Parameterisation of bivalve functional traits for mechanistic eco-physiological dynamic energy budget (DEB) models

2013

Mechanistic models such as those based on dynamic energy budget (DEB) theory are emergent ecomechanics tools to investigate the extent of fitness in organisms through changes in life history traits as explained by bioenergetic principles. The rapid growth in interest around this approach originates from the mechanistic characteristics of DEB, which are based on a number of rules dictating the use of mass and energy flow through organisms. One apparent bottleneck in DEB applications comes from the estimations of DEB parameters which are based on mathematical and statistical methods (covariation method). The parameterisation process begins with the knowledge of some functional traits of a tar…

An Embedded Processor for Metabolic Networks Optimization

2011

In recent years biological processes modelling and simulation have become two key issues in analyzing complex cellular systems. The computational requirements suggest to investigate alternative solutions to the common supercomputers and clusters in order to optimize and overcome computational bottleneck. The goal of this work is the design and the realization of an embedded processor for metabolic networks optimization in order to examine their behaviour and robustness under malfunctions of one or more nodes. The embedded processor has been prototyped on the Celoxica RC203E board, equipped with programmable FPGA technologies. A case studied outlining the E. Coli bacteria metabolic network i…

A parallel and sensitive software tool for methylation analysis on multicore platforms.

2015

Abstract Motivation: DNA methylation analysis suffers from very long processing time, as the advent of Next-Generation Sequencers has shifted the bottleneck of genomic studies from the sequencers that obtain the DNA samples to the software that performs the analysis of these samples. The existing software for methylation analysis does not seem to scale efficiently neither with the size of the dataset nor with the length of the reads to be analyzed. As it is expected that the sequencers will provide longer and longer reads in the near future, efficient and scalable methylation software should be developed. Results: We present a new software tool, called HPG-Methyl, which efficiently maps bis…

TWO-LANE TRAFFIC WITH PLACES OF OBSTRUCTION TO TRAFFIC

2004

As the Nagel–Schreckenberg model (NaSch model) became known as a realistic approach to describe traffic flow on single-lane streets, this model was extended to two-lane traffic by several groups. On the base of our two-lane model, we will now investigate the impact of a place of obstruction, e.g., because of road works, on partial fractions, densities and mean velocities.

Identifying legitimate Web users and bots with different traffic profiles — an Information Bottleneck approach

2020

Abstract Recent studies reported that about half of Web users nowadays are intelligent agents (Web bots). Many bots are impersonators operating at a very high sophistication level, trying to emulate navigational behaviors of legitimate users (humans). Moreover, bot technology continues to evolve which makes bot detection even harder. To deal with this problem, many advanced methods for differentiating bots from humans have been proposed, a large part of which relies on supervised machine learning techniques. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to identify various profiles of bots and humans which combines feature selection and unsupervised learning of HTTP-level traffic patterns to d…

Efficient Model Repository for Web Applications

2018

Many model-based applications have been developed with standalone usage in mind. When migrating such applications to the web, we have to think about multiple users competing for limited server resources. In addition, we encounter the need to synchronize models via the network for client-side access. Thus, there is the risk that the model storage could become a bottleneck.

Temporal-range estimation of multiple objects: evidence for an early bottleneck.

2011

When making parallel time-to-contact (TTC) estimates of two approaching objects, the two respective TTC estimates interfere with one another in an asymmetric fashion. The TTC of the later-arriving object is systematically overestimated, while the estimated TTC for the first-arriving object is as accurate as in a condition presenting only a single object. This asymmetric interference points to a processing bottleneck that could be due to early (e.g., during the estimation of the TTC from the optic flow) or late (e.g., during the timing of the response or the motor execution) constraints in the TTC estimation process. We used a Sperling-like prediction-motion task to differentiate between the…

The effect of periodic bottlenecks on the competitive ability of Drosophila pseudoobscura lines.

1993

Competition experiments between several Drosophila pseudoobscura strains that were previously subjected to periodic bottlenecks of different sizes and D. willistoni have been carried out. Contrary to previous results with these two species, where stable coexistence was detected, populations of D. pseudoobscura displaced D. willistoni in a few generations. By using a relative fitness measure, the control lines (that had not gone through bottlenecks) outcompeted D. willistoni faster than bottlenecked lines. One of these, corresponding to the minimum possible bottleneck size of one pair, also shows significantly lower relative fitness than the other strains. These results are discussed in rela…

Precise and efficient parametric path analysis

2012

Hard real-time systems require tasks to finish in time. To guarantee the timeliness of such a system, static timing analyses derive upper bounds on the worst-case execution time (WCET) of tasks. There are two types of timing analyses: numeric and parametric. A numeric analysis derives a numeric timing bound and, to this end, assumes all information such as loop bounds to be given a priori. If these bounds are unknown during analysis time, a parametric analysis can compute a timing formula parametric in these variables. A performance bottleneck of timing analyses, numeric and especially parametric, is the so-called path analysis, which determines the path in the analyzed task with the longes…

Lignin recovery from spent alkaline pulping liquors using acidification, membrane separation, and related processing steps: A Review

2019

The separation of lignin from the black liquor generated during alkaline pulping is reviewed in this article with an emphasis on chemistry. Based on published accounts, the precipitation of lignin from spent pulping liquor by addition of acids can be understood based on dissociation equilibria of weak acid groups, which affects the solubility behavior of lignin-related chemical species. Solubility issues also govern lignin separation technologies based on ultrafiltration membranes; reduction in membrane permeability is often affected by conditions leading to decreased solubility of lignin decomposition products and the presence of colloidal matter. Advances in understanding of such phenomen…
