniaceae and considered an Italian endemic (Conti et al. 2005, Peruzzi et al. 2014, 2015). This name, as far as we are aware, is not yet typified.
Tradizioni etnofarmacobotaniche in alcune comunità rurali dei Monti di Trapani (Sicilia occidentale)
2014
Ethnopharmacobotanical traditions in some rural communities of Trapani Mountains (West-Sicily). – The results refer an ethnopharmacobotanical study carried out in the territories of Valderice, Busto Palizzolo, Custonaci and San Vito Lo Capo, in the Trapani Mountains. There are 155 plants used in etno-medicine. The etnofarmacobotanical use of spontaneous and cultivated taxa represents an ecosystem services provided by biodiversity in the traditional agricultural systems of this area.
Genetic and phytochemical difference between some Indian and Italian plants of Whitania somnifera (L.) Dunal
2007
The geographical distribution of Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal is quite wide. However, in Italy. this species is very rare and grows spontaneously only in Sicily and in Sardinia. The PCR-RAPD technique has been utilized in this work to determine the genetic relationship among Sicilian, Sardinian and Indian samples and the HPLC analysis of whitaferin A was used as a marker to evaluate the phytochemical differences. The genetic difference between Indian and Sicilian plants of W. somnifera turned out to be smaller than that between Indian and Sardinian plants of this species. The phytochemical analysis as well showed that the Sardinian specimen strongly differed from the Indian and Sicilian on…
Intervento di ripristino della copertura arborea su un'area del parco dell'Etna interessata da colata lavica recente.
1996
The planning and results of a reafforestation carried out on a private area occurring in the Etna Wildlife Reserve C zone are presented. The area consists of a terraced slope 70.000 square meters wide, made out of a lava flow part which dates back to 1983. At first were planted and seeded Astragalus siculus Biv. and Festuca circummediterranea Patzke, in order to set a pioneer vegetation cover; then were planted some aboreal species having a leading role in the physiognomical characterisation of the Etna landscape, like Betula aetnenis Raf., Pinus laricio Poiret, Populus tremula L. The success of the intervention is shown by the fairly quick penetration of 26 species coming from the neighbou…
Nuova stazione di Euphorbia serrata in Sicilia
2007
A new record of Euphorbia serrata (Euphorbiaceae) from Sicily. - Euphorbia serrata L. is reported from a new locality in Sicily near Mazara del Vallo (Trapani). Data on the biological cycle and the phytocoenosis in the new Sicilian locality are also reported.
The genus Isoëtes L. (Lycophyta, Isoëtaceae): Synthesis of karyological data
2001
Summary A synthesis of relevant karyological data regarding the genus Isoetes is given, with an up-to-date check list of chromosome numbers including 152 records referring to 67 taxa (62 species and 5 infraspecific taxa) and 16 hybrids. Total of different chromosome counts (considering two or more cytotypes for certain taxa, excluding hybrids) is 80. Probable base number is x = 11, even though x = 10 and x = 12 have been proposed for certain species. On the basis of data here summarized, the mean percentage of polyploidy is 61.2%; 31 taxa are diploids (38.8%), 28 are tetraploids (35.0%), 8 are hexaploids (10.0%), with a few species each which are tri-, penta-, octo-, deca- and dodeca-ploids…

ECOLOGICAL FEATURES OF MACROMYCETES IN EUCALYPTUS REFORESTATIONS IN SICILY (SOUTHERN ITALY)
2009
The objective of this work was to compare and estimate the ecological features of 192 macromycetes, including nine hypogeous and three semi-hypogeous fungi, collected in Sicilian areas reforested with Eucalyptus. The number of mycorrhizal fungi turned out to be only 22 % of the taxa recorded so far from other areas, and this underlines the difficulties of eucalyptus trees in adapting to the pedological and climatic conditions of Sicily.
PESI - a taxonomic backbone for Europe
2015
Reliable taxonomy underpins communication in all of biology, not least nature conservation and sustainable use of ecosystem resources. The flexibility of taxonomic interpretations, however, presents a serious challenge for end-users of taxonomic concepts. Users need standardised and continuously harmonised taxonomic reference systems, as well as highquality and complete taxonomic data sets, but these are generally lacking for nonspecialists. The solution is in dynamic, expertly curated web-based taxonomic tools. The Pan-European Species-directories Infrastructure (PESI) worked to solve this key issue by providing a taxonomic e-infrastructure for Europe. It strengthened the relevant social (…
