Revision of the Eduardo Reyes Prósper’s herbarium and typification of three species of charophytes (<em>Charophyceae : Characeae</em>) pr…

2019

A study of the charophytes collected by Eduardo Reyes Prósper in the period 1904–1906 and kept in the herbarium of the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid (MA-ALGAE) is carried out. Reyes Prósper’s herbarium consists of 112 sheets, which had not been revised until now, among which are the type materials of Lamprothamnus aragonensis Reyes y Prosper, Lamprothamnus toletanus Reyes y Prosper and Tolypella giennensis Reyes y Prosper, of which their lectotypes are here designated.

PROTECTING BIODIVERSITY ON PRIVATE PROPERTY: AN EXPERIENCE IN CORLEONE (SICILY)

2017

Bona Furtuna is an organic farm located 8 km far from Corleone closed to Campofiorito (Palermo). The study area includes the slopes of Castro, Giardinello and Valle Fredda which goes up to Barraù Mt. included in the Special Areas of Conservation (ITA020037) according to the Natura 2000 European Birds and Habitat Directives. The high level of biodiversity is supported by over 502 taxa of vascular flora, 38 of which are endemic to Sicily. The study area is quite diversified from a bioclimatic point of view as well, presenting different gradients from the Lower Mesomediterranean (Upper dry) and the Lower Supramediterranean (Lower subhumid). The landscape has been shaped by frequent changes in …

Zemes mākslīgo pavadoņu novērošanas stacijas dežūru žurnāls Nr. 1, 1957–1958

2023

Raksts tapis par PSRS izgudrotu Zemes mākslīgo pavadoņu novērošanas stacijas dežūru žurnālu, kur uzskaitītas iesaistītās personas - pasniedzēji, zinātniskie asistenti un studenti no Pētera Stučkas Latvijas Valsts universitātes (LVU) Fizikas un matemātikas fakultātes. Novērošanas stacija atradās LVU Botāniskajā dārzā, kur bija iespējams veikt astronomiskos novērojumus. Lai kādas bija ieceres novērošanas stacijas attīstībai, studentu interese noplaka interešu trūkuma dēļ. Zemes mākslīgo pavadoņu novērošanas stacijas dežūru žurnāls Nr. 1, 1957–1958 pievienots atsevišķā datnē.

Phytophthora Diversity in a Sentinel Arboretum and in a Nature Reserve Area

2020

Most soilborne Phytophthora species are invasive plant pathogens and nursery plants for transplanting are considered a primary pathway for the introduction of exotic Phytophthora species into plant diversity conservation areas and sites. As a preliminary step toward investigating this subject, we compared the diversity of Phytophthora in the protected natural area Complesso Speleologico Villasmundo S. Alfio Nature Reserve (NR) (Melilli, Siracusa) and the botanical garden (BG) of the University of Catania (Catania), in eastern Sicily (southern Italy). Sampling was carried out during the spring of 2019. Overall 29 rhizosphere soil samples were collected, 17 from different types of vegetation …

Contributi alla interpretazione, conservazione e restauro dei manufatti storico-artistici dell’Orto Botanico di Palermo: il Paride di Nunzio Morello

2017

Contributions to the interpretation, conservation and restoration of the historical and artistic artifacts of the Botanical Garden of Palermo: the Paride by Nunzio Morello – Purely cognitive and conservative requirements of the historical-artistic heritage of the Botanical Garden of the University of Palermo, have led the authors to present one of the most representative monuments of such Garden that is of great artistic and cultural value in the City of Palermo: the Paride Pensante, a marble sculpture made in 1839 by the Palermo sculptor Nunzio Morello - a pupil of the most famous artist Valerio Villareale - donated to his homeland and placed in the men- tioned Botanical Garden, in the squ…

Molecular characterization of cucumber mosaic virus isolates infecting ornamental species cultivated in the botanical garden of Bologna university.

2006

During an epidemiological survey carried out in the Botanical Garden at Bologna University, Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) has been detected by applying PAS-ELISA technique infecting some ornamental species exhibiting a severe symptomatology on the leaves. Datura innoxia Miller. showed mosaic and leaf-curling; Globularia nudicaulis L. produced narrowed leaves with a yellow mosaic and/or variegation; Eupatorium cannabinum L. showed a systemic chlorotic and/or yellow mosaic and stunting. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) were employed to characterise these CMV isolates. Total RNA was extracted from symptomatic leaf samples…

Gardens on Canvas and Paper: Cataloguing Botanical Abundance in Late Medici Tuscany

2016

What is the purpose of portraying a branch from a pear tree in bloom and fruit, of listing hundreds of citrus varieties or of dissecting a huge truffle? When Cosimo III (1642–1723), the penultimate grand duke of the Medici dynasty, commissioned artists and botanists alike to create comprehensive visual and textual catalogues of Tuscan flora, aesthetics and curiosity seemed to go hand in hand with a demonstration of knowledge and prosperity. This article deals with the collection of botanical paintings by Bartolomeo Bimbi (1648–1730), housed in the Casino della Topaia close to the city of Florence, and with the mainly handwritten work of the grand ducal botanist Pier Antonio Micheli (1679–17…

Impact of 70 years urban growth associated with heavy metal pollution

2014

Historical trends in trace element deposition were analyzed using herbaria specimens. We determined Al, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ca, Na, P, K, S, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn contents in leaves of eight specimens collected in 1941. To assess changes, we collected the same plants from a botanical garden in 2012. The concentrations of major elements showed large species variability. However, temporal trends were predominately detected for heavy metals. The Cd, Ni and Cr contents in the 2012 leaves were 10, 13 and 16 times higher, respectively, than in 1941. Urban activities have substantially raised the levels of these metals in urban atmospheres due to changes in human activities over 70 years of urban …
