Oscillatory Localization of Quantum Walks Analyzed by Classical Electric Circuits

We examine an unexplored quantum phenomenon we call oscillatory localization, where a discrete-time quantum walk with Grover's diffusion coin jumps back and forth between two vertices. We then connect it to the power dissipation of a related electric network. Namely, we show that there are only two kinds of oscillating states, called uniform states and flip states, and that the projection of an arbitrary state onto a flip state is bounded by the power dissipation of an electric circuit. By applying this framework to states along a single edge of a graph, we show that low effective resistance implies oscillatory localization of the quantum walk. Ultrarelativistic (Cauchy) spectral problem in the infinite well

We analyze spectral properties of the ultrarelativistic (Cauchy) operator $|\Delta |^{1/2}$, provided its action is constrained exclusively to the interior of the interval $[-1,1] \subset R$. To this end both analytic and numerical methods are employed. New high-accuracy spectral data are obtained. A direct analytic proof is given that trigonometric functions $\cos(n\pi x/2)$ and $\sin(n\pi x)$, for integer $n$ are {\it not} the eigenfunctions of $|\Delta |_D^{1/2}$, $D=(-1,1)$. This clearly demonstrates that the traditional Fourier multiplier representation of $|\Delta |^{1/2}$ becomes defective, while passing from $R$ to a bounded spatial domain $D\subset R$.

Coordinate representation for non Hermitian position and momentum operators

In this paper we undertake an analysis of the eigenstates of two non self-adjoint operators $\hat q$ and $\hat p$ similar, in a suitable sense, to the self-adjoint position and momentum operators $\hat q_0$ and $\hat p_0$ usually adopted in ordinary quantum mechanics. In particular we discuss conditions for these eigenstates to be {\em biorthogonal distributions}, and we discuss few of their properties. We illustrate our results with two examples, one in which the similarity map between the self-adjoint and the non self-adjoint is bounded, with bounded inverse, and the other in which this is not true. Killing (absorption) versus survival in random motion

We address diffusion processes in a bounded domain, while focusing on somewhat unexplored affinities between the presence of absorbing and/or inaccessible boundaries. For the Brownian motion (L\'{e}vy-stable cases are briefly mentioned) model-independent features are established, of the dynamical law that underlies the short time behavior of these random paths, whose overall life-time is predefined to be long. As a by-product, the limiting regime of a permanent trapping in a domain is obtained. Intraenvironmental correlations in the ground state of a nonisolated two-state particle

The existence of entanglement in the ground state of a two-level particle coupled to a bosonic environment is proved. The quantum covariances of pairs of simple dynamical variables relative to different subsystems are explicitly shown to be bounded. Physically interpretable conditions for the occurrence of weak intraenvironmental correlations are reported and discussed. The potentialities of our treatment are briefly put into evidence.

Pattern selection in the 2D FitzHugh–Nagumo model

We construct square and target patterns solutions of the FitzHugh–Nagumo reaction–diffusion system on planar bounded domains. We study the existence and stability of stationary square and super-square patterns by performing a close to equilibrium asymptotic weakly nonlinear expansion: the emergence of these patterns is shown to occur when the bifurcation takes place through a multiplicity-two eigenvalue without resonance. The system is also shown to support the formation of axisymmetric target patterns whose amplitude equation is derived close to the bifurcation threshold. We present several numerical simulations validating the theoretical results.

Longterm damped dynamics of the extensible suspension bridge

This work is focused on the doubly nonlinear equation, whose solutions represent the bending motion of an extensible, elastic bridge suspended by continuously distributed cables which are flexible and elastic with stiffness k^2. When the ends are pinned, long-term dynamics is scrutinized for arbitrary values of axial load p and stiffness k^2. For a general external source f, we prove the existence of bounded absorbing sets.When f is timeindependent, the related semigroup of solutions is shown to possess the global attractor of optimal regularity and its characterization is given in terms of the steady states of the problem.

Theoretical Studies of the Propagation of Sound in Channels Filled with Helium II

The two-fluid nature of liquid helium II leads to the possibility of several types of wave motion, e.g., first sound, second sound, fourth sound, and the fifth wave mode. First and second sound appear in the bulk liquid. The characters of these wave modes alter materially if helium is bounded by solid walls, e.g., between two plane-parallel plates forming a channel. This paper reports upon the calculation of the properties of wave modes which can exist in such channels.

Topologies on Partial O*-Algebras

In this chapter, we introduce some basic locally convex topologies on partial O*-algebras and we establish general properties of these topologies. In Section 4.1, we compare the graph topologies induced by different O-families on the same domain (and the corresponding families of bounded subsets). In the case where the domain D M of an O-family M is a (quasi-) Frechet space, the structure of bounded subsets in D M can be described in a rather explicit way.
