Limonium albuferae (Plumbaginaceae), a new polyploid species from the Eastern Iberian Peninsula

A new species from Limonium (Plumbaginaceae), L. albuferae sp. nov., is described from the saline-sandy soils in the saltmarshes of the Eastern Iberian Peninsula (Devesa Albufera, Valencia province, Spain). The new species is triploid (2n = 26) and is closely related to the Western Mediterranean L. girardianum from which it morphologically differs by the major robustness, and overall dimensions of leaves, inflorescences, spikes and spikelets, and by the comparative smaller size of the outer and middle bracts.

Cladosins L-O, new hybrid polyketides from the endophytic fungus Cladosporium sphaerospermum WBS017

Abstract The endophytic fungus Cladosporium sphaerospermum WBS017 was obtained from healthy bulbs of Fritillaria unibracteata var. wabuensis. Fermentation of C. sphaerospermum on solid rice medium yielded three new hybrid polyketides, cladosins L−N (1–3), and a known derivative cladodionen (4). Further cultivation of this fungus on white bean medium afforded an additional new hybrid polyketide, cladosin O (5) along with three known analogues (6–8). The structures of the new compounds were elucidated using a combination of NMR and HRESIMS data. Helianthemum scopulicolum (Cistaceae), a new species from Majorca (Balearic Islands, Spain)

Rupicolous plants coming from a single Balearic locality are described as a new species, Helianthemum scopulicolum. The plant is diploid (2n=20) and belongs to Helianthemum subgenus Helianthemum sect. Helianthemum. On morphological grounds, Helianthemum scopulicolum is related to some members of the H. apenninum aggregate, notably H. apenninum s.l., H. asperum and H. violaceum. However, the new species can be distinguished on the basis of leaves green, shining, glabrescent on the adaxial surface, deciduous short bracts, glabrescent inner sepals lacking long setae and pink-purple flowers.

Summary Some annual species of the Rubiaceae native in Anatolia are specialized in their methods of seed dispersal. Contrary to other members of the genus, the frucitficence of Cruriata articulata with its persisting bracts falls to pieces which act as ‘surface:rollers’ transported by the wind. Valantia hispida and Callipeltis cucullaria are heterodissmeniate. Some of the mericarps arc dispersed by different agents, the other ones stay attached to the plant, showing a form of atelechory, a common phenomenon in arid regions. Other aberrant forms of dissemination are studied.

Limonium cedrorumsp. nov. (Plumbaginaceae) from Lebanon

Limonium cedrorum Domina & Ramondo, a new species belonging to the L. palmare aggr., is described and illustrated from the inland near Becharre (Lebanon). Its relationships with morphologically close taxa are discussed. Limonium cedrorum differs from L. sieberi and L. postii mainly by looser inflorescences and larger flowers. It differs from L. galilaeum by longer outer bract and longer scale below the first inflorescence branch, few sterile branches, thicker base of the inflorescence and denser spikes, and from L. graecum by the shape of the infl orescence, longer basal internodes and the shape of the calyx.

Phylogeny of Salicornioideae (Chenopodiaceae): Diversification, biogeography, and evolutionary trends in leaf and flower morphology

Chenopodiaceae-Salicomioideae (14-16 gen./c. 90 spp.) are distributed worldwide in coastal and inland saline habitats. Most of them are easy to recognize by their succulent-articulated stem with strongly reduced leaves and by flowers aggregated in dense, thick spike-shaped thyrses. ITS and the atpB-rbcL spacer were sequenced for 67 species representing 14 genera of Salicomioideae and analysed with maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood, a fossil-calibrated molecular clock using the penalized likelihood method, and lineage through time plots.
