Summary Network arches have a tensile and a compressive flange with a web consisting of crossing hangers. Some of the hangers cross each other twice. The network can be seen as a very light, simply supported beam. There is little bending. There is a lot of tension in tie and hangers. The arches are well supported by hangers and wind bracing. Thus the buckling strength of the arch is high as long as few hangers relax. That is easiest to prevent when a concrete tie gives extra weight in the tie. Abstract The dynamic response of friction damped bracing systems and ordinary cross-bracing systems inserted into surrounding frames without lateral stiffness is analysed in order to compare the typical behaviour of the two different bracing systems. Optimal design of elastic plastic frames accounting for seismic protection devices

The optimal design of elastic perfectly plastic steel frames with or without suitable protection devices and subjected to static as well as seismic loadings is studied. Two minimum volume problem formulations are proposed, on the grounds of the so-called statical approach, accounting for three different resistance limits: the purely elastic limit, the (elastic) shakedown limit and the instantaneous collapse limit.
