Balls into non-uniform bins

2014

Balls-into-bins games for uniform bins are widely used to model randomized load balancing strategies. Recently, balls-into-bins games have been analysed under the assumption that the selection probabilities for bins are not uniformly distributed. These new models are motivated by properties of many peer-to-peer (P2P) networks, which are not able to perfectly balance the load over the bins. While previous evaluations try to find strategies for uniform bins under non-uniform bin selection probabilities, this paper investigates heterogeneous bins, where the "capacities" of the bins might differ significantly. We show that heterogeneous environments can even help to distribute the load more eve…

Restricted Uniform Boundedness in Banach Spaces

2009

Precise conditions for a subset A of a Banach space X are known in order that pointwise bounded on A sequences of bounded linear functionals on X are uniformly bounded. In this paper, we study such conditions under the extra assumption that the functionals belong to a given linear subspace &#915 of X *. When &#915 = X *, these conditions are known to be the same ones assuring a bounded linear operator into X , having A in its image, to be onto. We prove that, for A , deciding uniform boundedness of sequences in &#915 is the same property as deciding surjectivity for certain classes of operators. On generalized a-Browder's theorem

2007

We characterize the bounded linear operators T satisfying generalized a-Browder's theorem, or generalized a-Weyl's theorem, by means of localized SVEP, as well as by means of the quasi-nilpotent part H0(I T) asbelongs to certain sets of C. In the last part we give a general framework in which generalized a-Weyl's theorem follows for several classes of operators. 1. Preliminaries. Let L(X) denote the space of bounded linear oper- ators on an infinite-dimensional complex Banach space X. For T ∈ L(X), denote by α(T) the dimension of the kernel ker T, and by β(T) the codi- mension of the range T(X). The operator T ∈ L(X) is called upper semi- Fredholm if α(T) < ∞ and T(X) is closed, and lower …

Entire Functions of Bounded Type on Fréchet Spaces

1993

We show that holomorphic mappings of bounded type defined on Frechet spaces extend to the bidual. The relationship between holomorphic mappings of bounded type and of uniformly bounded type is discussed and some algebraic and topological properties of the space of all entire mappings of (uniformly) bounded type are proved, for example a holomorphic version of Schauder's theorem.

Fixed point properties and proximinality in Banach spaces

2009

Abstract In this paper we prove the existence of a fixed point for several classes of mappings (mappings admitting a center, nonexpansive mappings, asymptotically nonexpansive mappings) defined on the closed convex subsets of a Banach space satisfying some proximinality conditions. In particular, we derive a sufficient condition, more general than weak star compactness, such that if C is a bounded closed convex subset of l 1 satisfying this condition, then every nonexpansive mapping T : C → C has a fixed point.

Unbounded C*-seminorms and biweights on partial *-algebras

2005

Unbounded C*-seminorms generated by families of biweights on a partial *-algebra are considered and the admissibility of biweights is characterized in terms of unbounded C*-seminorms they generate. Furthermore, it is shown that, under suitable assumptions, when the family of biweights consists of all those ones which are relatively bounded with respect to a given C*-seminorm q, it can be obtained an expression for q analogous to that one which holds true for the norm of a C*-algebra.

A multilinear Lindenstrauss theorem

2006

Abstract We show that the set of N -linear mappings on a product of N Banach spaces such that all their Arens extensions attain their norms (at the same element) is norm dense in the space of all bounded N -linear mappings.

On the solutions to 1-Laplacian equation with L1 data

2009

AbstractIn the present paper we study the behaviour, as p goes to 1, of the renormalized solutions to the problems(0.1){−div(|∇up|p−2∇up)=finΩ,up=0on∂Ω, where p>1, Ω is a bounded open set of RN (N⩾2) with Lipschitz boundary and f belongs to L1(Ω). We prove that these renormalized solutions pointwise converge, up to “subsequences,” to a function u. With a suitable definition of solution we also prove that u is a solution to a “limit problem.” Moreover we analyze the situation occurring when more regular data f are considered.

Polynomial codimension growth and the Specht problem

2017

Abstract We construct a continuous family of algebras over a field of characteristic zero with slow codimension growth bounded by a polynomial of degree 4. This is achieved by building, for any real number α ∈ ( 0 , 1 ) a commutative nonassociative algebra A α whose codimension sequence c n ( A α ) , n = 1 , 2 , …  , is polynomially bounded and lim ⁡ log n ⁡ c n ( A α ) = 3 + α . As an application we are able to construct a new example of a variety with an infinite basis of identities.

Polynomial identities on superalgebras: Classifying linear growth

2006

Abstract We classify, up to PI-equivalence, the superalgebras over a field of characteristic zero whose sequence of codimensions is linearly bounded. As a consequence we determine the linear functions describing the graded codimensions of a superalgebra.
