(2662) Proposal to reject the name Hypochaeris urens (Asteraceae)

2018

In order to avoid a disadvantageous nomenclatural change (Art. 56.1 of the ICN) entailed by the strict application of the rules, and to promote nomenclatural stability in the most parsimonious way, we here propose the rejection, under Art. 56, of the name Hypochaeris urens.

Ecological aspects of plants inhabiting Mediterranean cliffs. Challenges and prospects of life in vertical environments

2021

El primer capítulo, titulado "The complexity of environmental factors: cliff microclimate", investiga…

IDENTIFICATION AND SUSTAINABLE EXPLOITATION OF WILD EDIBLE MUSHROOMS IN RURAL AREAS (“MYCOTICON”, LDV-TOI PROJECT): DEVELOPMENT OF AN INNOVATIVE TRAI…

2013

In Mediterranean and in southeast Europe the activities of a significant part of the population are traditionally linked with agriculture, forestry and animal husbandry. However, many rural communities are experiencing serious difficulties associated with low income per person and poor employment prospects combined with increased demographic decline. Alternative activities such as the collection and trading of wild edible mushrooms as well as the cultivation of choice species could contribute at providing valuable solutions both in financial and environmental terms. The total number of fungal species which are considered having edible and/or medicinal value is over 2300 [1]. Most of them fo…

Headspace Volatile Composition of the Flowers of Caralluma europaea N.E.Br. (Apocynaceae)

2009

The volatile constituents of the flowers of Caralluma (Apteranthes) europaea (Guss.) N.E. Br. (Apocynaceae - Asclepiadoideae) from Lampedusa Island were analyzed by headspace method. The analyses allowed the identification and quantification of 41 compounds. The main components were, among the monoterpenoids, terpinolene (23.3%), a-terpinene (19.1%) and linalool (18.4%), whereas, among the carbonylic compounds the major constituents were heptanal (2.0%), octanoic acid (2.4%) and hexanoic acid (1.7%). It is worth to mention the presence of a nitrogen containing compound, indole (0.8%) and of a sulphur containing compound, dimethylsulphide (t). The compounds found in the flowers of C. europea…

What does happen when an insect pest follows its host plant and viceversa?

2015

Invasive species are usually well known but only make up a small percentage of the European’s alien plants and insects. The ways these exotic species interact with our natural and cultural heritage are very complex and even some species considered invasive had and could have positive aspects on some European landscape and culture. A close look at the complicated relationship between non-native and native plants and insects in the Mediterranean areas reveals some unexpected twists in the story. Here are some cases of when aliens can threaten our cultural heritage or being part of it

Invasive Aliens in Italy: Enumeration, History, Biology and Their Impact

2021

Italy includes two large islands, Sardinia and Sicily, and a peninsula separated from the European continent by the Alpine Arch. At national level ISPRA (Instituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale, Higher Institute for Environmental protection and research) is the instrument of the Ministry of Environment and for the Protection of the Territory and the Sea to carry out its mission, including the study, monitoring, and control of invasive alien species. Universities, Scientific Societies, and ONGs play a vital role in basic research. The interest in the study of alien plants is of a theoretical nature, as regards the migrations of living beings and interactions with native…
