Ordering of two-dimensional crystals confined in strips of finite width.

2007

Monte Carlo simulations are used to study the effect of confinement on a crystal of point particles interacting with an inverse power law potential $\ensuremath{\propto}{r}^{\ensuremath{-}12}$ in $d=2$ dimensions. This system can describe colloidal particles at the air-water interface, a model system for experimental study of two-dimensional melting. It is shown that the state of the system (a strip of width $D$) depends very sensitively on the precise boundary conditions at the two ``walls'' providing the confinement. If one uses a corrugated boundary commensurate with the order of the bulk triangular crystalline structure, both orientational order and positional order is enhanced, and suc…

A Shoreline model for breaking waves

2011

In order to simulate the wave motion and, in turn, the flow, within the nearshore region, in the last decades the derivation and the application of depth-integrated type of models have been widely investigated and developed. However, in such models, the problems of facing wave breaking and the moving shoreline are not trivial and therefore several approaches have been proposed. About wave breaking, approaches both based on the adoption of an artificial eddy viscosity Zelt (1991) and on the concept of roller Veeramony (2000), Karambas (2003), Musumeci (2005) have been implemented. As regards the shoreline boundary condition, a couple of numerical techniques have been mainly adopted, namely t…

A beam finite element for magneto-electro-elastic multilayered composite structures

2012

Abstract A new finite element based upon an elastic equivalent single-layer model for shear deformable and straight magneto-electro-elastic generally laminated beam is presented. The element has six degrees of freedom represented by the displacement components and the cross-section rotation of its two nodes. The magneto-electric boundary conditions enter the discrete problem as work-equivalent forces and moments while the electro-magnetic state characterization constitutes a post-processing step. The element possesses the superconvergence property for the static problem of beams with uniform cross-section and homogenous material properties along the beam axis direction. Moreover, it is free…

Zero viscosity limit of the Oseen equations in a channel

2001

Oseen equations in the channel are considered. We give an explicit solution formula in terms of the inverse heat operators and of projection operators. This solution formula is used for the analysis of the behavior of the Oseen equations in the zero viscosity limit. We prove that the solution of Oseen equations converges in W1,2 to the solution of the linearized Euler equations outside the boundary layer and to the solution of the linearized Prandtl equations inside the boundary layer. © 2001 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

Primary and secondary distributions after a small-amplitude potential step at disk electrode coated with conducting film

2011

Abstract The set of equations and boundary conditions for the “primary potential/current distribution” after a small-amplitude potential step has been analyzed for a film-coated disk electrode in contact with an electrolyte. The solution of these equations provides the overall short-time resistance of this system, Rtot, which is determined by the short-time resistance of the electrolyte solution in contact with the bare disk electrode, Rs, and the short-time film resistance to the current passage in the normal direction, R f = L f / κ f π r o 2 (ro, disk radius; Lf, film thickness; κf, its specific conductivity). The deviation of Rtot from the sum of these resistances, Rs + Rf, originates f…

A mathematical model of mass transfer in spherical geometry: plum (Prunus domestica) drying

2003

In this paper the analytical solution of a mathematical model of mass transfer in spherical geometry is presented for boundary conditions useful for simulating drying processes of fruit with near spherical stones. This model is applied to analyse the efficiency of a new pre-treatment for a prune drying processes. The new proposed physical abrasion pre-treatment increases the plum drying rate at 60 degreesC. The mathematical model here presented allows a complete comparison of the experimental results obtained with this pre-treatment and with traditional ones. In particular the greater efficiency of the new physical pre-treatment appears to be due to the enhancement of the water diffusivity …

Solving some optimal control problems using the barrier penalty function method

2005

In this paper we present a new approach to solve the two-level optimization problem arising from an approximation by means of the finite element method of optimal control problems governed by unilateral boundary value problems. The minimized functional depends on control variables and state variables x. The latter are the optimal solution of an auxiliary quadratic programming problem, whose parameters depend on u.

Partition function of the trigonometric SOS model with reflecting end

2010

We compute the partition function of the trigonometric SOS model with one reflecting end and domain wall type boundary conditions. We show that in this case, instead of a sum of determinants obtained by Rosengren for the SOS model on a square lattice without reflection, the partition function can be represented as a single Izergin determinant. This result is crucial for the study of the Bethe vectors of the spin chains with non-diagonal boundary terms.

Distribution of oxygen partial pressure in a two-dimensional tissue supplied by capillary meshes and concurrent and countercurrent systems

1969

Abstract For the calculations of oxygen partial pressure in a two-dimensional tissue model supplied by a capillary network (inhomogeneously perfused tissue), two differential equations are given that describe the process in the tissue and capillaries. The differential equations are coupled by the boundary conditions. Results obtained by using the method of successive displacements are given for the two-dimensional problem. This method exhibits a satisfactory convergence. The accuracy of the results is about ±5% based on the initial concentration. The results for the network model are compared with those for equivalent concurrent and countercurrent systems. Equivalence means in this connecti…

Quantitative analysis of numerical estimates for the permeability of porous media from lattice-Boltzmann simulations

2010

During the last decade, lattice-Boltzmann (LB) simulations have been improved to become an efficient tool for determining the permeability of porous media samples. However, well known improvements of the original algorithm are often not implemented. These include for example multirelaxation time schemes or improved boundary conditions, as well as different possibilities to impose a pressure gradient. This paper shows that a significant difference of the calculated permeabilities can be found unless one uses a carefully selected setup. We present a detailed discussion of possible simulation setups and quantitative studies of the influence of simulation parameters. We illustrate our results b…
