An analysis of botanical studies of vascular plants from Italian wetlands

2022

Wetlands are essential for life on Earth, but at the same time the most threatened environments due to the gradual alterations associated with climate change and human action. The botanical studies on wetland higher plants carried out in Italy from 1950 until today are analysed in this survey. The 1,265 contributions resulting from this study are analysed from a historical, geographical, and content point of view. Most of the scientific contributions were published in the 1980s and 1990s, often by the same research groups and on a local scale. The predominant research theme is the inventory. Most papers are mainly focused on lakes and rivers. The results of this literature survey point to t…

A critical conspectus of Italian Lycopodiaceae

2015

As a result of our work on the Lycopodiaceae account for the Critical Flora of Italy, a new, synonymic inventory of Italian taxa is presented, based on herbarium studies and critical re-examination of extant literature. Three genera with eight species are accepted: Huperzia (1 species), Lycopodiella (1), and Lycopodium (6). An additional, ninth species (Lycopodiella cernua) is listed as a casual alien. The genus Diphasiastrum, accepted in several recent works, is treated at sectional level within Lycopodium (three species and their three hybrids). Lycopodium lagopus ( = L. clavatum subsp. monostachyon) is a recent addition to the Italian flora. Images of five types and Internet URI of other…

Conspectus of Italian Selaginella (Selaginellaceae), with some typifications

2015

An annotated synonymic inventory of Italian Selaginella taxa, a practical key for their identification and their dot distribution maps are presented, as a result of our work on the Selaginellaceae account for the Flora Critica d'Italia. The names Lycopodium helveticum L. and Selaginella denticulata var. platystachya Hieron. are typified.

Phytosociological notes on the Lygeum spartum grasslands from Crete.

2002

Lygeum spartum grasslands from Crete have been studied by the application of the phytosocological method. A new alliance, Scorzonero creticae-Lygeion sparti and three new associations and have been recognized. The first, Limonio hyssopifolii-Lygeetum sparti occurs on halomorphyc badlands in the Sitia territory (NE Crete); the second Erodio crassifolii-Lygeetum sparti grows on heavily eroded clayey outcrops close to Hyerapetra (SE Crete); the third Convolvulo oleifolii-Lygeetum sparti, substitutes the previous one some Km eastward from Hyerapetra, on stratified marls alternated to conglomerates. Within the last association, two subassociations have been recognized: limonietosum roridi (typic…

An outline of the Madonie Mountains (northern Sicily): a center of diversity for Pleurotus species

2013

The territory of the Madonie Mountains is considered as a biodiversity hot-spot in the Mediterranean Basin. Since long ago distinguished botanists who have studied the vegetation of this particular territory were fascinated by the high level of species diversity. In this chapter, an overview of the geographical, geological, soil, climatic and vegetation features of the area is provided. Madonie territory is an important center of diversity for fungi and in particular for species belonging to the genus Pleurotus growing on roots of plants of the family Apiaceae.

Iconografia della storia naturale delle Madonie

2011

A white Maitake (Grifola frondosa): nutritional value and antibacterial preliminary activity test

2017

Grifola frondosa (Dicks.) Gray (Meripilaceae) is a big size, perennial, infrequent lignicolous basidiomycetes, traditionally known as Maitake. Brown or grayish overlapped caps, with a wavy margin, characterize the sporophore. In the wild, it is usually found at the base of living oak trees but it is also cultivated. G. frondosa is mainly distributed in Japan, Asia, Eastern America, and Europe. In Italy, is infrequent but widely distributed in all regions. Field investigation carried out in autumn 2016 in Sicily (southern Italy) permitted to observe an unusual white G. frondosa growing at the base of a living tree of Quercus pubescens Willd. s.l. Once harvested, the mushroom sample was clean…
